1 out of 5 eggsjunk

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC87U Wireless-AC2400 Dual-band Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11g, IEEE 802.11n, IEEE 802.11ac, IPv4, IPv6 AiProtection with Trend Micro for Complete Network Security

Pros: looks good

Cons: drops WAN connection, I reboot everyday. 5ghz connection lasted 2 weeks now gone. Lot of money for bad performance. tech help laughable. back to my 50 dollar netgear. Asus can come to my house, pick this up and give me a refund, when they do I might consider buying another Asus product

Other Thoughts: no

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Router

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC87U Wireless-AC2400 Dual-band Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11g, IEEE 802.11n, IEEE 802.11ac, IPv4, IPv6 AiProtection with Trend Micro for Complete Network Security

Pros: Never fails to max out my 125mb/s limit from comcast.
Lan ports work well
Updating firmware is a breeze
Allows turning off dhcp
Set DNS and WINS servers
Easy port forwarding with computer names instead of ips
Nice web interface
From my 1st floor, it reaches my basement, my second floor and my unattached garage with no loss of speed.

Cons: It isn't a 10gb/s switch.

Other Thoughts: If you care about page load times, I would recommend that you do not use Trend Micro's "Malicious Sites Blocking" it can add about two seconds to page load time. If you are getting this router you probably know what you are doing and don't need that kind of protection anyway.

3 out of 5 eggsokay I guess

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC87U Wireless-AC2400 Dual-band Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11g, IEEE 802.11n, IEEE 802.11ac, IPv4, IPv6 AiProtection with Trend Micro for Complete Network Security

Pros: Works well most of the time, range is pretty good (I have a 2 story house + basement; the router is in my basement and it reaches on the 2nd floor with full bars- nice) works nice when it's in the "most of the time" part..

Cons: It sometimes drops connection which is really REALLY annoying.. With a price tag of $250, I expect it to be stable ALL of the time, not just most of the time. Anyway, I'm on the fence with this router. It's good but it could (and should) be better. Wouldn't recommend it to everyone, especially people who are not very good with networking.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for your time on posting this review, we are sorry to hear your experience with the ASUS router. Please allow me to assist you.

Please try the steps below to try to fix the connection issue.

Check for interfering devices i.e. Cordless Phone / Microwave Oven / Bluetooth Devices
Check the wireless settings {Wireless Channel: 1 / 6 / 11 }
Try to test with 5ghz
Try with different wireless computer or other wireless devices and check the connection if its stable
Try using the hard wire cable and check the connection if its stable
Bypass router and connect PC directly to the modem then check the connection if its stable
Update the firmware
Restore the router to factory defaults
Reconfigure the router
Change channel bandwidth to 40 Mhz then to 80, control channel to 157, DTIM to 3 and
Beacon Interval to 70.

1 out of 5 eggsNot a good router!

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC87U Wireless-AC2400 Dual-band Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11g, IEEE 802.11n, IEEE 802.11ac, IPv4, IPv6 AiProtection with Trend Micro for Complete Network Security

Pros: Looks cool

Cons: Constantly dropping users and super slow WAN speed, have to reboot 3-4 times a week and it will work for a few days sometimes 1 day then it's slow again. I am constantly looking on ASUS site for updates and always trying the newest updates hoping for a fix but nothing....horrible.... i have ac66u and n66u and they are fine....but this thing was a waste of my money...

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Sam,

Thank you for your time on posting this review, we are sorry to hear your experience with the ASUS router. Please allow me to assist you.

Can we have a detailed information about the issue? may I know also the steps that you have tried to try to fix the connection? Please try the steps below to try to troubleshoot the router's connection problem.

* Place your router in an open and strategic area since this device uses radio waves to communicate.
* Do not place your wireless device or computer right next to the router because the 18-inch radius around the router is a wireless dead zone.
* Ensure that the distance between the router and the wireless device is three (3) meters apart as this is the area with the best signal strength.
* Test if you are having connectivity issues with your ISP, connect one (1) computer directly to the modem using an Ethernet cable and observe the connection for a few hours. If you're still getting connectivity problems, contact your ISP for technical support.
* To resolve wireless speed and strength issues, it is recommended to use WPA-Auto Personal.
* If you wish to attain optimal Wireless-N speeds set your wireless security to WPA2-Personal.

