2 out of 5 eggsFrequently stops working

Pros: When it is working, I get great speeds. Signal strength is great across the house. Right now the data rate is 585 Mbps.

Cons: Frequently stops working. Then I have to unplug it for half a minute and plug it back in. Once plugged back in, it usually works like a charm. Not great if you play Network games. Constantly kicked out of the game.

Other Thoughts: I do not recommend this product if reliability is important to you.

2 out of 5 eggs90 Day Warranty

Pros: always connected

Cons: slow compared to Netgear
ugly warranty sticker
6 days for 3 day delivery

Other Thoughts: As of January 5, 2016 the product page for the refurb ASUS USB-AC53/11/GB_US shows 1 year Limited Warranty. When the adapter arrives the box has a 90 Day warranty sticker. The adapter itself has a big sticker covering one side that reads 90 day limited warranty. So if you are thinking about buying this because of the longer warranty, think twice. I wrote to Newegg about this but never got a response. Newegg used to be a shared secret between electronic hobbyists, audio enthusiasts and computer guys. Now they are just another mediocre online retailer. As for the adapter its performance is mediocre as well. I compared it to the Netgear A6200. Both are USB wireless adapters rated at 300/867 Mbps. Connected to a desktop Windows 7 machine and a D-Link DIR-868L approx. 50 feet away. The ASUS connected at 350-450 mbps most of the time, with a max of 470 mbps. The NetGear connected at 450-750 mbps most of the time, with a max of 866.5 mbps. These speeds are as reported by Windows 7. In use the Netgear was always faster. There were connection problems with the Netgear but they were easily fixed by disabling “Minimum Power Consumption” in the adapter properties (device manger). Aesthetically the ASUS adapter looks pretty cheesy with the huge warranty sticker. Not recommended…go with the Netgear.

1 out of 5 eggsDo not buy.

Pros: It's pretty good when it's actually working

Cons: Randomly will disable itself for no reason. The only way I can figure out how to get it to reconnect to the internet after it does this is to unplug it and replug it in. It does this about once every 2 hours. If I could return this I would do it in a hearbeat. What a waste of my money.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Christian,

Thank you for taking the time to communicate to us why our ASUS products did not meet your expectations. Please accept our sincerest apology for any trouble or inconvenience, we have caused you. I do understand that you're having an issue with the unstable connection on this device.

Please use this troubleshooting step.

Step 1 - Please try to different PC or laptop.
Step 2 - Please try to uninstall the driver and try to download the latest driver on this link http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=USB-AC53&p=11&s=1.
Step 3 - If you are experiencing an intermittent connection, please try to place the router to a different location. That's why you encountered the disconnection from the internet due to interference. You should also pay attention to the kinds of materials the router and adapter is near. For example, placing the router on a metal desk or up against a metal wall will cause problems. Signals can travel through a wood desk easily, but metal will obstruct the signals. This is the examples appliances can cause wireless interference, including cordless phones, baby monitors, and microwave ovens.

For further technical assistance or if you want to discuss this matter with me, please email me back at customerloyalty@asus.com and put case # N150995590 in the subject line for your reference.

I'm here to help you and all others with these issues, as our customer loyalty department dedicated to bringing a resolution to all issues related to our products.

Thank you for choosing ASUS.

Best regards,
Donabell

4 out of 5 eggsASUS USB 1200

Pros: Works well @ 5g. Very Fast!!

Cons: When I first got this adapter my new router hadn't arrived yet. At 2.4 it dropped frequently or just didn't work.

Other Thoughts: Works fine at 5g. which is ok with me.

2 out of 5 eggsFrustrated

Pros: Pretty fast when working

Cons: - Keeps disconnecting, then cannot connect any more. Sometimes unplugging then plugging back in works, but that's annoying at best.
- Can't install just the driver; must install Asus utilities (seriously? so we waste memory for nothing? By now, shouldn't you recognize that the built-in Windows one is good enouhg?)

Other Thoughts: I must say this so others can avoid making the same mistake I did. Avoid it.

2 out of 5 eggsConnectivity Issues

Pros: Fast when connected to Asus RT-AC87U

Cons: The stand/cable which the adapter plugs into quit working after a few hours and the laptop clip was not included per the owners manual and listing.

After every reboot the unit has to be unplugged and reconnected in order to function.
