5 out of 5 eggslongevity is good

Pros: Everything in my previous review still stands

Almost 18 months of 24x7 use and it's still as fast as day 1. I get the impression this switch will last me till 10gb becomes the standard.

Cons: None really, except maybe the MSRP is a bit high for what it is.

1 out of 5 eggsterrible for real-time devices like gaming and streaming

Pros: I got this to connect between my PC and nas for higher transfer speed since my PC was on a 100mbps switch built-in to my powerline adapter. It worked well until I started streaming content from that PC to another remote media extender and also hooked up my xbox360 to this gigabit switch. Both showed terrible lags until I disconnected the unit.

Cons: latency issues with real-time data

3 out of 5 eggsGood switch but there are lower priced units that perform better.

Pros: Inexpensive way to add four more ports to a network.
No setup or configuration needed, just Ethernet cables to plug it to your devices. Set it and forget it.
It automatically negotiates speed depending of the speed (10, 100, 1000) of your connected device.
Very good construction and very sturdy even though is small and very light (5 ” x 3.6” x 1.5”).
Runs cool and silent (not fans)
Could be left on a desk or mounted on the wall.
The switch is very fast when transferring small and single files (130MBps +) or browsing the Internet, but is not as fast as similar priced and lower priced units (TP-Link, Netgear, D-Link, Rosewill) when transferring large files (1GB +).
I was able to transfer 1GB (1,075,669,410 bytes) folder with mixed files in 18 seconds flat from a Windows 7 system to a Windows 8 system…and transferring a 3GB (3,228,209,949) folder took 56 seconds.
It gets interesting: Transferring the same folders above from a Windows 8 system to Windows 7 machines takes longer (23 seconds and 1 minute 8 seconds respectively). The same happened when transferring the folders between two Windows 7 systems. It did not matter that one of the Windows 7 machine had a Samsung SSD Pro.
I perform the transfer six (6) times, different cable from several ports with the same results.

Cons: There are other units with lower price tag that do perform better (TP-Link, Netgear, D-Link & Rosewill).
LEDs lights bleed through the case, which makes hard to know which LED is blinking

Other Thoughts: This is an unmanaged switch (plug and play) that simply allows Ethernet devices to communicate with one another (PC, NAS, network printer, etc). It does has a fixed configuration and do not allow any changes to it like a router would allow.
You will connect this device to a router to expand your network.
Tested with CAT 6 patch cables (up to 24' ft).
Devices connected: Desktop/ Dell E6400 laptop/HP Envy i5 Ultrabook/ D-Link NAS
All devices connected supported gigabit Ethernet.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Little Switch

Pros: First of all the switch arrived along with another item from New Egg, the boxes were placed outside my door and it had rained. The other box was wet and soaked through but On Networks shrink wraps the outside box preventing moisture damage. So A+ so far. As I opened the box I wanted to pay close attention to the box, instructions and the way it was packaged and I have to say that I was not disappointed. All items in the box were secure and felt to the touch to be good to high quality.

Set up was easy, basically plug and play. This switch uses less power than the GB switch I already owned and installed in a matter of seconds.

In order to provide the viewers with a good review on performance I decided to run speed transfer tests from host to host on my home network.

My NetGear GB switch was providing me 168 MBPS peak and the On Network Switch was giving me 152 MBPS peak. NOT bad at all for a switch that costs about 70.00 less than what I paid for the NetGear. The unit runs cool even under load and honestly does an amazing job. I would reccomend this item to a friend.

Cons: The On Networks Switch slows down when transferring data between multiple devices but one would hardly notice unless you’re running bench marks and starring at the numbers. It wasn't able to manage the packets as effectively or efficiently.

2 out of 5 eggsNot quite up to par...

Pros: + Small size means it (the switch itself, see "Cons" for more on the power adapter) will fit just about anywhere.
+ Gigabit speeds (sort of, see other thoughts).
+ Can be wall-mounted via the two slotted holes on the underside of the unit.

Cons: - Does not perform 100% consistently. Thorough testing using both synthetic benchmarks and real-world tests reveal that this unit seems to "get tired" or otherwise slow down somewhat in the middle of large data transfers (see "Other Thoughts").
- Unit locked up no less than twice during heavy network traffic with 3/5 ports occupied by devices on my network, and port 1 as the uplink.
- Power brick looks as though it is intended to only take up a single port on your power strip, but it is wide enough to where it will block BOTH adjacent plugs on your average strip.

Other Thoughts: PERFORMANCE
- Synthetic tests were performed using software that creates files on a remote host and copies random data at the highest speed possible.
- Real-world tests were performed by copying one to a few large files (DVD ISOs, etc.), as well as large folders containing hundreds to thousands of small files like documents and pictures.

Avg Read (Synthetic): 90MB/s
Avg Write (Synthetic): 81MB/s
Avg Read (Real-world): 84MB/s
Avg Write (Real-world): 76MB/s

As stated before, this switch would actually start out performing as one would expect, with speeds hovering near 100MB/s, but as time progressed during long tests (1 hour or more), this switch slowly became less capable of handling my network load. These results were validated using another gigabit switch I own; it performed the same tests with every result exceeding the 100MB/s mark (3x SSDs in RAID0 copying to another SSD to ensure disk drives were not the limiting factor).

SUMMARY
This is clearly product that belongs in the "budget home networking" category. That being said, Newegg's original price on this unit was nearly twice that of your more established competition (names ending in "Link", "Net", and etc. all spring to mind). Fortunately, the price has dropped considerably.

The fact that this unit did not perform consistently, along with the fact that I was able to make it lock up during real and synthetic heavy traffic, does not instill confidence on behalf of this unit. That being said, based on other reviews, my particular switch could have been one that should not have passed quality control. We shall see if it lasts for its full warranty period of 1 year.

Some may find it unattractive. I personally put more stock in function over form, but unfortunately this switch seems to lack both. It is small enough to fit between your desk and the wall, and that is probably where you will want to put it as it would certainly be an eyesore in plain sight in any small office/home office environment. Its construction is cheap at best, as it creaks when you pick it up and it almost sounds like there is something rattling around inside of the casing when you handle it. Whomever designed the power adapter has committed a laughable failure, as it is actually worse about conserving space than some of the brick adapters that you would normally situate at the bottom plug on the wall or power strip, effectively taking up three spaces instead of one. You *can* wedge it in next to a standard 2-prong cords, but it will not play nice with the 3-prong variety.

All in all, this is not a *terrible* unit. It is just what I would consider a very *good* one.

RECOMMENDATION
This switch belongs with the rest of the budget networking brands, and despite Newegg's attempts to make this so, this item is still priced beyond its worth.

5 out of 5 eggsNice 5 Port Switch

Pros: Competitive Price. Packaged well. No need for an indepth manual as its pretty much plug and play.

Connected my modem to my router and the switch to the router and then my laptop to the switch and was on the net without issues. I was able to stream very smoothly with out any issues. Added 2 printers to the switch and windows picked them up with out issue moving them from the router to the switch.

It's a very straight forward device. Works well

Cons: No cons. Does what its supposed to do

Other Thoughts: If you need an inexpensive switch to extend your network this is the way to go. No questions asked.
