1 out of 5 eggsBad gamble

Pros: Turns on, has nice LEDs

Cons: Burns out completely just after warranty. Made it just about 6 months and all it does is flash those power LEDs.

Other Thoughts: I put in about 2 dozen refurbed RT-N16s over the last couple of years and they were great. Both the AC68Rs and the AC68Us are fast when they work, but the failure rate is atrocious. Not sure what's going on in QA with ASUS, but this is a disappointment.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear James,

Thank you for your time on posting this review, we are sorry to hear your experience with the ASUS routers. Please allow me to assist you.

Can we have a detailed information about the issue? have you called the support line for assistance? when you connect the power adapter of the router nothing is happening? are all the lights indicator not lighting up? can we also have the unit's serial number for me to check and verify the unit's warranty in case we need to process an RMA.

4 out of 5 eggsDead on arrival. No lights, no nothing. Dead wall wort

Pros: Love it now that I myself took care of Warrantying a dead wall wort.

Fast, covers the whole house w/o the need of a repeater.

More configuation option than Carter has pills. Mine and my Wifes Galaxy Note 5's have a super connection and throughput now

Cons: Cons would be ASUS Support. See my Other comments below describing my two calls into ASUS Support to have a dead wall wort replaced under Warranty. And this wall wort was defective as it was shipped.

It shipped with a dead wall wort. Hello Quality Control ........

Other Thoughts: Using a DVOM I determined the wall wort was defective. It showed no output.

Knowing no output I called ASUS Support not once, but twice. TWO calls and was rebuffed both times. Sad.

The first call I was directed to the ASUS E-Store and I asked why she was directing me to buy a wall wort when it is under Warranty. Mumble mumble nor real answer was forthcoming from her.

Second call I was told to return it to NewEgg for exchange. Say what? This is a Warranty issue that should have been covered by ASUS, not me spending my time, my $13.56 to return it, and then wait an indeterminable amount of time receiving one back.

The big garage sale site beginning with eB to the rescue. I found an exact ASUS wall wort from a Seller on that big garage sale site beginning with eB only 45 miles away. $33.99 and it was delivered the next day as me and the Seller are so close by. Thank you that big garage sale site beginning with eB and USPS.

1 out of 5 eggsTook the chance on refurb...

Pros: Great Specs highly rated on many sites. At least it can be returned. Newegg returns are headache free...

Cons: Dead on arrival, no power, no lights nothing...

Other Thoughts: These should all be checked before they ship to at least make sure they power on...

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Robert,

Thank you for your time on posting this review, I understabd that you are disappointed with your ASUS router purchase. Please allow me to assist you.

When you connect the power adapter to the router was there any reaction to the router? or all the light indicators were totally not turning on?may I know the steps that you have taken to try to troubleshoot the problem? ASUS products undergo intensive quality control testings and final inspections for both hardware and software before sending it out to the stores worldwide. ASUS provides warranty for the unit in order to fix or repair any isolated factory escape defect.

5 out of 5 eggsAbsolutely thrilled with AC68U

Pros: I took a risk buying two of these refurb routers despite a 3-egg rating. This isn't just the best bang for your buck, you're actually getting the best router out there without sacrificing much of anything. Many comparisons have shown this, and I can confirm with my own testing.

I have a fairly large 2 floor layout. Had a Netgear 1900 dual band AC router and a similar Linksys one. Tried them individually, as repeaters, and as access points. Those routers just suck. They don't go the distance, bandwidth fell off when you go in the next room. I could never see above 80-90 Mpbs over AC. I have nearly zero interference from neighbors and little from household items.

Then I got one AC68U, which basically covered the whole house, just like that. One router blew away two routers wired together in AP mode. Got 300 Mbps in rooms adjacent to the router, 400Mbps in the room with the router, and 50 - 100 Mbps in the far corners upstairs.

Then I got a second AC68U, and that's when I realized that I'm set with WiFi in my house for a while. In a wireless repeater mode, my entire upstairs all of the sudden went from having 50 to 150 Mbps in the far corners, and un unbelievable 200 - 300 Mbps when hovering upstairs above router. However, it was when I ran an ethernet upstairs and set up the 2nd unit as an AP that I saw the WiFI magic. Two routers, ~4K sq ft, covers entire house with a minimum of 200 Mbps in the "worst" areas.

