1 out of 5 eggsShoddy workmanship and terrible customer service!!

Pros: It at least functions if you're in the room or next to it. It looks nice.

Cons: Shoddy workmanship - one of the bits you screw the antennae on when you receive the product became increasingly loose until I think it may be completely detached now. So now I need to be within 10 feet to get reliable connection.
Customer service does not listen to the problem and just runs through the "troubleshooting" steps. Good luck fixing the antennae through the network connection! You can barely hear them half the call and in the end turns out you have to mail it to California at your cost and it'll just take about 3 weeks. Guess I'll look for a new router!

Other Thoughts: I would not recommend ASUS products to anyone.

4 out of 5 eggsGood router for the money

Pros: A lot of features. I put a 64GB usb in the port. It will create a media server which is very limited, but if you do not how to it. this one is as easy as just plug and play - - if you enable the option

Cons: none.

5 out of 5 eggsGood router

Pros: I bought this router due to my friend suggestions. He uses Asus router for many years without hazzard. I found Asus router has a loooot feature that I can use to secure my network and keep privacy. Maybe RT-AC55U is not the best one, but enough for my house.

Cons: Not so far

5 out of 5 eggsWorthy price to replace the old router

Pros: Pro: With 802.11ac standard, I think the CP ratio is quite high comparing to other brands. I don’t need too high-end product. Wi-Fi AC1200 is quite enough and RT-AC55U is good enough for me to buy it. My house is around 1700sqft, it's enough, i don't need to spend too much to upgrade my router, all the family members use internet smoothly.

The setting with ASUS router is easy. Following the install steps and I finish setting, everything work fine since Christmas 2015

Cons: No

1 out of 5 eggsAsus support isnt what it used to be

Pros: It works great for a few months then craps out

Cons: When the internal gigabit switch goes out and forces any and all devices to 100Mbps good luck getting an RMA.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this a few months ago as Asus used to be a rock solid company. When I built I would only use Asus boards and networking equipment. Previous calls with their American speaking support have been great and the few rma experiences I have had were flawless. However the gigabit switch on my router is shot and after hooking up three known good desktops/laptops to each port on the router with separate cables I was only able to get 100Mbps connection speed. Mind you in all of this troubleshooting I did not have any devices connected to the wan ports and also tried loading various versions of the official Asus firmware and Asus beta firmware. So I call up support last night to setup an RMA and was transferred to an Indian call center. I did not catch the technicians name but he first told me that my device was not under warranty and refused to setup an RMA. That was not the case and I told him I was getting my newegg receipt. He put me on hold then came back and said it was under warranty. Here's where it gets fun...He asks me to hook up my cable modem to the WAN port to troubleshoot the internal lan switch. So I did telling him this was not a WAN port issue but an issue with the INTERNAL LAN SWITCH. So what he drums up is that my modem is the reason the router lan ports are only connecting at 100Mpbs which was not the case as the modem was not plugged into the router period. Next he refused to setup a shipment of a replacement router to me first then I ship the old one back which is understandable but at this point would be a requirement to ever recommend an asus product again after this experience. He setup a pre paid label after an hour of begging and pleading to get the RMA setup. Please Asus train your overseas technicians to own up to your hardware issues and not blame the customers equipment as a cop out for not setting up an RMA! As previously stated I would love an advance RMA and in case you are reading this Asus my RMA number is USBV5C1145. So if you have read these reviews you'll notice this product is great WHEN it works.

1 out of 5 eggsNot Happy!!! Just bought it in late November 2015.

Pros: Fast when connected.

Cons: Need to cycle power every 24 hour. Would be lucky if I can get 48 hr.

Other Thoughts: I was happy with my previous Asus router as it almost never drop. Upgrade to this one so I can have network printer but very unsatisfied as I need to cycle/reset the power within 24 hour. Not sure if I can return this with no charge.

1 out of 5 eggsReturned to Newegg

Pros: Fast when working. USB 3.0.

Cons: Returned because it wouldn't stay up for more than about 48 hours at a time. Both LAN & wireless connectivity would disappear and then I'd have to recycle the power to restore the router. Apparently, ASUS has some QC issues with this model. A shame really because it's got a good feature set but reliability is paramount for our network.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Tom,

Thank you for your time on posting this review, we are sorry to hear your experience with the ASUS router. Please allow me to assist you.

Please try the steps below to try to fix the units issue.

• Place your router in an open and strategic area since this device uses radio waves to communicate.
• Do not place your wireless device or computer right next to the router because the 18-inch radius around the router is a wireless dead zone.
• Ensure that the distance between the router and the wireless device is three (3) meters apart as this is the area with the best signal strength
• To resolve wireless speed and strength issues, it is recommended to use WPA-Auto Personal.
• Please make sure that the router's firmware is up to date.

For further assistance or if you want to discuss this matter with me, please email me at customerloyalty@asus.com and put case #N151248295 in the subject line for a reference. 2 out of 5 eggsStops Broadcasting

Pros: I purchased this to replace a Linksys that had very little range. It resolved that problem like a charm. No more issues with broadcast signal.

Cons: It stops broadcasting every 1-3 days. The only way to get it back is to power cycle the unit. It's getting very annoying. Sometimes you can no longer reach the router itself, sometimes you can get to the internal interface but not the external. Initially, I was blaming my broadband provider, then realized it wasn't them at all. Tried updating the firmware, but it says it's up to date.

Other Thoughts: I can't recommend this router due to the fact it drops out way too often.

2 out of 5 eggsNot sure about this -- 36 hours and already a power reset needed

Pros: It's fast when working.

Cons: Setup was a real problem. If you change the user name (from admin) using the wizard, you can't log back into the router. Tried it twice and both times I had to hard reset the router. Finally just let it go default and changed the login from there. That worked but then when it complained about a time overlap. Had to google that issue and it turns out that it can't update time zone (firmware bug). So you have to reset it GMT. Save login info THEN change time zone. Uggh. So minus 1 1/2 eggs on setup. Anyone with less persistence might have just returned the thing as defective at this point.

Next issue popped up today. The Router has only been up for 36 hours and it suddenly lost all connectivity both WAN and LAN (wired). Had to cycle the power to restore everything. Hopefully just a one time thing but if it happens again. This thing is going back to Newegg. Minus another 1 1/2 eggs.

Other Thoughts: I've been working with networks for 15+ years. This is the worst out of the box experience I've had with any router.
