1 out of 5 eggsCould be a great router if it worked

Pros: Dual core, dual band with 802.11AC, very good range, a lot of features

Cons: While the 5GHz band works very well, the 2.4GHz band is extremely unstable. Been using the latest official firmware and merlin. Both have the same issue. The speed fluctuation is just so bad. Sometimes I can get around 100mbps and sometimes I can only get something close to 0. It's not about the signal strength (always very good throughout my house, >-65db) or the interference from other wireless signals (they are much weaker). It's the router itself.

Other Thoughts: I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out what is wrong. It turns out the time I spent is probably more than a few of these routers. Plus it's very frustrating to guess what's wrong. I have no idea if it's due to "refurbished" or the router design itself.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We do value your time and effort in posting a review about our products. I certainly understand the concern you have with the router that is having an unstable connection. Have you tried changing the channel bandwidth of the router to 40 MHz or 80 MHz and control channel to 1,6 or 11? Please try to do power cycle with the router, first turn off the modem then the router. Turn it back on after 2mins. Usually, reconfiguring the wireless setup will re-established internet connection. If the problem persists, the WLAN driver or network services was corrupted, resetting the system to factory settings should resolve internet connection issue. Please email me back at customerloyalty@asus.com and place case # N150450293 in the subject line for a reference.

Best regards,
Manuel

3 out of 5 eggsPoor Refurb Quality Control

Pros: The basic router configuration set-up is easy and quick. I can't compare it to other ac routers, but it significantly increased the throughput on my Wireless N adapter, and my newer ac devices are loving it.

Cons: It should be simpler to share a USB drive on the network. Like, plug and play easy. I still haven't figured this out.

Other Thoughts: Mine came with a broken power adapter. I could tell it was the original since the previous owner left a Velcro strap on it. I imagine the tech that was supposed to refurbish it plugged the router into his bench, found out that it worked, and repackaged it...never bothering to check the adapter. I found an old 19v laptop brick that I could use temporarily until I find a better replacement.

1 out of 5 eggsThe Worst!!

Pros: None!! My N66 has better wireless connectivity and throughput than the AC68U.

Cons: Cost, GUI setup, Tech Support, User Experience. Buy at RISK!! The Asus video showing it takes 30 seconds to set up the AC68U is false for almost all applications, except for the absolute basic/basic setup. and based upon an Asus Tech, in perfect conditions, installing the router.

Other Thoughts: I have a RT-N66U set to Media Bridge
and needed to set my new RT-AC68U in Media Bridge as well. When doing so, the AC68U shuts down the RT-N66U and neither works. Asus has NO simple configuration illustration to set the AC68U in a Media Bridge
mode and keep the N66U in Media Bridge mode so both can Bridge to my Verizon router seamlessly. Now, when I removed the N66U completely and tried to access the GUI of the AC68U it only access the Verizon router as the Verizon Router and the AC68U both use a default 192.168.1.1 IP address to access the GUI.

5 out of 5 eggsThis router is absolutly amazing

Pros: This router is absolutly amazing, I get connection while im outside in my yard, which is crazy to me. Speeds aren't hindered at all. I have a 105down/15up connection through comcast and ill get that speed on my galaxy s4 when i do a speed test. It replaced an aging DIR-655 that was failing/disconnecting/weak connection. I couldnt be happier.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: totally worth the $200. Best router on the market right now for personal use.
