TZ Series Unified Threat Management Firewall

Security and performance. Hand in hand.
One of the most secure, sophisticated and widely deployed small business firewall platform on the market today. The TZ Series offers a range Unified Threat Management solutions for small businesses, retail, government, remote sites and branch offices.

Comprehensive security.

The Dell SonicWALL TZ Series advances UTM protection by combining intrusion prevention, gateway anti-virus, anti-spyware, content/url filtering, enforced client anti-virus, and anti-spam services. Additionally, the Dell SonicWALL application intelligence and control feature in the TZ 215 ensures that bandwidth is available for business-critical applications while throttling or blocking unproductive applications. The TZ 215 also offers advanced application traffic analytics and reporting for deep insight into bandwidth utilization and security threats.

Higher performance protection.

Many consumer-grade solutions lack the processing power and security sophistication to scan traffic for all threats without slowing down the network. Unlike these consumer solutions, the TZ Series utilizes patented Dell SonicWALL Reassembly-Free Deep Packet Inspection® (DPI) technology to examine traffic simultaneously across all ports without introducing latency to the network. As a result, organizations are not required to make a choice between advanced DPI security and network performance. With the TZ Series, they can have both.

Flexible remote access.

The TZ Series includes additional advanced networking features such as IPSec and SSL VPN. The TZ Series is the only available UTM firewall that provides native VPN remote access client for Apple® iOS, Google® Android™, Windows, Mac OS and Linux. This unique client also supports Clean VPN™, which decontaminates threats from VPN traffic. Providing the most secure support for mobile platforms, only Dell SonicWALL delivers full malware scanning of SSL encrypted traffic and application control for Android and iOS devices.

Secure wireless connectivity.

The TZ Series also provides Clean Wireless, combining UTM with high-speed 802.11n wireless to encrypt traffic while also ensuring the integrity of all traffic passing through. In addition, the TZ Series offers an option for 3G2 wireless WAN and analog modem connectivity for use as the primary or failover connection.

Breakthrough simplicity.

Easy to understand and easy to use, The TZ firewall solution is built upon the industry's most advanced object-based management operating system—SonicOS. Thanks to this intuitive interface, you don't have to sacrifice ease of use for power. Now, distributed enterprises and SMBs can experience enterprise-class high-performance protection at a lower total cost of ownership.

SonicWALL TotalSecure.™

Every TZ Series appliance is also available as a Dell SonicWALL TotalSecure solution, a convenient and affordable solution that combines the hardware and all the services needed for comprehensive network protection from a wide range of network threats—including viruses, spyware, worms, Trojans, keyloggers and more.

TZ 205

The TZ 205 delivers uncompromising protection and performance for small businesses, retail deployments, distributed enterprises, remote sites and branch offices.

5 out of 5 eggsNot for wannabe-IT people

Pros: Excellent firewall providing unified threat management. Highly reliable and easy to set up and maintain. Fantastic price-point and good routing features built-in.

Cons: None. Works as advertised and then some.

Other Thoughts: IF you find this device difficult to use and you are calling yourself a network administrator (like Joey G.) you need to change careers. This is about as easy as it gets in the real world. There are unfortunately a LOT of people who are barely qualified to call themselves PC repair technicians giving themselves the title of network administrator or network engineer. Any REAL net admin will have no issues what so ever setting this up.

Lastly, you will need various subscription services to enable all of the features on this firewall. I recommend a TotalSecure subscription so you can get the support if you new to these products.

5 out of 5 eggsBest in class

Pros: This appliance is incredibly powerful and customizable. I have five of these installed with a vpn in a star configuration. The vpn has never failed and I'm approaching one year of up-time across all devices.

One is installed in a very large house with multiple external wifi antennas. It works extremely well and there are no issue with devices swapping over to different hotspots. It's all seamless.

While the learning curve is very high, I have not needed to adjust a single thing since I finished all the configurations. The only ongoing task is adding mac addresses to the white list for wifi access.

The logs are comprehensive and you will be shocked at how much malignant traffic this thing stops.

Cons: The learning curve is very high, even if you have a good networking background. The good news is that there are no command lines to fiddle with. The gui is well organized. There is however a hidden, advanced control panel that controls some very obscure options. I've only had to use it once.

