The Dell SonicWALL TZ Series is the most secure Unified Threat Management (UTM) firewall for small businesses, retail deployments, remote sites, branch offices and distributed enterprises. Unlike consumer-grade products, the TZ Series delivers the most effective anti-malware, intrusion prevention, content/URL filtering and application control capabilities along with the broadest most secure mobile platform support for laptops, smartphones and tablets. It provides full deep packet inspection (DPI) at very high performance levels, eliminating the network bottleneck that other products introduce, and enabling organizations to realize increased productivity gains. The TZ Series is the most secure, sophisticated and widely-deployed security platform on the market today.

Small businesses, retail deployments, government organizations, remote sites and branch offices can benefit from the powerful security and business-class performance of the new Dell SonicWALL TZ 205. Unlike consumer grade products, this powerful Unified Threat Management (UTM) firewall combines the most effective intrusion prevention, anti-malware and content/URL filtering with the broadest, most secure mobile platform support for laptops, smartphones and tablets. By providing full deep packet inspection (DPI) at very high performance levels, it eliminates the tradeoff between comprehensive security and performance.

Intrusion Prevention (Requires the Gateway Anti-Malware, Intrusion Prevention and Application Control Service)

Signature-based scanning:  Tightly integrated, signature-based intrusion prevention scans packet payloads for vulnerabilities and exploits that target critical internal systems.

Automatic signature updates:  Dell SonicWALL's Research Team continuously updates and deploys an extensive list of over 5,400 IPS signatures covering 52 attack categories. These signatures take immediate effect and do not require reboots or any other interruption in service.

Outbound threat prevention:  The ability to inspect both inbound and outbound traffic ensures that the network will not unwittingly be used in Distributed Denial of Service attacks and will prevent any Command and Control Botnet communication.

Intra-zone IPS protection:  Intrusion prevention can be deployed between internal security zones to protect sensitive servers and to prevent internal attacks.

IPSec VPN for site-to-site connectivity:  High-performance IPSec VPN allows the firewall to connect remote branch offices to a central location.

SSL VPN or IPSec client remote access:  Utilize clientless SSL VPN technology or an easy-to-manage IPSec client for easy access to email, files, computers, intranet sites and applications from a variety of platforms.

Redundant VPN gateway:  When using multiple WANs, a primary and secondary VPN can be configured to allow seamless automatic failover and failback of all VPN sessions.

Route-based VPN:  The ability to perform dynamic routing over VPN links ensures continuous uptime in the event of a temporary VPN tunnel failure by seamlessly re-routing traffic between endpoints through alternate routes.

Clean VPN:  Dell SonicWALL Clean VPN™ both secures the integrity of VPN access and decontaminates malicious threats before they can enter the corporate network.

Gateway Threat Prevention (Requires the Gateway Anti-Malware, Intrusion Prevention and Application Control Service)

Gateway anti-malware:  Dell SonicWALL's patented RFDPI engine scans all ports and protocols for viruses without file size or stream length limitation. SonicLabs Researchers constantly provide updated threat protection, providing faster response times and threat prevention.

Reassembly-Free Deep Packet (RFDPI):  Reassembly-Free Deep Packet Inspection keeps track of malware regardless of the order or inspection timing with which the packets arrive. This allows for extremely low latency while eliminating file and stream size limitations. This provides greater performance and security than outdated proxy designs which reassemble contents using sockets bolted to traditional anti-virus programs and are plagued with inefficiencies and the overhead of memory thrashing leading to high latency, low performance and size limitations.

Cloud anti-virus:  Using the built-in RFDI engine, Dell SonicWALL can leverage the power of the cloud to provide the most comprehensive set of anti-malware signatures available, while minimizing latency or delay. The Dell SonicWALL Cloud Anti-Virus Service provides millions of additional malware signatures for inspection of executable files using the most up-to-date information available.

Bi-directional Inspection: RFDPI can be performed on both inbound and outbound connections to provide protection in all network traffic directions.

24x7 signature updates:  SonicLabs Research Team creates and updates signature databases that are propagated automatically to the firewalls in the field, with those signatures taking immediate effect without any reboot or service interruption required.

