1 out of 5 eggsNoop not for Ubuntu 14.04

Pros: Smallish and would make a nice door stop for a mouse

Cons: No drivers supplied, and the code included can't be complied without help. My brother would builds drivers updated var types that now need to be structures, to get it to build. The resulting drive sort of works a 2.4GHZ and not at all a 5GHZ, although an IP is obtain and the SID connected. Purchased two of these cause of the description here/newegg that said Linux supported.

Other Thoughts: Oh, this is the only product I've used on Linux that cause the graphic console to abort back to ttys. Added feature is the complete lockup of the display requiring a cold boot.....

2 out of 5 eggsasus USB-AC51

Pros: Very small and aesthetically good looking item. Too bad that it does not work on Windows 8.1. Calling customer service (Half Hour wait) does not help at all since you are speaking to illiterate Indians (not the type with the feathers but the gals in Bangalore!).Works well with W 7 Prof.

Cons: Why claim that it works on W8.1 when it does not. The item I bought it for is a brand new Toshiba laptop S855 etc. You cannot install the drivers on W 8.1

Other Thoughts: Get a new Driver CD so that it will work on Windows 8.1

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great under Windows 7

Pros: Tiny. Wide range of protocols supported.

Cons: None in my case.

Other Thoughts: Running in a desktop computer with Windows 7 64-bit. Works fine. It's small and there's nothing sticking out to get busted off.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks well

Pros: My wife's laptop gets between 117 and 88 mps with it's Asus AC-51 USB adapter at the furthest point from the ASUS RT-AC68U router with three walls separation. It connects at 5GHz on AC protocol. Impressive. I like the small size of it and it is quite powerful..

Cons: Software and drivers that come with it work well, but the software's welcome screen pops open every time the laptop comes out Sleep mode and the USB dongle connects to the router. I haven't seen a disabling feature for that.

Other Thoughts: Works well with ASUS Routers, others have trouble connecting to routers by other manufacturers.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Connection and Slightly Faster than Competitors

Pros: - Small, compact design
- Solid, reliable connection
- Driver installation isn't terribly painful
- Fast enough for majority of applications
- Range is better than traditional nano adapters (thanks to 11ac)

Cons: - Single stream 11ac, but this was expected
- Roaming between APs wasn't lightning fast, but good enough
- If SNR/RSSI is big concern for your environment, I'd personally stick with ugly, larger adapters w/antenna

Other Thoughts: Tested on Windows 7/8/8.1 with various Ultrabooks.

We bought several nano-sized adapters to ultimately address the Lenovo Yoga 13's notoriously terrible (understatement) wifi adapter. The Asus USB-AC51 was the fastest of the adapters we tested, Buffalo AC433 was next best. This adapter maintained a reliable connection through all tests, never experiencing a single drop. Roaming speed/decision-making was acceptable, but nothing overly impressive.

Testing on Aruba AP-225 11ac hardware, real-world throughput peaked around 92Mbps, averaging around 45Mbps in typical office scenarios with obstructions/walls between you & AP.

In the end, users are very happy with this adapter and we will likely buy several more. I will not hesitate to recommend it to other Windows users.

I can't comment on Linux support; all our Ultrabooks were running Windows 7, 8, or 8.1.

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointing for Linux users

Pros: If you go out of your way (which I did), you can get it to work under Linux..

Cons: Poor support for Linux, even thoug the official ASUS web site claims this device is supported under Linux.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this particular device because the ASUS web site (as well as the NewEgg description) claims this wireless adapter is supported under Linux. Unfortunately, this is a far cry from the truth. Upon plugging in the device, it did not load any native drivers. As I did more research, it appears that you must manually download, compile, and install a staging driver not yet found in the mainline Linux kernel. After much stress and frustration, I finally got this blasted thing to work at relatively good speeds under Ubuntu.

Step 1) Download the official Linux driver from the ASUS web site: https://www.asus.com/Networking/USBAC51/#support

Driver & Tool > Linux > Utilities > download the .zip file

Step 2) Extract the archive(s)

Step 3) Enter the driver directory/os/linux/ and on the file config.mk in a text editor

Step 4) In config.mk, change the following from "n" to "y":

HAS_WPA_SUPPLICANT=n
HAS_NATIVE_WPA_SUPPLICANT_SUPPORT=n

Becomes...

HAS_WPA_SUPPLICANT=y
HAS_NATIVE_WPA_SUPPLICANT_SUPPORT=y

Step 5) In a terminal, navigate to the driver folder and run the following commands. Make sure you have the linux-headers package installed (which is required to build modules):

make
sudo make install
sudo modprobe mt7650u_sta <--- Or the correct module name

That should do it. A pain in the behind, I know. This will have to be repeated after each kernel upgrade.

Thanks for nothing, ASUS! Thanks for fooling us into believe the device is well "supported" under Linux...

I do NOT recommend this wireless USB adapter for Linux users. Look elsewhere!

1 out of 5 eggsNope.

Pros: very compact

Cons: Just doesn't work very well.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this to upgrade a triple-boot laptop from wireless-n to wireless-ac. I will be returning it immediately. I did not try this with Windows, but I can tell you that it does not perform well under OSX or Linux.

On the Mac side (Lion), it installs and runs fine but the transfer speeds I was seeing were about half what I was already getting with wireless-n (I suspect something to do with the limitations of USB 2.0?). The interface is also very poorly designed.

In Linux, the directions are horrendous. They are more like half-directions written in broken English. This is far from plug-and-play. Expect to be compiling drivers by hand and troubleshooting. After install and reboot, it seems to not play well with X. Almost immediately after login, the system freezes and I have to manually shutdown. I had to uninstall it in tty1. I would maybe troubleshoot it more, if not for the fact that it is already drastically underperforming under OSX, which was a much simpler install.

In short, wait for something better to come along.

5 out of 5 eggsFast and small

Pros: Reliable connection
Excellent throughput
Small size

Cons: None, once I properly installed drivers using compatibility mode on windows 8.1 machine

Other Thoughts: I purchased this adapter to upgrade an old laptop to take advantage of my new ASUS RT-AC68U Wireless-AC1900 router. After looking through usb adapters supporting wireless-ac, I chose this one because of its small size. The install cd gave me an error about an unsupported OS when I tried to put on my 8.1 system. I let the generic windows drivers load instead but quickly noticed the adapter wouldn't detect or connect to my 5G network. I contacted ASUS, who quickly responded and I was able to install proper drivers using windows 8 compatibility mode. Now the speeds are as advertised. I have many ASUS products and this is the first time I have contacted their support and the outcome was positive.

I definitely recommend this product.
