5 out of 5 eggsGreat so far. Have had problems with ASUS products in the past.

Pros: Runs well. Have not had to reboot. Very fast Internet speeds.

Cons: Time will tell if this ASUS product preforms.. Have had 2 others that FAILED. Although they were Mother Boards.
We shall see. If this FAILS. No more ASUS products for me.

Other Thoughts: I am done with ASUS Mother Boards. They FAIL far too much for me. Their replacements have isuuse too.
BAD UPS ports. Bent Corners on the board. ETC.
Always replace them with a Gigibyte Board.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat router if on sale

Pros: Has just about anything you would want built in.

Cons: Pricey for hardware you get.

Other Thoughts: I flashed it with merlin on day one. I love the Bandwidth control on this router. Port forwarding was a breeze. Two weeks and no reboots or slow downs. In fact. My wan speed increased. Replaced a wndr4300. So not sure why. Important tip. Buy a cheap laptop cooler. My temp dropped 10 degrees. Well worth the 6 bucks I spent on it.

4 out of 5 eggsSo far a great product with one really big firmware upgrade issue

Pros: For me, great 802.11ac coverage which I have not had on other products which were very buggy. I cannot comment anything but this unit as an AP as I am not using as a router

Cons: The only con from me so far was a firmware upgrade problem. Since this is only an AP for me, I was doing the upgrade remotely from work through a home server computer connected to my system via wired connection. It seems to go off without a hitch. When I returned home, my wifi devices were not connected. Came to find out that the firmware upgrade had reset my SSID and removed password protection leaving my home network exposed to anyone for several hours. Be warned. Really, really, really stupid software design

Other Thoughts: Would recommend the product (at least as an access point) but watch out for firmware upgrates

3 out of 5 eggsEasy VPN, Crumby WiFi -> Use Merlin Firmware Instead

Pros: VPN setup is very easy (well, setting up a VPN ranges from medium to extremely hard so I should say it makes it relatively easy).
GUI is surprisingly nice.

Cons: 1) WiFi signal goes into the weeds every couple of days. Sometimes rebooting helps. Sometimes not, see point 3.
2) XBox 360 seems to hate this thing and exaccerbates WiFi issues mentioned in point 1.
3) If I try to use an extra AP, the "networkmap" process runs to 100% for all eternity and the box heats up a LOT. Then WiFi becomes utter garbage and sometimes the wired pc's can't access the Internet very fast at that point either.

Other Thoughts: Overall it's got very nice WAN to LAN throughput but the WiFi instability was killing me. A process called "networkmap" would almost constantly use 100% CPU making the router run hot. I installed the AsusWRT Merlin firmware instead and it has DRAMATICALLY improved stability. Been running about 10 days now without problems (previously the router was only stable for 3-5 days). I'm going to change my ranking to 3 eggs. Sorry Asus, but you can't have 4 or 5 eggs when you can't have your stock firmware behave properly. It would have been 1 egg without Merlin saving the day... Seriously, get yourselves together I don't have a complicated setup at my house or anything!

5 out of 5 eggsA delight to set up and use

Pros: Great product, Very Fast connections

Cons: None...

Other Thoughts: This was an excellent deal at the regular Newegg price. As I was considering which item to buy, I got the weekly e-mail from Newegg with a code that took a whopping $30.00 off of the price, and combined with the FREE shipping, made this a deal I could not pass up!

3 out of 5 eggsGot a fast router for sale

Pros: Very fast, easy UI to navigate in. Doesn't run too hot. WIFI signal strength (N and AC), is adequate but nothing to brag about.

Cons: The WIFI connection (AC and N) doesn't seem to be the most stable in the world. Occasional reboots are necessary because connection is dropped and renewing from the computer side doesn't work. A Brother printer plugged into the USB port gets disconnected in some way. The printer is still recognized in the router's UI, but computers will not see it. Only a reboot restores functionality. Sometimes the connection to the ISP (PPPOE connection) is lost and will not re-establish automatically, so of course, another reboot.

