3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Decent USB connector, does what it has to.

Cons: Doesn't always get detected on start up. I find myself unplugging it and plugging it back in. Not always fun.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

Thank you for taking the time to check out and try our adapter.

One suggestion is to try to reload or update the driver.

You can find the driver on our website at: http://www.tp-link.us/support/download/?model=TL-WN821N&version=

It is best to only use Windows to configure this device and not use any 3rd party applications. You can even disable the TP-Link configuration that comes on the CD as this can impact and affect the Windows configuration.

If you have any issues or concerns then feel free to contact me directly at howard.he@tp-link.com.

Best Regards!

1 out of 5 eggsBeware V4 Chipset

Pros: Cheap.

Cons: Bought this at another store thinking it was an Atheros chipset. Turns out version 4 switched to a cheap Realtek RTL8192CU chipset. The speed is unacceptably slow 3.94 Mbits/sec on Linux kernel 3.12 measured with iperf. Binary drivers are not a solution for Linux. Look elsewhere and get an adapter with a good radio.

Other Thoughts: I wish there were some way to know the version and chipset of wireless adapters before purchasing. It's very frustrating and time wasting to expect a certain radio and get junk.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

Thank you for checking out our product.

We are sorry to see that this device hasn't worked out for you.

You are correct that we have changed the chipset to Realtek.

A good site for checking out the chipset of hardware may be the Wiki Devi site.

5 out of 5 eggsPlug and Play WIndows 8 But....

Pros: Plug and Play Windows 8. For about $20 bucks on sale, what's not to like?

Cons: But.... Windows 8 installed wrong driver. Even with wrong driver, the wireless adaptor it still worked perfectly! As a perfectionist, this didn't sit well with me so I did go to TP Link website to download installation utility to install latest driver.

Other Thoughts: Make sure Windows 8 installs the correct driver. If not, go to TP Link website to download latest installation utility.

1 out of 5 eggsswitched chipset

Pros: Nothing.

Cons: I specifically ordered this to get a Atheros chipset. TP-Link has switched to the awful Realtek 8192cu. Stay away. My box says v4.2. This chipset is currently terrible under linux.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,
We apologize TP-LINK doesn't provide official Linux driver for the adapter.
If you wish, you may try the Linux from the Chip vendor.
Here's the download link:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PFid=48&Level=5&Conn=4&ProdID=277&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false&Downloads=true

If you still want to use Atheros chip wireless adapter, I suggest you choose TL-WN721N or TL-WN722N.

5 out of 5 eggsOh my gosh

Pros: Wide but slim, doesnt interfere with USB ports around it on the back of mobo.

Speed is fantasically better than any cards in any of the (budget) laptops around me house.

got it for $10 on sale.

Doesnt use annoying extra software to connect, uses windows built in system.

Cons: It doesnt run crisis.
It doesnt make me money.
It doesnt cook waffles.

Other Thoughts: I got an old PC from a bro in need of a new motherboard. He took his old netgear PCI card out if it, so i needed a new wireless card, and i picked this up on sale around black friday for $10 dollars. Comes with a extension cable (which if you aren't in need of one, can be used to extend an iphone charger or something of that sort, presumably) and a driver disk. I noticed many others having problems with installation, but i had none. I might recommend ditching the included driver CD and downloading them from another PC from the TP-link website. Thats what i did.

My internet speed is advertised as 8i think 12 megabits per second?

Anyway with my laptop (an acer laptop with 6GB of ram and an A6-3400m) i get download speeds ranging from 300 KBPS to 800 KBPS, usually hanging around 4 to 5 hundred. Other laptops brought into my house and the netgear USB adapter on another desktop get similar speeds. However, this on my desktop gives a STEADY 1.2 MEGABYTES PER SECOND, sometimes ranging up to 1.5.

I bought this with the expectation that it would be a simple replacement for most other wifi adapters/cards, but it exceeds my expectations. If you could get past problems others are having (perhaps try DLing from website) for any price this is a FANTASTIC deal, better then a 1-2 year old $50 netgear USB adapter, for less than half the price.

1 out of 5 eggsImpressivly Worthless

Pros: Newegg

Cons: I cannot get this device to work on any of my Windows 7 machines 32 or 64 bit. I purchased two of these devices. One for a Windows 7 machine and the second for my WDTV Live Plus. They didn't work for either situation. I don't know how TP-Link expects any novice computer to get this thing working, but I couldn't.

Other Thoughts: Do not use the disc that came with this device (on second thought, don't buy this device). If you have mistakenly already bought one, try the drivers on the website first. It seems as though some other people have gotten the online drivers to work for them. I used the disc first and it crashed my graphics driver.

1 out of 5 eggsNo-go for Windows 8

Pros: Cheap. Small.

Cons: The v3 drivers can't be installed in Windows 8 consumer preview or windows 7 compatibility mode. I've not been able to use this device.

Using generic atheros drivers seem to be a dead end too.

The QSS utility causes Windows 8 to no longer start up. Instead it ends up in a restart loop with an IRQL error. System restore is required to get things back to working order.

Other Thoughts: Will update if/when TP-Link responds to the support ticket I've opened.

Pretty sure I'll end up losing the USB cap at some point.
