3 out of 5 eggsSo-so SonicWall

Pros: WAN failover, 3G modem

Cons: Support

Other Thoughts: We have home-grown Linux firewalls (with OpenSWAN) that we had been using for VPN connection and decided to go with a more turnkey approach. The SonicWALLs seem to be pretty cost effective and have features that we were looking for (including WAN failover) and 3G modem capability (in addition to more standard DHCP server, SSL VPN, firewall, Dynamic DNS, etc. features).

I'd describe my experience so far (2 weeks) as "so-so". I connected it to a DSL modem and immediately had connectivity issues. I had to adjust the maximum frame size to get things to work (but it wasn't automatic or obvious). Once I got SSLVPN to work, I can't seem to find a way to administer the link over the VPN connection (reading the forums seems to indicate that this is a bug, but I created a trouble ticket and haven't heard anything in over 48 hours). I then tried their Global VPN Client, but had some serious performance issues (so bad that it must be a configuration issue), and again created a trouble ticket, but no response in 48 hours (despite paying for the support).

Their knowledge base isn't bad (I've found some useful information there), but waiting more than 48 hours for contact from their support department when you've paid for support doesn't bode well.

At this point, I'd say it does the job, but has required more work on my part than I'd like.