Other Thoughts: The frequent WIFI and USB disconnections are annoying enough to take off 2 eggs. It doesn't seem like I'm the only one with these problems. ASUS doesn't seem to have very good quality control on these things or maybe the hardware is just mediocre. To be fair, in my experience, I've never owned a router that I've been totally satisfied with. Every one seems to have some annoying issues such as these. Wireless technology just inherently sucks I guess.

5 out of 5 eggsVery happy with this router

Pros: Painless Installation
Attractive design - white is a nice change of pace
Performs well so far
Really like the layout of the UI

Cons: Automatic firmware update broken

Other Thoughts: Bought this to replace a tired old Netgear dual-band wireless-N router that was giving me fits. Old router would drop the ball when too many clients were connected.

Install was super easy. My internet is only a 60Mb/s connection, but multiple speedtests showed I wasn't losing a bit of it to the router.

I have a 8-core Mac Pro running file-server duties using OS X Server, an 8-core HP Z800 workstation as my main computer, my wife's iMac, my daughter's laptop, 2 phones, 2 tablets, PS3/PS4, and however many laptops I happen to be working on at the time (generally 2-6) all pulling from this router at the same time, and everybody's a happy camper.

Automatic firmware upgrade didn't work, but this is an issue (auto updates) Asus has had for years. Manually firmware update went without a hitch.

AiCloud/Download Master seem like nice features, just haven't had a chance to try them out yet...

1 out of 5 eggsDON'T BUY

Pros: None

Cons: 1 egg and I'm being generous on the basis that I am a 15+ year satisfied Asus customer. Right out of the box this thing has done little more than give me problems. First off I couldn't get it to access the Asus server for firmware update. No biggie there I just did a manual upgrad. From there it just went down hill. At first it seemed to configure properly. and easily However we immediately discovered a random inability to access various web pages, both non-secure and secure. This was totally random. I could access a site, and then next time I tried I could not. As significant as this issue was my first priority was to enable us to remote access our security system. Port forwarding was setup & all procedures were followed correctly with no positive results. I even allowed the surveillance systems tech support to log into the router to see if they could find a problem. They found no issues, all settings were correct. Finally I called Asus tech support but for all the good it did I would have been better off calling Burger King. Their "tech" had no answers and no interest in logging into my router to see if he could find a problem. I finally decided to do a RMA. I unplugged the router and was about to disconnect it when I decided to try one more thing. I plugged it back in and all of a sudden it allowed remote access to our cameras. However, it still is blocking various websites. Several sites, such as canyouseeme, and others (3 of which we MUST be able to access) have been consistently blocked. I'm still researching the issue but so far with no results. I have lost $$ on this job. Even if I finally resolve this issue without having to do a RMA, I could never in good conscience recommend this router to anyone. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. This is the first time in 15+ years I've had a problem with an Asus product, and the first time I've had to contact Asus tech support. I still highly recommend Asus products, but their tech support stinks. And the AC66 series routers are thumbs down.

Other Thoughts: Another tech friend of mine has the Asus AC87. He's a happy camper, wished I had gone with that.

2 out of 5 eggsFirmware Nightmare!

Pros: Very fast compared to my old DLINK wireless N router. Very sleek looking design.

Cons: I have been a fan of Asus products for about a year now, even used mostly Asus components when I built my latest desktop. That being said, I am no longer getting that warm fuzzy this is high quality hardware vibe. I updated the firmware as soon as I had it setup and the 5ghz band completely disappeared from all of my wireless devices. After doing some research I found out that this was a well known issue with others complaining. I then installed a slightly older (1 version back) version of the firmware which brought the 5ghz broadcast back but killed the NAT Loopback feature. More research and found this was a well known issue with that version of firmware. What's going on Asus? Are we beta testers for you? I paid a lot of money for this router and I would expect it to work. I wasted over 12 hours screwing with this thing before finally reverting to the original firmware that it came installed with. Buyers beware when updating firmware, I no longer trust anything that they will release. Absolutely ridiculous!

Other Thoughts: This would have gotten a 5 egg review had the firmware actually worked. I am blown away that they are releasing firmware with such huge problems. I no longer trust them!
