SonicWall’s rackable SSL-VPN 200 is a clientless remote access appliance which gives your employees secure, reliable access to files and applications, email, and intranet content on your company’s network. The SSL-VPN 200 works behind your firewall, and it’s incredibly easy to install, configure and manage.
SonicWall doesn’t charge per-tunnel licensing with the SSL-VPN (the unit doesn’t restrict concurrent tunnel numbers, though they recommend 10), so your small company has the flexibility to give remote access to everyone who needs it! Once their policies are set, all they will need is a computer with a standard web browser.
Granular policy configuration controls let your network administrator give each user access to everything he needs, and nothing more, and it couldn’t be easier, thanks to SonicWall’s intuitive GUI. Once users log in and authenticate, they’ll see their individualized Virtual Office portals, where they can access all of their permitted files, applications, and bookmarks. Don’t let VPN access be a constant hassle for your IT folks! The SSL-VPN 200 makes it secure and painless for administrators and users alike.

- Pros: Works great with 1 user connected.
- Cons: When connecting to the VPN, 2 users can ping the primary domain controller on our network just fine. As soon as one connects to a network share on the same box, the second VPN connection slows down a LOT. When a simple, small file transfer is initiated, the second no longer works. Browsing a directory structure or doing a file transfer overloads the VPN. Even after the first user disconnects, the second will continue to time out on pings.
This VPN solution is advertised to support 10 users. With minimal usage, it doesn't even work for 2. After dealing with SonicWall support, they were unable to resolve our issue. They even told us that it shouldn't handle 10 connections, that we should expect more like 5 or 6. Still, we get no more than two.
- Other Thoughts: After this, I was told the SSL-VPN 2000 would be a better solution for us. If I can expect to get 1 user out of what is advertised as 10, should I expect only 5 users on the SSL-VPN 2000? No thanks, we've already wasted enough time and money. OpenVPN here we come.
Excellent SMB SSL-VPN Box
- Pros: Better than IPSec VPN's, much more control from the appliance as opposed to VPN clients that may need config updates. Once the NetExtender "client" software is installed on the remote workstation it's very easy to use. It works great and does everything it says.
- Cons: The NetExtender "client" reloads at Windows startup by default, but can be switched off in Preferences. I'd prefer the default was no load at startup.
- Other Thoughts: This is the easiest way to SSL encrypt Outlook Web Access I've ever seen! The "Virtual Office" landing page is not as configurable as I would have liked, but it works just fine. Although easier to config than some other brands, setting any of these up is not for the faint of tech. You really need to understand IP addressing & routing before you tackle ANY of these SSL VPN devices. They don't act or react quite like an IPSec VPN device does.

Went from mediocre to awesome
- Pros: * Easy to install
* Provides more granular remote access (just RDP or just a file share vs. a full VPN with access to the entire LAN) * Very easy to use VPN client (aka NetExtender) * Works well with Macs, Firefox, etc * Support for drag and drop file transfer to file shares through a web browser * Good group-based administration * Integrates with AD
- Cons: * SSL-VPN 200 doesn't provide good multi-portal access for different URLS (SSL-VPN 2000 does)
* Minor learning curve for advanced features (multiple portals, domains, etc) * Not suited for larger offices, but fine for 5-10 concurrent users * Price and cost of support
- Other Thoughts: When the unit first came out a few years ago, I was very excited but quickly disappointed. There were many bugs and limitations that rendered the unit only moderately useful. Since the 3.0 firmware, I have been very impressed with the features, functionality and stability of these appliances.
They have become a great remote access tool, especially for a heterogeneous client base. And the Java-based front-end for fileshares and FTP sites is a HUGE improvement. And the VPN client is one of the simplest I've ever seen for a client who really only wants to connect to one office.
I like it
- Pros: Very easy for client computers to get setup and using the VPN solution. Ties into my Active Directory server so I don't need to maintain users in another location other than AD. When bringing my laptop to a remote location where the connection was behind a very restrictive firewall, I was still able to connect where as IPsec was blocked.
- Cons: The instruction manual was ok. I thought it could explain things a little bit clearer. Such as setting up routes and what ports should be plugged into. You also only get about 3 months of free updates to the firmware before you have to pay. I thought that was pretty lame. The good news is this product has been out over a year now from the time I bought it so it's pretty mature.
- Other Thoughts: The firmware that came with it (2.5) was older and needed to be updated right off the bat. Was not hard to update. Make sure you have a laptop handy to configure the VPN device in the begining.
