4 out of 5 eggsNot too Bad

Pros: Brand. Dual Band.
Good signal strength.

Cons: Not PnP for Win7. Proprietary Software.

Other Thoughts: Was disappointed that it was not Plug-n-Play. Had to install Asus software to get drivers from disc provided. Have not had any problems with it dropping out in the week that I have owned it. But I also change USB settings so that they do not shut off to save power.

3 out of 5 eggsMay not be meant for laptops

Pros: Small-ish, inexpensive dual band USB wireless adapter

Cons: 5 GHz AC band unreliable in noisy neighborhood.
Fragile (see below)
Limited Warranty

Other Thoughts: Owned it about 1 year. 5 GHz range never seemed to work all that well. Works reliably about 3 feet from the router (also ASUS). I'm fairly certain it due to all our older neighbors with their ancient 5 GHz wireless telephones. I used a network tool to determine that the 5GHz frequency band is extremely noisy in this neighborhood, so I couldn't really hold that against the adapter itself.

What it did do, and do well, was 2.4 GHz traffic. Seemed better than the internal laptop wireless. Only problem was I would bump it infrequently with the mouse, since the only USB ports on my laptop are on the right, and it sticks out about 3-4x as far as a Logitech unifying receiver.

After about 11 months of this, one evening I bumped it with a bit more force than usual - someone bumped my elbow into it, not an 'I dropped it on adapter first on the floor event' or anything - and the the external casing became loose. The housing did not crack, but the board connection to the housing got sloppy. The next week, I bumped it with the mouse again, and the tiny board inside snapped. Wireless instantly dropped off, and I realized that my adapter was broken beyond all repair.

Hopeful, I checked out the warranty. These items void the warranty:
- Hacking device
- Altering device
- Use in unusual circumstances
- Your computer gets a virus or hacked
- Installation or Removal (e.g. bad USB computer ports do damage its USB interface. I've seen this happen)
- Accidents

That last one's the big one, So, I doubt I'm covered. My recommendations are to plug it into a USB pigtail and plug that into the port, or use it with a desktop. If you use it with a desktop, be safe, plug it into the back. Again a USB pigtail may be preferable. It may be a good idea for ASUS to toss in a 6" pigtail in the future for these larger WiFi adapters. Or for NewEgg to have bundle deals.

Also not USB 3, though to be fair, USB 3.0 was still fairly exotic at the time I purchased this (about 1 year ago), and may not have been finalized at the time of this product's release.

2 out of 5 eggs5 GHz ?

Pros: works on 2.4 GHz networks

Cons: Doesn't recognize 5GHz networks. Not sure what selectable dual-band 5GHz is supposed to mean, but I can't see 5GHz signals, and that was the reason I bought it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Jeremy,

I want to thank you for posting this review and we are sorry to hear your experience with the unit. On behalf of ASUS we apologize for any inconvenience this issue has caused you.

Please allow me to assist you, please be advised that the adapter can detect one frequency at a time so you need to set the router to 5GHz frequency in order for the adapter to detect it and also you need to consider the distance of the adapter from the router since 5GHz frequency is for close distance connection only.

5 out of 5 eggsAC600 Wi-Fi Adaper (USB-AC51)

Pros: Works as advertised on my wife's Lenovo T530 Laptop.
Easy to set up with or without supplied CD disk.
Great value for the money.
So impressed that I just ordered another one for my Lenovo E520.

Cons: None to date.

Other Thoughts: Disregard naysayers. Some people either can't read instructions, or complain even if they're hung with a silver rope!

5 out of 5 eggsASUS AC51 Dual-Band Wireless Adapter

Pros: I purchased this to replace a single band 2.4G Netgear adapter. I really like the small, compact design of this wifi adapter, fits nicely in my desktop without protruding too much and the range is very good on both bands. Before you install the software go to the ASUS website and download their latest version for this device. When you install the software and to get best results, choose the option, “Only use Windows wireless function”. If you don’t choose this option, you will most likely get poor results as I did. I first went with the ASUS Utilities and received poor internet speeds on both bands and throughput was nowhere near the speeds advertised. After reinstalling and choosing the Windows wireless function did I get the advertised results.

Cons: Struggled with getting the adapter to work with the ASUS Utilities, I had to play around with the software until I found an option that worked.

1 out of 5 eggsLooks nice

Pros: Small and shinny. The software GUI is pretty.. :/

Cons: As others have stated the supplied drivers don't work with win8.1 and the new, "8.1" drivers work poorly at best. Unlike some reviews I'm able to connect on the 5 gig band, but unable on 2.4...
The adapter doesn't lose connection, but it's terribly slow. Best I've managed was around 26mbps, which is pathetic.

Other Thoughts: I'm not sure if the adapter's poor performance is all OS related or if it's simply a poor piece of hardware.

5 out of 5 eggsasus wireless ac adapter

Pros: Allows me to assess my wifi network. It also seems like the perfect size to take in and out of usb slots.(not too big or small)

Cons: none.

Other Thoughts: I haven't tested range on this. It is connected to a htpc in my living room about 15ft from my router so range is not really an issue for me.