For further assistance or if you want to discuss this matter with me, please email me at customerloyalty@asus.com and put case #N160215587 in the subject line for a reference. 5 out of 5 eggsBest Router I've ever owned!

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC87U Wireless-AC2400 Dual-band Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11g, IEEE 802.11n, IEEE 802.11ac, IPv4, IPv6 AiProtection with Trend Micro for Complete Network Security

Pros: I upgraded my FIOS router to the Quantum router and have had nothing but problems with constant dropped connections with all my wireless devices for the last 6 months. I recently purchased this router and my family couldn't be happier with no dropped connections and the range is great throughout the house. I upgraded the firmware to the latest at the end of December and I haven't run into any problems.

Cons: None so far.

1 out of 5 eggsFirmware update killed it.

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC87U Wireless-AC2400 Dual-band Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11g, IEEE 802.11n, IEEE 802.11ac, IPv4, IPv6 AiProtection with Trend Micro for Complete Network Security

Pros: Purchased from newgg on 7/5/2015. Super fast when it was working. I loved the lay out of the console and setup.

Cons: I updated the firmware and it has gone completely unstable. Details below

Other Thoughts: Updated the firmware and now here are the list of problems.
WAN connections drops and reconnects, drops and reconnects constantly.
5G constantly stops working
I cannot change the lan settings at all. If I change the subnet, everything goes down on the wired network and my pc says there is an IP conflict. If I set my pc to a static IP on the same subnet (even default subnet after a reset), LAN is still down
If I click on the LAN>DHCP tab or the wireless tab, wired network goes down and get a screen that says settings have been changed, access router from wirless.

Steps taken to resolve. Tried 4 different firmware versions. Same results.
I held the reset button for 5 seconds, then started to rebuild my LAN subnet, as soon as I changed the subnet, everything goes down. All my nat policies are out the window
Reset to factory default, left everything at default, LAN and WAN constantly goes up and own.

I work from home and I'm completely dead in the water. Looks like I'll be driving to work for a while and hopefully ASUS or newegg can repair or replace it asap!

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsSo far an Outstanding Router

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC87U Wireless-AC2400 Dual-band Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11g, IEEE 802.11n, IEEE 802.11ac, IPv4, IPv6 AiProtection with Trend Micro for Complete Network Security

Pros: Easy set up, took about 20 minutes total including firmware update.
Extremely good signal strength on both 5 and 2.4GHz bands
Works flawlessly

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: I have been using this router for just over 3 months now, been waiting for the "problems" many seem to be having and nothing so far.
It is performing flawlessly has not dropped a signal even once, not even with my cell phone standing over 100 YARDS from my house.
The signal at that distance is weak but stays connected no problem.
We have 10 things, from 2 desktops, 2 laptops, an Ipad, phones, a Fire Stick, printer and a NAS server connected and not one single problem with anything.
We do lots of Netflix type downloading on two one Laptop and one PC both used as HTPCs with nary a glitch.

We are running on a 300MBps by 20MBps cable connection and I usually get on average 352MBps by 25MBps speed when not using QOS setup. However I do use it because the router gets rid of basically ALL our "Buffer Bloat" completely so even though the overall speed drops down to usually 285MBps by 22MBps because it cleans up all the buffer bloat our connection is much cleaner and in real world use is actually much snappier, pages load instantly.
My connection went from a D (Buffer Bloat) C (Line Quality) A (speed) to now its A, A+, A using the DSLReports speed test.

So I could not be more pleased with this router.
Zero signal drop, 2.4GHz reaches out at least 100+ yards from our house and remains at 5 full bars of signal strength a measured 30+ yards before it even loses one bar.
So I have perfect connectivity full 5 bar signal strength for not just the entire house upstairs and downstairs and in every room but also to a radius of 30+ yards outside the house.
I have the router sitting about 2' from the ceiling on the top shelf of my PC desk in upstairs bedroom, it is sitting on top of some Post-It note pads so that there is about a solid inch of airspace under it, the router just barely gets warm to the touch only in about a 3" circle dead center of router.

Now why all these others are having so many problems I have no idea, maybe a bit of QC issues where maybe 5-10% of routers could be defective. Odds are that a good 50% of these 1 stars are most likely user error.
I took a chance on it because when I looked at the professional reviews not ONE of them had any problems at all.
So take all these one stars with a block of salt.

All I know is that mine is perfect, runs beautifully, has fantastic range, and has never once dropped a signal.