Other Thoughts: If you're considering making the switch to SW and the learning curve has you scared, you might consider buying a TZ100 to learn with. They're a lot cheaper and you won't feel so bad if you decide it's above your skill level.

I would not consider this appliance if you're playing a lot of games online. Port forwarding and nat traversal issues can be a pain to figure out.

And lastly, if you don't know the difference between a port and an ip, this appliance is not for you. Only consider this appliance if you have someone to help you with the configuration and they have ample time to learn the system. If you're going to pay someone to configure it, make sure they have some experience with SW.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Firewall

Pros: Great firewall for the 300-800 dollar range. Love the new load balancing and failover response. On the tz200 it would take some 5 mintues for clients to see the switch. Now it's within 1 min. Even Windows XP machines see the change within one min (for failover).

VLAN and VOIP tagging is great. Helps out in a pinch and really does help "non" managed switches.

If you know how to "Sonicwall" then this is a slight improvement over the tz 200.

Cons: Some people like McFarley (a reviewer here) don't understand how this works. Yes this takes knowledge to get working in a "complicated" environment. However it does have Wizards. If you can't figure a wizard out then you are not a network administrator and not even in the least should you be touching this device. Self given titles like this ruin the credibility of our IT industry workers.

Support is sometimes Asia based. While they know their products their thick accents can be barriers to having a conversation and repeating oneself is very annoying. 2 Stars taken off for such support at certain times of the day. Charge 220.00 a year for support *8x5,24/7) and get US based all the time.

Other Thoughts: They seem to be licensing every aspect of this router. They are for items that take maintenance from Sonicwall's team. My only problem is that not enough people subscribe to fund their operations to the standard of say other A/V vendors.

1 out of 5 eggsDo Not BUY Sonicwall Devices

Pros: The Device works.

Cons: You Don't get any Support when you buy a Sonicwall Device.
You have to Buy Tech Support Even if your device is brand new.

Other Thoughts: Find a Different brand.

5 out of 5 eggslove sonicwall

Pros: I have been working with Sonicwall firewalls for years and I love them. You get all the functionality of Cisco products without the "attend $20,000 worth of classes to do it" problem. Tech support is awesome as well. Yes, for complicated things like forward ports, multiple WAN connections, you'll need help, but I have yet to post something to the support group and not get an answer within 12 hours.

Cons: Make sure you buy it for the size you really need... don't skimp! I tried to use a TZ 210 once (before I knew better) to run a 100+ room hotel... it would do it, but not with intrusion prevention and antivirus scanning turned on...

4 out of 5 eggssonicwall admin guy

Pros: - nearly total protection. Make sure you subscribe to intrusion prevention, content filer and anti-virus services at firewall. It's not cheap. If you're not familiar with true firewalls, TCP/IP and ports, but are more familiar with firewall/routers from consumer stores, you'll need to hire an expert to manage this unit. If you want detailed reporting on websites visited you need to install software on a server to see that. This unit gives you powerful protection from threats you never imagined existed, including the ability to detect malware on your internal machines, stuff your anti-virus anti-malware isn't catching. Combined with Avast endpoint for business on workstations, you will have very comprehensive protection from threats. Consider adding Umbrella from OpenDNS to further protect against malware. Excellent live support! Of course, it does true Internet routing as well as having provider failover capability and DMZ. Blocks active-x, java and cookies at the firewall. Reporting system available lets you see all user activity.

Cons: - You pay for what you get
- The system can increase in price as you license the above capabilities, but you are getting a level of protection, control and information that simply is not available from off the shelf consumer devices that cost in the $100 or less range.

Other Thoughts: - excellent user interface
- wish the could just get it to $999 for three years with ALL protection enable AND the hardware, included.

1 out of 5 eggsDesigned by IT people to keep IT people employed

Pros: I have nothing good to say about this thing... maybe it looks kinda cool? Like some kind of Rebel scanning droid on Hoth?

Cons: Complicated and difficult to understand. This UI is NOT easy to configure at all. If you are an IT guy, you will love it as it will continue to make you feel smarter than everyone else and boost your ego. For us network administrators that just want something that is somewhat easy to setup and turn services on or off, this thing is a nightmare.