Firewall and Networking

Stateful packet inspection:  All network traffic is inspected, analyzed and brought into compliance with firewall access policies.

DOS attack protection:  SYN Flood protection provides defense against DOS attacks using both layer 3 SYN proxy and layer 2 SYN blacklisting technologies.

Flexible deployment:  Can be deployed in traditional NAT and Layer 2 Bridge modes.

Policy-based routing:  Create routes based on protocol to direct traffic to a preferred WAN connection with the ability to fail back to a secondary WAN in the event of an outage.

High availability:  Supports Active/Passive failover to ensure increased reliability by protecting against hardware or software faults.

WAN load balancing:  Load balance up to four WAN interfaces using Round Robin, Spillover or Percentage based methods.

WAN acceleration:  WAN Acceleration decreases latency and increases transfer speeds between remote sites for even higher network efficiency gains.

Advanced QoS: Guarantee critical communications with 802.1p and DSCP tagging and remapping of VoIP traffic on the network.

DPI of VoIP traffic: Predefined signatures detect and block VoIP specific threats.

H.323 gatekeeper and SIP proxy support: Block spam calls by requiring that all incoming calls are authorized and authenticated by H.323 gatekeeper or SIP proxy.

Management and Monitoring

Web GUI:  An intuitive web-based interface allows quick and convenient configuration in addition to management through Dell SonicWALL Global Management System (GMS), or the CLI.

SNMPSNMP:  SNMP provides the ability to protectively monitor and respond to threats and alerts.

Centralized policy management:  With Dell SonicWALL GMS, monitor, configure and report on multiple Dell SonicWALL appliances from a single intuitive interface and customize your security environment to suit your individual policies.

Application Intelligence and Control (Requires the Gateway Anti-Malware, Intrusion Prevention and Application Control Service)

Application control:  Identify and control applications or individual components of an application based on RFDPI technology instead of relying on well-known ports and protocols.

Application bandwidth management:  Allocate bandwidth to critical applications while throttling unproductive application traffic for an efficient and productive network.

Custom application identification:  Create and configure custom application identification based on traffic parameters or on patterns unique to an application in its network communications.

Application signature database:  A continuously expanding database of over 3,500 application signatures ensures that administrators are able to control the usage of all the latest applications on their network at a category or individual level.

User activity tracking:  User identification is seamlessly integrated with Microsoft Active Directory and other authentication systems enabling tracking and reporting of individual user identification.

5 out of 5 eggsNot for wannabe-IT people

Pros: Excellent firewall providing unified threat management. Highly reliable and easy to set up and maintain. Fantastic price-point and good routing features built-in.

Cons: None. Works as advertised and then some.

Other Thoughts: IF you find this device difficult to use and you are calling yourself a network administrator (like Joey G.) you need to change careers. This is about as easy as it gets in the real world. There are unfortunately a LOT of people who are barely qualified to call themselves PC repair technicians giving themselves the title of network administrator or network engineer. Any REAL net admin will have no issues what so ever setting this up.

Lastly, you will need various subscription services to enable all of the features on this firewall. I recommend a TotalSecure subscription so you can get the support if you new to these products.

5 out of 5 eggsBest in class

Pros: This appliance is incredibly powerful and customizable. I have five of these installed with a vpn in a star configuration. The vpn has never failed and I'm approaching one year of up-time across all devices.

One is installed in a very large house with multiple external wifi antennas. It works extremely well and there are no issue with devices swapping over to different hotspots. It's all seamless.

While the learning curve is very high, I have not needed to adjust a single thing since I finished all the configurations. The only ongoing task is adding mac addresses to the white list for wifi access.

The logs are comprehensive and you will be shocked at how much malignant traffic this thing stops.

Cons: The learning curve is very high, even if you have a good networking background. The good news is that there are no command lines to fiddle with. The gui is well organized. There is however a hidden, advanced control panel that controls some very obscure options. I've only had to use it once.

Other Thoughts: If you're considering making the switch to SW and the learning curve has you scared, you might consider buying a TZ100 to learn with. They're a lot cheaper and you won't feel so bad if you decide it's above your skill level.

