This review is from: Netis WF2416 Wireless N150 Pocket Size Traveler AP Router Repeater with Wall Plug

Pros: This is a great little portable router. Woks as advertised in all modes. Great setup help on the web site and a new firmware update also dated 9/5/2014 for improved security.
Can't beat the price.

1 out of 5 eggsNetis WF2416

This review is from: Netis WF2416 Wireless N150 Pocket Size Traveler AP Router Repeater with Wall Plug

Pros: none

Cons: Wasted few hours and still can't get this thing to work. Probably got a defective item, when in the Netis setup page, nothing shows up when I clicked "AP Scan" in wifi extender mode. Wish they could provide better instructions to troubleshoot.

5 out of 5 eggsGood enough

This review is from: Netis WF2416 Wireless N150 Pocket Size Traveler AP Router Repeater with Wall Plug

Pros: Keeps a live connection to the network. Easy to configure, has a very good dashboard, works great as a repeater in WISP mode, so I can get a strong signal from the DD-DRT router & Comcast modem (with much faster download speeds) from over 60 feet away, across the hall, through a brick wall and three sheet-rock walls. It looks cool plugged into a power strip that is mounted on the wall.

Cons: None so far... I like this thing!

Other Thoughts: After you set it up and get a stable internet connection in WISP mode, leave it alone unless it starts having a problem. I do not recommend tinkering with the settings. Unless it starts messing up, leave it alone! But if you mess it up, don't blame anyone but yourself...

4 out of 5 eggsFirmware needs update!!

This review is from: Netis WF2416 Wireless N150 Pocket Size Traveler AP Router Repeater with Wall Plug

Pros: Cheap, small portable WIFI extender and access point. Behaves reasonably well for what it is, a traveling AP

Cons: Firmware has quite a few English typos, and some of the messages are in Chinese and I can only guess at what they might mean. No firmware upgrades available on the company website beyond the shipped firmware.

Manufacturer Response:

dear Sir:

thanks for purchasing netis product and really appreciate your feedback about our typos, we will have a new version of QIG release online by next Monday, please feel free to provide us your important opinions. we are looking forward to hear from you soon.

3 out of 5 eggsNetis WF2416

This review is from: Netis WF2416 Wireless N150 Pocket Size Traveler AP Router Repeater with Wall Plug

Pros: Inexpensive, nice to have a hardware switch to choose between router and extender, no cable/plugs directly into wall, easy to move.

Cons: No detailed documentation, but I found a video on YouTube that demonstrates how to use the device. couldn't use the same SSID as my main router (Netis 2419) because all devices complained about the profile not matching the SSID. After some tinkering, it now works as an extender using a different SSID but takes a long time to assign IP addresses from the main router. At times, it fails to assign the IP address for the connecting device. This is strange because my router is made by the same company and I would expect it to all work well together??

Other Thoughts: Other than the slow IP address assignment and occasional IP address assignment failure, I am satisfied. The range is just OK, nothing incredible. Since the router is so small, it's easy to move around the house when I need to bridge the distance between the main router and a laptop or other device at the far corner of the house.

Manufacturer Response:

hi, Sir:

thanks for purchasing netis product and appreciate your feedback about SSID, we will have new QIG plan to release at sep 15, 2014, please feel free to provide us future feedback. we are looking forward to hear from you shortly.

1 out of 5 eggsWF2416

This review is from: Netis WF2416 Wireless N150 Pocket Size Traveler AP Router Repeater with Wall Plug

Pros: None.

Cons: Setup requires advanced IT skills and way too much time.
Written and online instructions very poor.
After 2 hours I gave up and will bin / burn or return it.

Other Thoughts: Next time you bring a consumer product to market make sure it's for consumers.

1 out of 5 eggsShould work for travel

This review is from: Netis WF2416 Wireless N150 Pocket Size Traveler AP Router Repeater with Wall Plug

Pros: When plugged in to another router and set to router or AP mode, I was able to connect to this device easily. Changing the default SSID and password for this mode specifically was also easy.

Cons: The firmware is VERY buggy. As other reviewers have mentioned, SSIDs cannot have spaces in them. This goes for both AP mode and extender mode. I never was able to get extender mode to work correctly as I had to change the IP address of this device so that it wouldn't conflict with anything else on my network. After changing the default IP address, I could not connect to it at all and had to reset the device back to factory settings using the button on the case. Resetting to default is also a hassle. It only does so when the switch is set to router mode and even then only actually resets every so often.

Error messages are only written in Chinese, so good luck!

Other Thoughts: I only provided one egg because this router really needs a firmware upgrade to have all the features it claims to have. Hopefully the company will put one out soon.

Manufacturer Response:

3 out of 5 eggsNeeds firmware update

This review is from: Netis WF2416 Wireless N150 Pocket Size Traveler AP Router Repeater with Wall Plug

Pros: Super portable device that comes with 4 different connection modes (Router, Access Point, WISP, WiFi Extender). It was on sale for $10 when I bought it, so why not?

Cons: It doesn't allow spaces in the SSID. My existing home network router has a space in it, so I can't use it as a range extender (without reconfiguring all of my and my family's devices). Why??

The range also isn't that impressive, but then again, it's tiny, portable, and doesn't have antennae so I didn't expect too much.

Other Thoughts: Checked online to see if there was a firmware update to fix the space issue, but there is none. I guess if your network doesn't have a space in the name, you'll be fine.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes act as a wireless client for a wireless device.

This review is from: Netis WF2416 Wireless N150 Pocket Size Traveler AP Router Repeater with Wall Plug

Pros: You CAN plug in your wired Ethernet device and use this to connect to a wireless access point as a client. That is exactly how I am using one right now in my house. This is done through the WISP Operation Mode.

Not only that, but through "Virtual Servers" (a.k.a. NAT or Port Forwarding) I have punched holes back through the bridge and have successfully run both an SSH and HTTP server on the wired device connected to the Netis, which is in turn connected to my wireless network.

The WF2416 connects to my wireless router as 192.168.0.100 (using DHCP).
It then acts as a gateway for my wired device as 192.168.100.1.
My wired device is given 192.168.100.2 when I connect to the WF2416 (again, using DHCP).
But DHCP is not required; you can set everything to static IPs as well.

Cons: I'll admit, it's a little finicky to get running at first. For instance, I had to learn about WISP and that that really meant in relation to using it as a Bridge. To me, a "Bridge" is totally transparent, whereas "WISP" is a Bridge+Router. Just like a normal router, you have to punch port holes back through in order to run some services.

Other Thoughts: In case anyone else wants to use the Virtual Server in the router... My one piece of advice is that, even if you only want to open one port number, specify it as a range. For example, if you want to run an SSH server, you must specify the port range of "22-22" instead of just saying "22" and leaving the second field empty.
