3 out of 5 eggsDifficult at First, Reliable Later

Pros: Reliable, Secure and actual VWLAN (ability to create multiple VLANS on different subnets) support. Nice little affordable wireless router for a small business. More affordable than the TZ 200, but pretty much the same features.

Cons: Difficult Initial Setup (Maybe because firmware update was needed)

Other Thoughts: This device was very complicated to get the wireless working correctly, but after a firmware update, the wireless was working correctly.

1 out of 5 eggsGood firewall TERRIBLE wireless

Pros: If you are familiar with Sonicwall's this will seem like a bigger device, has the "enhanced" firmware.
Firewall and network features are great. They've done a good job.

Cons: Documentation on the more complex features is totally lacking, support folks are present but hard to get an answer.
Wireless support is terrible. I finally disabled the wireless and added a cisco 4410N on my network - wireless is FLAWLESS with the cisco and performance is about 5x. I was unable to watch movies streamed from my NAS to my laptop with the TZ100W, now adding the cisco - its on-par with the wired LAN...

Other Thoughts: I upgraded to the TZ100W because it was cheaper than the firmware upgrade on my tz170.

I am tired of Sonicwall nickle and dime-ing on their licensing and I will be designing them out of future networks.

Support not worth paying for.

Sonic point and multiple ways to configure are confusing. Object orientation is a good start - but poorly documented.

Need more how-to's

3 out of 5 eggsGood General Purpose, VoIP beware

Pros: Good general purpose firewall for home, home office and branch office. VPN is to spec and easy to set up. Establishing IPSec VPNs to Cisco ASA and other VPN devices works as expected. SSL VPN is as easy as setting up a user and logging into the device and downloading one program. This device generates very little heat and is easily managed through the integrated Web Management Interface.

Cons: Asterisk based VoIP users beware - this device can be hell on a VoIP system. Sometimes it works seamlessly and flawlessly - other times, with the exact same configuration it just stops receiving SIP packets - or at least doesn't recognize them as such - even in packet capture. We've removed all SonicWall TZ products from our client offices that use Asterisk based VoIP (SwitchVox, trixbox, Fonality, etc..) until such time as SonicWall figures it out. If you're not using VoIP - this device is great - if you're using VoIP - save yourself a severe migraine and get an ASA 5505.

Other Thoughts: You can get these with integrated wireless and upgrading licenses is as easy as logging into your account page on and adding new licenses.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Firewall

Pros: This is by far the best firewall I have ever owned has tons of security features Wireless works great if you know how to set it up. (If you are having problems try updating the firmware and disabling Group Key Update under wireless security)

Cons: N/A

Other Thoughts: I bought this firewall as an open box it was already registered to someone else and the password didn't work had to call Sonicwall to have the registration moved and go into safe mode to update firmware & Load factory Defaults

5 out of 5 eggsTZ 100 Wireless N

Pros: Rock solid firewall with great features when you buy it with the TotalSecure features. I added ViewPoint (v5.1 as I couldn't get 6 to load properly and tech support was lame on the point) to one of our systems to have a graphical view of what folks in our household are doing in relationship to websites, content and bandwidth all in graphical format and we use the content filtering feature to block objectionable sites in our home (OK, I know the kids just go to their friends' house, but at least it is not under my roof)!

Cons: The wireless was pathetic out of the box. I was sitting next to the unit getting only 46% signal according to the SonicWall interface and a throughput of 1mb. According to speed tests to the Internet I was actually running at .10mbps down. Rediculous! However, after running the firmware update to bring the unit to the latest rev., the wireless works great for us with good range and decent throughput.

1 out of 5 eggsWIRELESS IS GARBAGE

Pros: The basic LAN WAN functions are as good as the TZ180 or the PRO line.

Cons: WIRELESS IS VERY BAD! I have 23 of these at remote home offices running VPN tunnels back to a NSA2400. All but two sits I have had to disable the wireless and use a 3rd party AP same as the other reviewer. Very bad through-put, frequent drops, missed assocations, very poor range

Other Thoughts: I was a sonicwall fan through and though until this new TZ100/200 series came out. They really dropped the ball on this.

I smell recall!

In the mean time if you want an all in one WLAN/LAN look on e---bay for a TZ 170/180

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well enough

Pros: Solid device, low cost, lots of features.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: We've been testing a bunch of these out in the field. We haven't seen any issues with the wireless that everyone else is claiming they're seeing--admittedly we're only using G and not N, however. At least, we're not seeing issues that wouldn't be related to wireless problems you'd see in any other product (dead zones, walls/wiring in the way of the signal)

Was looking at purchasing one for my home network

3 out of 5 eggsFantastic firewall with stinky wireless performance

Pros: Rock solid firewall performance, wonderful SSL VPN features, multiple dhcp scopes, multiple subnets, multiple LAN zones, bridging features.

Cons: Wireless is a joke. Lockups, poor performance, resets, etc, are the norm. There are NO gigabit ports on this box, the other reviewer is mistaken. All LAN/WAN interfaces on the box are 10/100.

Other Thoughts: I purchased one of these to replace an aging Linksys firewall and 802.11G access point for my wife's network. Unfortunately had nothing but issues with wireless performance. I worked directly with one of the product managers at Sonicwall to test new firmware which only made things worse. Ultimately I turned off the wireless in this thing and put the "G" access point back in. The rest of the unit performance is excellent and I love the SSL VPN. Unfortunately they need to hire some competent people to get their wireless product to perform adequately.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Firewall - Bad Wireless

Pros: -Fast
-SSL VPN and IPSec VPN works like magic!!!
-Easy to Configure
-Gig WAN
-Highly customizable
-Wizard driven for common tasks.
-Full feature web interface

Cons: Summary: Disappointing at best but frustrating most often.

I work as a network administrator and manage 53 sonicwalls. I can without a dough inform you the wireless on this device is second rate at best. It has issues with authentication, reliability and speed. I ended up just disabling the wireless radio and using Netgear Business AP's to cover that territory. Do yourself the favor, get the model without wireless and purchase a BUSINESS class Netgear or dlink access point. I had the same experience with the TZ210 wireless.

Other Thoughts: Sonicwall really needs to invest in improving the performance of the wireless in there new TZ series. Disappointing at best but frustrating most often.

They make amazing firewalls but the wireless engineers need a kick in the you know what. I can not recommend any of there new TZ WIRELESS products from my experience. Get the wired version and get an AP form someone else.

2 out of 5 eggsWireless Junk Firewall GREAT!

Pros: *Amazing Firewall
*VPN works flawlessly
*Faster and cheaper than the Cisco ASA 5505

Cons: The Wireless STINKS! I bought this so that i wouldn't have two boxes sitting in the rack reducing my failure points, but that didn't work. I have used Sonicwalls for years and took a blind leap of faith based on my experience with them as firewalls. That was a HUGE mistake! I couldn't get any devices (about 7 in total ranging from iphones to laptops and workstations) to connect no matter what settings we (me and Sonicwall support) tried. After looking on their forums, which are filled with bad reports for ALL wireless devices from them, i figured out that taking OFF the antennas actually helps. I still cant get 300 Mbps (107 Mbps MAX) and the range now goes NOWHERE! I am very disappointed in this product and gave it a gracious 2 because of the firewall features!
