1 out of 5 eggsUnit does not function

Pros: None

Cons: Many

Other Thoughts: The IOCREST AP Router seemed like it would support a roaming WiFi battery powered network so I could tether my Camera to an iPhone app to transmit images on the move. Could only connect to it once from the phone and then it would not respond. in AccessPoint mode it requires an ethernet connection otherwise does not broadcast the SSID kinda useless for an add-hock network. SYBA tech was responsive but shared little useful information.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We apologize this this product did not meet your expectations.

Perhaps there is a product already made for that purpose.

Thank you for leaving us your valuable feedback.

Regards, SYBA CST 07012013

2 out of 5 eggsVery Inconsistent

Pros: Does what it says... initially.
Can support AP and WiFi Adaptor modes.
Small, portable, USB powered.

Cons: Inconsistent: product worked for the first day but right when I changed a setting (such as SSID or channel), my Android phone can no longer connect to the network. It can still connect to other wireless networks. I checked with my PS3 and that cannot connect to it either.

Other Thoughts: If I can ever figure out what I'm doing wrong with this product, it might be fixable. There is little documentation across the internet for it, but for $17 it might be worth your money.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,

Sometimes, reconnecting is required when an SSID or channel are being changed. Due to more seaurity settings built-in into our device, PS3, or newer Smartphones; any changes will cause our device to reset. Which means, users need to re-enter all the necessary information again.

Sorry for the lack of documentation. This is an area we will keep improving on, here at SYBA.

We are more than willing to provide all of our customers with prompt exchanges whenever a product becomes defective.

SYBA offers an on-line RMA form, the user can easily fill out the form and submit it for a quick RMA return and exchange. It is SYBA's policy to answer all customer inquiries within 24 hours (M-F)

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad for a low-power access point

Pros: -Compact
-Easy to use
-Relatively low power consumption
-Consistent for limited amount of testing I've done

Cons: Very slow (consistent 3mbps down, 4.5mbps up per on a corporate network with internet speeds exceeding 600mbps on gigabit connections)
Very limited configuration interface. Single HTTP post form options for SSID, channel, and (static) IP.
Configuration interface available only from wireless. You cannot access it from the wired side of the connection.
SSID is only partially configurable - it MUST start with IOCREST
Requires WEP, or open. No way to use WPA.
Only allows channels 3, 6 ,9, and 11
Gets pretty hot
Granted its size and the fact that its USB powered, all of these cons are to be expected. Haven't cracked it open yet to see what kind of hardware is inside, but I can imagine its memory is measured in low kilobytes. The entire web interface is a single HTML form 1.42kb including headers which are likely hard-coded.

Other Thoughts: Purchased this to allow a low-power ARM macrocontroller running linux to host a wireless network in AP mode while running on battery/solar power in a car. The ARM board allows for full control and monitoring of devices inside the car across the internet. The USB 3g connection will be shared on this access point as an added bonus for passengers of the car to use.

Power consumption was a major consideration here and pretty much the only consideration. Most access points use well over 10 watts. This got me down to right where I need to be.
Volts | mA | Watts
5.02 | 283| 1.42 - Idle
5.02 | 321| 1.61 - Running speedtest

5.02 is the supply voltage during the tests. It did not fluctuate at all, so the wattage is accurate. The amperage stayed stable in either state. There was nearly no bounce at all.