I would not consider this appliance if you're playing a lot of games online. Port forwarding and nat traversal issues can be a pain to figure out.

And lastly, if you don't know the difference between a port and an ip, this appliance is not for you. Only consider this appliance if you have someone to help you with the configuration and they have ample time to learn the system. If you're going to pay someone to configure it, make sure they have some experience with SW.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Firewall

Pros: Great firewall for the 300-800 dollar range. Love the new load balancing and failover response. On the tz200 it would take some 5 mintues for clients to see the switch. Now it's within 1 min. Even Windows XP machines see the change within one min (for failover).

VLAN and VOIP tagging is great. Helps out in a pinch and really does help "non" managed switches.

If you know how to "Sonicwall" then this is a slight improvement over the tz 200.

Cons: Some people like McFarley (a reviewer here) don't understand how this works. Yes this takes knowledge to get working in a "complicated" environment. However it does have Wizards. If you can't figure a wizard out then you are not a network administrator and not even in the least should you be touching this device. Self given titles like this ruin the credibility of our IT industry workers.

Support is sometimes Asia based. While they know their products their thick accents can be barriers to having a conversation and repeating oneself is very annoying. 2 Stars taken off for such support at certain times of the day. Charge 220.00 a year for support *8x5,24/7) and get US based all the time.

Other Thoughts: They seem to be licensing every aspect of this router. They are for items that take maintenance from Sonicwall's team. My only problem is that not enough people subscribe to fund their operations to the standard of say other A/V vendors.

1 out of 5 eggsDo Not BUY Sonicwall Devices

Pros: The Device works.

Cons: You Don't get any Support when you buy a Sonicwall Device.
You have to Buy Tech Support Even if your device is brand new.

Other Thoughts: Find a Different brand.

5 out of 5 eggslove sonicwall

Pros: I have been working with Sonicwall firewalls for years and I love them. You get all the functionality of Cisco products without the "attend $20,000 worth of classes to do it" problem. Tech support is awesome as well. Yes, for complicated things like forward ports, multiple WAN connections, you'll need help, but I have yet to post something to the support group and not get an answer within 12 hours.

Cons: Make sure you buy it for the size you really need... don't skimp! I tried to use a TZ 210 once (before I knew better) to run a 100+ room hotel... it would do it, but not with intrusion prevention and antivirus scanning turned on...

4 out of 5 eggssonicwall admin guy

Pros: - nearly total protection. Make sure you subscribe to intrusion prevention, content filer and anti-virus services at firewall. It's not cheap. If you're not familiar with true firewalls, TCP/IP and ports, but are more familiar with firewall/routers from consumer stores, you'll need to hire an expert to manage this unit. If you want detailed reporting on websites visited you need to install software on a server to see that. This unit gives you powerful protection from threats you never imagined existed, including the ability to detect malware on your internal machines, stuff your anti-virus anti-malware isn't catching. Combined with Avast endpoint for business on workstations, you will have very comprehensive protection from threats. Consider adding Umbrella from OpenDNS to further protect against malware. Excellent live support! Of course, it does true Internet routing as well as having provider failover capability and DMZ. Blocks active-x, java and cookies at the firewall. Reporting system available lets you see all user activity.

Cons: - You pay for what you get
- The system can increase in price as you license the above capabilities, but you are getting a level of protection, control and information that simply is not available from off the shelf consumer devices that cost in the $100 or less range.

Other Thoughts: - excellent user interface
- wish the could just get it to $999 for three years with ALL protection enable AND the hardware, included.

1 out of 5 eggsDesigned by IT people to keep IT people employed

Pros: I have nothing good to say about this thing... maybe it looks kinda cool? Like some kind of Rebel scanning droid on Hoth?

Cons: Complicated and difficult to understand. This UI is NOT easy to configure at all. If you are an IT guy, you will love it as it will continue to make you feel smarter than everyone else and boost your ego. For us network administrators that just want something that is somewhat easy to setup and turn services on or off, this thing is a nightmare.