Those aren't theoretical numbers, that's a solid 25 - 50 MBps transfer speed all over my house. This has implications for really putting a NAS to good use, streaming 4K, etc.

Asus killed it with this one, good job!

Cons: USB 2.0 on back. This will probably never impact me, but why? Otherwise no complaints.

5 out of 5 eggsGet it....NOW!

Pros: Everything wi-fi works better than ever!

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: This is the third wi-fi I have bought and the best ever. I had even tried adding an extender on my previous unit and this has ended all my connection issues! No more extender. My unit is located in and addition onto my house and is actually behind a bick chimney. Until now, nothing did much of a job getting around it.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat router and file server

Pros: 1. Easy set up
2. Fast data transfer on USB attached drive
3. Stable and fast wifi and ethernet connection

Cons: For what I need, it works very well. Of course, I wish it were cheaper.

Other Thoughts: I have had the router for over 6 months and have not had any issues with it. I use the attached USB drive as a personal cloud drive that I can access from outside my home network. I also use the attached USB drive for storing files on my home network. I have a Fire TV stick with Kodi side loaded on it and can watch the videos off of the attached USB drive on the router. As far as the data transfer, I had a RT-N56U before and it would get about 12gb per sec transfer while this RT-AC68R gets about 27gb per sec, so that is something I like to see.

5 out of 5 eggsNo problems, easily best in category

Pros: My netgear 1900 AC router just made it in a 1BR apt with ~130 mbps throughput with moderate interference. It sucked when moved to a much larger house across multiple floors. An older linksys was even worse.

The ASUS 68 is killing it. Regularly getting ~300 mbps within a reasonable distance to the router, and ~100 in the corners of the house. This router actually makes FiOS 100/100 internet feasible, where other routers can't even give you the full bandwidth. I was concerned with getting a refurb unit, but no surprises thus far, knock on wood. It's been about a month. For me, this is clearly the best bang for the buck at the moment. Older N devices throughout the house have no problems. There are roughly 10-12 devices contacted to one throughout the day.

Cons: None so far, let's hope it stays that way.

2 out of 5 eggsFilthy

Pros: - It works, sort of
- Set up was easy
- Firmware update was easy

Cons: - The unit was gross. Dusty and sticky stuff on it. I needed to use a lot of Lysol wipes to get it in touchable condition.

- WiFi signal is about the same as my old Comcast router from a million years go. Across the house I'm getting 19Mbps on 5Ghz. (Tested on my ASUS phone using the Netgear Home WiFi Testing App)

Other Thoughts: I'll give it a few more days then I'll RMA this thing. Waste of time and money. Get a Netgear. This is the first thing I have bought off Newegg that didn't work, but I cant blame them, they didn't make it.

Trust the other reviewers here, getting a good one is like winning in Vegas.

P.S. Asus, if you respond with your form letter response like I have seen in so many other reviews here, yes I have upgraded to the latest firmware, yes it is not near other electrical equipment. It's just a poor refurb product.

2 out of 5 eggsROUTER IS DEFECTIVE

Pros: Fast router no doubt.

Cons: The wireless keeps shutting off. I kept reseting the router and it didn't work. At one point the wireless would not turn back on. RMA

1 out of 5 eggsVery used router

Pros: Nice GUI interface with easy setup. Easy to upgrade firmware.

Cons: Doesn't work well. It half way works with only one band 2.4 Ghz; other than that I don't know I didn't test the cloud function and other USB capabilities.

Other Thoughts: Out of the box it looked like it was used. It appeared dusty and someone has quickly dusted it off and packaged it. I bet the original problem was overheating and the 5 Ghz transmitter would stop working. This what I have going on now. Usually when I buy refurbished it looks brand new. I will probably ask for my money back. I don't think I can trust the brand any longer. It appears to be a failed unit that was just repackaged.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Paul,

I want to thank you for posting this review and I understand that you have an issue with the unit. On behalf of ASUS we apologize for any inconvenience this issue has caused you but let me go ahead and further assist you. Have you tried updating the firmware of the unit or try to restore the unit to factory settings to try to fix the issue? with regard to the refurbished issue please check with the reseller of the unit if it's purchased within 30 days and ask for assistance also can we have the unit's serial for me to verify the warranty of the unit?
