5 out of 5 eggsgreat little access point

Pros: Easily configured and we've had no problems stacking 15+ users each on these in a conference room setting. Having a Sonicwall router will help with management if you have multiple Sonicpoints but IS NOT NECESSARY. Each unit has a standalone mode where it is configured in the same manner as any other WAP with an web based interface. The included PoE injector opens up the installation options since we only need to run an ethernet cable to where the access point will reside.

Cons: None so far that I can't just blame on overcrowding of the 2.4gHz space.

Other Thoughts: Contrary to other reviews this unit does work as a standalone unit without the need for a Sonicwall router to manage it. This fact is well documented in the instructions and if you google 'sonicpoint standalone mode'. Someone else mentioned that this unit doesn't support 2.4 and 5gHz simultaneously but that is why it is called dual-band and not dual-radio. There are more expensive, appropriately labeled, dual-radio access points if you need to run 2.4 and 5gHz off of one unit.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor Wireless Connectivity

Pros: PoE and mounting. Color is appealing in a commercial or residential setting. Unlikc the black or blue devices this unit blends in with the decor.

Cons: Wireless connectivity drops out regularly. Transfer speed is terrible. Unit performance is worse than a $40 Linksys unit. I have spent about 100 hours on the phone with SonicWall tech support L1, L2 and L3 and they all have acknowledged that this device is their most picky and troublesome product they sell. I worked with an escalation engineer who knows the product well and he even commented on how a significant amount of support calls is related to the SonicPoints. After 5 months we have decided to pull the unit and go with a Linksys unit which solved our problems immediately.

4 out of 5 eggsGood ...but

Pros: Very low cost and lots of options found in 500.00+ APs. Works as stated and does the job.

Cons: Need a Sonicwall device to configure (low end model is 200.00+ and only configures one and operates with one). They do state this but people easily forget that in this level of networking everything will have a separate controller device (usually several hundred dollars). No dual radio at the same time (2.4 and 5GHz). Have to choose one but Sonicwall does make a NDR model that supports both (400.00+).

Other Thoughts: People this entering the "enterprise" area. Do you research and you will be fine. You will need at least a TZ100 or higher to configure and run this device. That's okay as it also usually will double as your router. With Cisco and other folks...the controller only works as a controller....no router and they are 600.00+ usually. Sonicwall is by far the least expensive option for Small Companies looking for a stable and no fuss installation of wireless access points.

2 out of 5 eggsWarning - Can't configure by itself

Pros: Lots of nice features/security

Cons: Must have another Sonicwall device to configure these! Be warned! That is not readily evident when reading the description of this device. You will NOT be able to configure this unit by itself. It will cost you another $500-1000 for a unit that manages these.

Other Thoughts: Would've been nice if they explained the need for a management device better. It mentions you can centrally control/configure these, but they forget to mention you MUST centrally configure these. There's no way to configure this item by itself.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great!

Pros: Easy to deploy and manage through SonicWall. Feature rich and good monitoring and reporting.

Cons: Would be nice to be able to use without Sonicwall.

Other Thoughts: Deployed 18 in medium office. They are dual band and we have both secured and open guest access. Being able to create zones and filter traffic as well as scan traffic with UTM device is great. Created policy and deployed in less than an hour.

1 out of 5 eggsDoes not include POE Injector

Pros: Can set single Blue LED so no annoying flashing lights

Cons: Does not include POE Injector
You can't have simultaneous dual-band. You have to pick one frequency and that's all you get.
