5 out of 5 eggsRock solid router

Pros: Let me preface this by saying I bought this strictly to run the Tomato firmware. I have no experience using the pre-installed default firmware.

That out of the way, compared to my Linksys E3200 similarly running Tomato, is just incredibly rock solid. It just works. Not much configuration, not a lot of rebooting.

Cons: Was a much better value when first released.

1 out of 5 eggsFactory warranty service 3 months & counting

Pros: I tried using the factory's latest firmware. Tested it for 3 months.

Cons: After 3 months, I returned it to the factory for RMA replacement, as requested. I was told that the next batch due in was a 60 days away. They must have forgotten me because now I am being told that the next order due in is another 45 days. Started the RMA process in the clear beginning of June.

2 out of 5 eggsDeceptive router

Pros: Low price point (purchased for 80) when on sale.
Dual band
You can install Tomato on it.
USB Ports

Cons: I have google fiber in my home and purchased this router hoping it would be able to keep up. My requirements were gigabit lan and wan ports and wireless AC. This fit all those requirements, but this router performs very poorly.
The built in firmware is HORRIBLE so make sure you upgrade do decide to do it. You have to use the Asus 66r firmware package in order to do it.
I hooked everything up completely stock and configured it and did a wired network and wireless network test on all my computers......horrible performance. Direct to my fiber modem I receive 950mbps up and 950mbps down on my computers with solid state drives and 500ish with hard drives. Going through this router I receive 150 down and 200 up.....not the performance that I expected.
Wireless connected to either band results in 100mbps down and 80 up.
I have not had a chance to hook up another router with gigabit wan due to cost but as soon as I do I will compare the wired speeds with another brand and update.

Other Thoughts: Overall this router will be fine for the user who doesnt mind flashing the firmware and who has internet speeds under 100mbps, but if you are in an area that offers fiber speeds or otherwise higher than 100 I would recommend looking at a different brand to avoid a bottleneck in your network.
I ended up using this as a wireless AP and using my modem for everything else since it does a sufficient job and has the features I need right now. The modem only has wireless n300 so this is a better option as far as that goes.

5 out of 5 eggs3 months field test

Pros: Running now for almost three months flawlessly. At the very beginning I immediately flashed Shibby's Tomato firmware which is super stable with lots of nice features. Range is great but had no chance to test AC due to a lack of clients.

Thought the router had an issue lately since I couldn't connect to it wirelessly anymore. Found out this was not a router issue at all but a problem with Canon's EOS Utility that flooded my network.

Highest priority in a router for me is reliability which so far is the case. Second is good throughput and availability of freely available firmware.

Cons: None, not even the fact that the case is white ;-)

Other Thoughts: I bought this during the end of February shell shocker deal for not even eighty. Excellent deal. Current price of two and half of this is ridiculously high and I would never pay that.

5 out of 5 eggsTomatoUSB Compatible

Pros: Compatible with TomatoUSB: This means you get rock solid firmware on a proven hardware platform. Wireless speeds are great - streamed encoded HD video content to 4 wireless devices simultaneously without a hiccup. No drops after weeks of use. I found this on sale for under $100 - not here (although I love newegg)

Cons: Original firmware may not be very good. Reports of problems after OEM firmware upgrades. Unit runs warm. OEM firmware is junk.

Other Thoughts: I replaced a D-**** N600 cloud router after 2 months because it was constantly dropping wireless clients. Finally did some homework looking for tomato compatible routers after my overwhelming success with a previous wirless G Tomato compatible router. That never dropped a connection using it for 7 years... After you buy this router (you should), use the factory html interface to upgrade the router to a compatible TomatoUSB firmware. Set it, then forget it.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: Good price during shell shocker, less than 1/2 of what Asus AC66RT would cost.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Flashed with shibby Tomato as soon as I got it, been running awesome, bandwidth increases 2.5-3 times over my old DLink-655 300N router when copying large files over wireless using the same N adapters, signal is generally stronger too, pretty heavy like other AC routers so that's a plus.

5 out of 5 eggsexcellent router

Pros: ease of setup; tools easy to work with; range on 5G is excellent; speed on 5G is totally awesome

Cons: unable to change time from Beijing time zone.

Other Thoughts: when a 3 year old Netgear N-600 adapter gets 850 mb/s speed, on 5 Ghz band, i'm definitely impressed. Haven't tried to flash BIOS because it's working too well straight out of the box.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Hi-End, only 2 bugs

Pros: Very Fast, Good Features, Firmware Updates to keep improving (remember to unzip before trying to flash), support direct from Factory via Skype IM at all hours. ..

Cons: Firmware is a little complicated to setup and be sure you have the best options set. Wireless (only) connected device cannot communicate to another Wireless (only) connected device. Example: Samsung Note 2 can no longer print to the Brother Wireless Printer using the Brother App. Both are connected to the Router. (Tech Support is working on it). And Last, Antennas keep falling over, (Yes, I would also have liked Black, Better! )

Other Thoughts: I have several AMD ITX Motherboards that come with Wireless AC on-board. Now I need to figure out how to get both 2.4 & 5.0 to connect, at the same time

5 out of 5 eggsgood stuff

Pros: broadcom chipset @ 600mhz
adequate flash ram (16mb)
supports dd-wrt and tomato (shibby)
has a giant heatsink and good ventilation
zero stability issues with tomato
4 bars @ 225ft on 2.4, @125ft on 5ghz

Cons: could maybe build up heat if you don't turn it upside down.

Other Thoughts: has same chipset as AC66U, but less flash (16 vs 32). No problem though, since all of the desirable firmwares in the 3rd party category are right at 8mb. Shibby has a version specifically for this router that has all the goodies - VPN, QoS,DLNA support, etc.

Because the heatsink is on the bottom of this unit, and all the ventilation is also on the bottom, I think it is a no-brainer to flip it upside down. I could maybe complain that it is a design flaw, but maybe it wouldn't ever overheat if right side up. I'll never know, though.

Its range is at the top of all routers I've installed and tested. I'll probably dial it in to keep the signal limited to my property, but at the moment I can cross the street and get 4 bars steady even at 5ghz.

5 out of 5 eggsRock Solid So Far...

Pros: AC wireless, guest network and the ability to segregated the wireless networks from the rest each other. You mostly see this in higher end routers. Easy straight forward setup. Had the device setup in like 15 minutes or less. I then updated the firmware which wiped all the settings. Flip side took less then 5 minutes to reset all my settings as they were saved in browser cash. Other Plus 2 USB 2.0 ports great for a printer and hard drive... Haven't tried that yet but as soon as i do i will update the review. Also this router has been up a week solid no reset.

Cons: Tenda's website was more difficult to navigate than it the routers interface(It's horrible in other words) As others have said setting the time zone on the device is horrible. The page is consistently refreshing every few seconds causing the settings to be set back to the default settings.(No fix for this with update btw so set it fast and save those settings before the page refreshes) Once its save it doesn't go back to default but still a little annoying to set that zone.

Other Thoughts: Great Deal on the router as it was on a daily special so I got it at a fraction of the regular price. If I would have had to pay full price would have considered a Asus or Netgear Nighthawk.
