5 out of 5 eggsExcellent!

This review is from: ASUS USB-AC56 Dual-band Wireless-AC1200 USB 3.0 Wi-Fi Adapter Up to 400+867Mbps Wireless Data Rates WPA2

Pros: Even in this concrete & rebar house I can get 390Mbs throughput no problem while being 1 floor down. Go 2 floors down and still a rock solid signal @ 240Mbps. I can't praise this thing enough.

Cons: None!

Other Thoughts: I can't really knock it for anything. It does exactly what I need it to do, the software is great and not intrusive. When at home I like the separate cable/stand. The caps for protecting it while traveling is great.

Only suggestion I would have is to be able to stick those caps on the base. It would give it just a bit more stability as well as a place to keep them when not in use.

4 out of 5 eggsslight above review standard.

This review is from: ASUS USB-AC56 Dual-band Wireless-AC1200 USB 3.0 Wi-Fi Adapter Up to 400+867Mbps Wireless Data Rates WPA2

Pros: Fast connection, Dual band, Easy set up, Intuitive hardware, good stand and covers for when needing to move or on the go.

Cons: slightly bulky or out of the way, User interface can be sluggish at times.

Other Thoughts: All in all I will say this earned the 4/5 star easily and if not for some hick ups and the fact it can be a little cumbersome on certain laptops if you are taking it on the go, this would be a 5/5. its fast, set up is basically instant, and the connection with 5ghz, well lets just say you won't want to ever be on a device without one of these.... I am considering a second one to shut up my girlfriend about how much better my PC works.
I will say on a sad note: there are apparently a lot of people who use windows and review this product and make one worry on set up... go ahead and ignore them... Windows recognizes it as a second wifi card basically and you don't HAVE to use the included software from ASUS at least on my windows 7 pc. if you have problems setting it up, I am sorry but I am confident it was not a hardware, nor software issue by ASUS.
Side note: not a great computer I am on either so its not that, its just a gateway NV75S with upgraded ram is the only change I have made internally.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome - Pure awesome

This review is from: ASUS USB-AC56 Dual-band Wireless-AC1200 USB 3.0 Wi-Fi Adapter Up to 400+867Mbps Wireless Data Rates WPA2

Pros: I'm getting the same download and upload speeds I used to get when my computer was hardwired to the internet. My router signal has to travel roughly 35 feet and through 2 walls. Set up was easy, and unlike TP-LINK's utility the ASUS one does not interfere with the Windows 7 utility.

Cons: None so far. Will update if something happens.

Other Thoughts: I see a lot of people complaining that seem to have Windows 8. I game on my PC so I don't use it, so I cannot comment there.

1 out of 5 eggsInstallation is a nightmare

This review is from: ASUS USB-AC56 Dual-band Wireless-AC1200 USB 3.0 Wi-Fi Adapter Up to 400+867Mbps Wireless Data Rates WPA2

Pros: None. Can not get it installed

Cons: Many. Can not get it installed.

Other Thoughts: Windows 7, 64 bit. The CD Rom that came with the device would not load and run. Had to go through Explorer to find and open setup application. Driver and Utility appeared to install properly. System rebooted. Blue LED on front of adapter is lit. But Adapter does nothing. Will not work. Also, utility will not run. Gives me message that I must first connect adapter to my computer. Well, it is connected. Checked Control Panel:System:Device Manager ... Adapter shows properly installed with all drivers working. Ran massively long CAT 5 cable to connect computer to hardwire network. Allowed windows to do search for updated driver for this adapter. Search came back that best driver was already installed. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling driver. Tried downloading and installing driver and utility from ASUS site. NOTHING I TRY WILL WORK. This Adapter simply will not install, will not work. The utility will not run. That's 6 hours of my life ... WASTED. I will not recommend this product to any friends or family. But, if you are a terrible person, unkind to your fellow man .... by all means ... buy this. Buy a dozen. Give them as gifts. Me? This is the very last ASUS product I will ever buy.

1 out of 5 eggsFAIL with new computer

This review is from: ASUS USB-AC56 Dual-band Wireless-AC1200 USB 3.0 Wi-Fi Adapter Up to 400+867Mbps Wireless Data Rates WPA2

Pros: Great when it works.

Cons: KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED critical Windows 8.1 error

Other Thoughts: This adapter worked really well with a Windows 8.1 on deceased Dell XPS computer. Replaced with a new Lenovo K450e PC, and driver gets a fatal kernel exception when the PC goes to sleep (KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED). Also when I disable the adapter, get this exception. It is great while it's working, but the constant blue screen dumps when I'm away from my computer for a while are not acceptable to me. Had to stop using it, too bad, just wasted money at this point.

On the other hand, did give me a chance to use the Windows debug SDK to look at the minidumps that I was getting. Very educational *smile*.

1 out of 5 eggsBuyer Beware

This review is from: ASUS USB-AC56 Dual-band Wireless-AC1200 USB 3.0 Wi-Fi Adapter Up to 400+867Mbps Wireless Data Rates WPA2

Pros: Works as advertised, when it works. The first one I bought only lasted 2 weeks and was replaced by Newegg. That replacement lasted 2 months. I am returning the 2nd one now and who knows how long that will last? My experience tells me, this is a defective product, because I have never had any electronic component replaced 2 times in such a short period of time, that was not a defective product in my life!!! I also bought the ASUS AC68 wireless router which has also been repaired already within the same timeframe. These are the first ASUS products that I have bought and there is clearly a reliability issue with them. What happens when the warranty period is over?

Cons: The system works fine, the product works fine (when it works), but if reliability is a major issue, I can not recommend this product.

2 out of 5 eggsCan't change MAC address

This review is from: ASUS USB-AC56 Dual-band Wireless-AC1200 USB 3.0 Wi-Fi Adapter Up to 400+867Mbps Wireless Data Rates WPA2

Pros: Good speed

Cons: I have so far not been able to get this adapter to work with Linux (Ubuntu 10.04; PCLOS 2014)
I was very disappointed to discover that the MAC address can not be changed with the WinXP drivers. This causes big problems on my home network, especially is I move the adapter from one PC to another.
I also have the problem of intermittently dropping connections.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent Hardware

This review is from: ASUS USB-AC56 Dual-band Wireless-AC1200 USB 3.0 Wi-Fi Adapter Up to 400+867Mbps Wireless Data Rates WPA2

Pros: Brought this as a switch over since my older Realtek adapter didn't have the proper drivers for Windows 8. Setup is incredibly easy, speed is blistering compared to my older adapters, and incredible range as well.

Cons: The ASUS software utility gave me issues after about three days. The Internet will randomly give out, the network will disconnect itself, and it would sometimes even forget my wireless passwords.

Other Thoughts: Overall, great little adapter. USB 3.0 speed, very good range. Expect a bit of a hassle with the utility software (flashing up on screen, wireless passwords being forgotten upon bootup, etc), but otherwise this is a very fine adapter indeed.

5 out of 5 eggsAsus USB-AC56

This review is from: ASUS USB-AC56 Dual-band Wireless-AC1200 USB 3.0 Wi-Fi Adapter Up to 400+867Mbps Wireless Data Rates WPA2

Pros: Very easy setup to get it working right away. Works with everything from Linux, Mac, Windows XP through Windows 8.1. I like to see continued support for Windows XP and Linux. Shows that Asus actually care about the consumers, you know, the people keeping them in business! Keep up the good work Asus!!!

Cons: Wish I had an AC router so I could get that claimed 800+ MB/Second transfer speed. No actual complaints to speak of so far.

Other Thoughts: If there were any bugs for Windows 8, they've been fixed to my knowledge.
