5 out of 5 eggsFirst Try at a New Brand

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND Ultimate Wireless N300 Router, Gigabit, 300Mbps, USB port, 3 Detachable Antennas / IP QoS/ QSS Button

Pros: Picked this out, as my residence has all-concrete walls, and many recommended Wireless-N to me. Works FAR better than Wireless-G so far.

It's got wired Ethernet, wireless Ethernet, USB device hookup, and neat buttons on the back (power off wireless, power off entire unit, and wireless security easy setup (for devices it works with)

The whole unit has mounting holes underneath it, so it can go on screws if you'd like.

Additionally, the web interface has tons of options. More options than I've seen from 2000-era D-Link and Linksys routers. Since I'm not a networking guru, I honestly don't even know what some of them do. But if I needed it, well, that feature is there.

Additionally, might I add that although the device is wide (after all, there are three antennas) it is rather slim and good looking in shiny black.

Cons: TP-Link, as far as I know, is a relatively new player to the US market. So you might be wary of them (I was at first until I researched their products). This product so far has had great quality, great packaging, and great materials they include in the box.

Other Thoughts: I will be sure to update this review after I've had the unit longer. From my experience, modems and routers should last YEARS, easily. So if this one doesn't, you'll know from me :)

2 out of 5 eggs2nd review

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND Ultimate Wireless N300 Router, Gigabit, 300Mbps, USB port, 3 Detachable Antennas / IP QoS/ QSS Button

Pros: Great Range and connectivity on wireless side, Gigabit Lan ports, Very fast!
Worked for a while and will still work if you don,t have power failure

Cons: Live in rural area with fairly frequent power failures(once a week)
Unable to change ip address of router permantly. Will not retain ip address after power failure, goes by to default setting. Also static ip addresses added disappear. Should have cmos battery inside may be dead!!! Probable will void warranty replacing!!!

5 out of 5 eggsworks pretty good

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND Ultimate Wireless N300 Router, Gigabit, 300Mbps, USB port, 3 Detachable Antennas / IP QoS/ QSS Button

Pros: I set this up at my moms a few weeks ago and it is working great, it is able o get good speeds on wifi (considering it is wireless N not AC)
It has a option to enable Wireless N 450, i can't test this as my laptop only has wireless N 300

It is DD-WRT compatible, you just have to use a beta build ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/
i have not found any reason to replace the stock firmware (which is still maintained by TP Link) aside from more DDNs providers

Gigabit LAN, given the rate our ISP's speed is growing (min speed has been doubling the past 3 or 4 years every year, at this rate gigabit will be required to fully use it by next year)

really large detachable antenna

Cons: Wireless N is not as fast as you think, unless you are close enough you should be using a wire you will get about 32Mbps over wireless N, While wireless N is rated at 300Mbps, most of it is consumed is overhead (at close range it can do about 62Mbps)

Getting it wall mounted is little tricky when it comes to antenna locations and wires
No wall-mounting screws are provided (my buffalo router came with them and so did my asus switch)

For proper cooling this thing should be wall mounted, however the layout was designed for sitting on a desk, only ventilation is on the bottom since heat rises it is best to wall mount to for cooling, keeping hardware cool will extend it's life

Other Thoughts: if you are looking for a budget router for use in today's world go for it
If you need over 30Mbps over wifi you should get a wireless AC router you will also need to be sure your other hardware has a wireless AC card (beware most laptops have a BIOS lock on the card, that will not let it boot without a approved card)
if you have several devices using your wifi at the same time you should definitely get a dual band router

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Product Line

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND Ultimate Wireless N300 Router, Gigabit, 300Mbps, USB port, 3 Detachable Antennas / IP QoS/ QSS Button

Pros: Economical N wireless router with Gigabit ethernet ports.
Only $45 compare to similar N routers with Gigabit ports for more than $100.

Cons: Setup disk is useless, will change Nat settings and default IP back to factory during setup. Manually setup worked.

Other Thoughts: TP-Link is an excellent brand. I have had over a dozen USB, low profile card, access points in last ten years all have lasted. One internal card about 7 to 8 years old set up as access point had unbelievable range.

5 out of 5 eggsDD-WRT is available

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND Ultimate Wireless N300 Router, Gigabit, 300Mbps, USB port, 3 Detachable Antennas / IP QoS/ QSS Button

Pros: Gigabyte ports - work as advertised. I never quantified the actually transfer rate, but it's excellent.
Good signal thru entire house. Albeit the house isn't that big.
DD-WRT firmware is available, I have it loaded.

Cons: Windows is slow to connect to usb storage devices. The storage transfer rates are reasonable, once windows finds it. But you'll have time to make coffee waiting for windows to find it.

Other Thoughts: I've got the older white rectangular model. I'm glad, the newer black model looks silly to me. But you don't care.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate with June 13, 2014 firmware

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND Ultimate Wireless N300 Router, Gigabit, 300Mbps, USB port, 3 Detachable Antennas / IP QoS/ QSS Button

Pros: Recent firmware update.
Strong signal.
Fast. 57 Mbps
Price.

Cons: Looks a bit cheap.

Other Thoughts: I updated to the June 13, 2014 firmware (TL-WR1043ND_V2_140613). Very straightforward.

Don't see need to flash with DD-WRT.

Manually selected channel, b/g/n, and 20 Mhz (vs. auto which didn't always select the best channel, plus I wanted 20 Mhz channel width). Used WiFi Explorer survey app from the Mac app store.

57 Mbps wirelessly via Comcast Blast+ 50 Mbps tier, with Motorola SB6141 cable modem, using various speed test.

If you don't need fancy features, 5 GHz channel, and AC, then this 2.4 GHz router is a solid buy.

I haven't tested the distance, but the WiFI Explorer app gave very good SNR comparable to my expensive 1900 AC router.

2 out of 5 eggscrashes, very low throuput

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND Ultimate Wireless N300 Router, Gigabit, 300Mbps, USB port, 3 Detachable Antennas / IP QoS/ QSS Button

Pros: able to get up to 450mbit connection when connected

Cons: low connection strength, crashes, and very low throuput for connected devices. RMA'd but loose $10 due to shipping

also the usb sharing is about useless, as throuput is extremely low (1mb/sec or so)

Other Thoughts: got a cheaper router, will just share from a computer or nas

2 out of 5 eggsConstantly loses connection

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND Ultimate Wireless N300 Router, Gigabit, 300Mbps, USB port, 3 Detachable Antennas / IP QoS/ QSS Button

Pros: The only thing impressive about this router is the web-based config page. Lots of options and nothing flashy.

Cons: Cannot handle many devices (at least I think this is the problem). Routinely I will lose connection with my laptop (Thinkpad) when another device usually a phone appears. There are about 8 devices in total that may be connected at any given time.

TP-Link support tries but, does not help. I had already tried all the tasks they had me do (change channels, power, etc.).

The only way I have been able to continue using this router has been to offload some devices to an old WRT54G connected to a LAN port on this router. Without my trusty Linksys I would have taken this thing to the street and run it over with my car!

5 out of 5 eggsThis is the one

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND Ultimate Wireless N300 Router, Gigabit, 300Mbps, USB port, 3 Detachable Antennas / IP QoS/ QSS Button

Pros: Speed, features, cost, range, ease of setup, GB router, N router, did I say cost?
I had the worst router ever in the D-Link 605. It did gigabyte and I loved that but the wifi was so unstable it couldn't stay connected to anything. I had to turn all the wifi adapters in the house to g to maintain a connection. I took that to work and replaced it with a Linksys WRG 64T. That was a little more stable, a little but had no range, no N and no gigabyte.

I plugged this router in, flashed the bios, set it up and now I get 3 bars on wifi 100 feet outside the house which is important since my T-Mobile phone needs wifi to get a signal at my house. I'm getting full bars in corners of my house that I wouldn't get signal before.

Cons: I didn't buy this sooner. I wasted $25 on a range extender that is unnecessary at my house now. That's half the cost of this router.

Other Thoughts: The local super store doesn't carry this $50 router because it wouldn't sell the $100+ varieties. Otherwise this would be the #1 seller.
