5 out of 5 eggsTp-Link TL-WR1043ND N300 Router

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND Ultimate Wireless N300 Router, Gigabit, 300Mbps, USB port, 3 Detachable Antennas / IP QoS/ QSS Button

Pros: Very light. No weight to it what so ever.
Runs very cool in comparison to old router.
Windows 7 auto configuration. Plug and play.
Don't use wireless, cannot comment on the performance.
Internet is faster now.

Cons: The support link listed in the paperwork, the web site is for sale, it will link you to Google choices. Had to think about this a minute. Went into Network in Win 7, right click the router, enabled it, right click the icon again, click "visit web site". Brings you to the set up page.
The wireless button for off and on does not work. With my visit above, I turned it off. Picked up 3Mbps on LAN upload. There are a lot of features for this router to enable or disable in the site

Other Thoughts: Replaced a 5 year old TL-WR1042ND router with this one. Had good service from it, Started to run very warm. Hope to get same from the new.

1 out of 5 eggsHuge let down

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND Ultimate Wireless N300 Router, Gigabit, 300Mbps, USB port, 3 Detachable Antennas / IP QoS/ QSS Button

Pros: Easy to set up.

Very nice speeds for 15 minutes out of the day.

Very nice paperweight.

Cons: Worst signal drop I've ever experienced.

Slowest download speeds I've ever seen (I even took screenshots in case I ever need to suddenly burst into tears).

Less reliable than using my shoe as a router.

Other Thoughts: At least Newegg got it to me quickly.

5 out of 5 eggsRe-Review

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND Ultimate Wireless N300 Router, Gigabit, 300Mbps, USB port, 3 Detachable Antennas / IP QoS/ QSS Button

Pros: Nice speed. Looks cool. Detachable antennae. Love it. Buy it and even get antennae for it. Save money with this, or spend 3 to 4 x more for something else.

Cons: Comes with 3 x 3 dbi Antennae (read below) and this is a re-review. The antennae it comes with make it an average router. Suggest you read my previous review.

Other Thoughts: Replaced the 3 x 3 dbi antennae for bragging rights, with TL-ANT2408CL x 3 (8 dbi antennae) from TP-Link currently $8 a piece. If you read my first review, you know that I used an Edimax mini range extender before and after I switched to this router. Now that I put on 3 x 8 dbi antennae on this thing, I don't use the Edimax anymore. So gonna sell it. My opinion (which is very knowledgeable) is this:

#1 I have $50 from purchase and $25 from buying antennae into this thing for a total of $75.

#2 Even though I spent $25 for 3 x 8 dbi antennae, if or when this router dies, I still have my 3 x 8 dbi Antennae.

#3 I cant find a router for $50 with the features this 1 has, Gig ports, speed boost, usb port, ability to run ddwrt. I have to go $20 more and still get another TP-Link just with dual band (Dual band has no range worth talking about).

#4 Its N300. My ISP (Internet service provider) Gives me 67 MB/s speeds. I love it and its seriously great. Even if I go to Business class my max then will be 150 MB/s. N300 is up to 300 MB/s. So I'm using 1/4 of its potential Wifi and if I upgrade I'll use half, just from wifi. Gig ports are null and void since their wired and not wireless.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND Ultimate Wireless N300 Router, Gigabit, 300Mbps, USB port, 3 Detachable Antennas / IP QoS/ QSS Button

Pros: Works great. Set up was easy as eating. Gigabit ports if your in a situation that calls for them (Most are not). USB for a printer (Just share it on a computer just as good) but great if I want to do a network storage with a Hard drive that I have many of (Don't like sharing my hard drives or solid state drives, so great for that). Also 3 removable antennae, they are 3 dbi but can be replaced with what ever you want, I see the 8 dbi's currently for $8 x 3 so $24 for more range I don't need (read below).

Cons: Wasn't free

Other Thoughts: I had the TL-WR841N but a friend needed it so I bought this and gave him my TL-WR841N. The range on this is a little better. I use EDIMAX EW-7438RPn Mini N300 bought here at Newegg to extend range. I place mine about 17' away upstairs through walls and get a 86% signal strength to it with this router vs. around 70-75% with the TL-WR841N. Haven't replaced the antennae, was thinking about it, but in a 2 story house with the range extender and router in basement I'm good. But then again $24 for almost triple the dbi antennae and what I paid for this $48 with its features, I think I come out a head vs. other high end routers. I'm happy now and not sure if I want to just blow a trip to Arby's a 6 pack and some smokes to see higher signal strength that's good already.

2 out of 5 eggsWired works, wireless is unacceptably bad

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND Ultimate Wireless N300 Router, Gigabit, 300Mbps, USB port, 3 Detachable Antennas / IP QoS/ QSS Button

Pros: Easy to set up and lots of features. The routing portion works well. VoIP via the unit works well.

Cons: Over time, connection drops increase. The unit is unable to support video without stalling. I have 7 wireless connections at home - 2 phones, 2 tablets, 2 computers, and 1 chromecast. I can't work on my work laptop without the connection re-setting constantly. It's bad enough that I'm going to have to ditch it.

I've tried to minimize the number of features that are in use and nothing has really helped at all.

Other Thoughts: The gradual failing - having to reboot 4x/day in order to just be able to connect to web sites reliably - has turned me off of this brand.

3 out of 5 eggsOverall good router but...

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND Ultimate Wireless N300 Router, Gigabit, 300Mbps, USB port, 3 Detachable Antennas / IP QoS/ QSS Button

Pros: Price
Light weight
Design
3 antennas
Setup is simple
User friendly

Cons: Plastic
Large in size

Connection is lost relatively frequently.

This is unacceptable to me for 3 reasons;
- Size of my house (50th long)
- Where this router is located (out in the open)
- 3 antennas and it still drops connection multiple times over the course of a few hours from 40ft away? Unacceptable.

Other Thoughts: Light weight, not sure if that's good or bad.
Kind of bulky.
Lost an egg or 2 from connection drops...otherwise 5 eggs could be justified for my uses.
If you're looking to use WIFI for gaming, I'd look elsewhere.
You get what you pay for.
Overall I'd recommend for Web surfing, movies and basic use.

Final note:
Even though it drops connection a lot, it does reconnect within a few seconds so it is minimal.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Basic Router But Lacks Some Functionality

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND Ultimate Wireless N300 Router, Gigabit, 300Mbps, USB port, 3 Detachable Antennas / IP QoS/ QSS Button

Pros: I've used other brands and so far I've like TP-Link the best for out of the GUI interface. Detachable antennas are great as you can upgrade them yourself and I have not had to reboot the router like you do on so many other brands when things start acting up.

Cons: I think the interface is very simple to use and has most of the settings you would want. BUT! You can't fitler incoming IP addresses! Example, you want to open port 22 and forward it to a internal server. You don't want port 22 open to the whole world, just from your work's IP address..... can't do it.

5 out of 5 eggsEverything, literally.

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND Ultimate Wireless N300 Router, Gigabit, 300Mbps, USB port, 3 Detachable Antennas / IP QoS/ QSS Button

Pros: Here's why I'm loving this router:

It's fast. I'm pulling 57mbps+ downloads through this sucker without a hiccup. through a floor AND a wall, diagonally.

It's reliable. Shipped with the latest firmware, takes over half of the configuration changes I commit to it without dropping offline, doesn't slow down unless it's getting hit by a ton of traffic (totally normal, I beat on it.)

It's cool! I have the ASUS N66U and this doesn't get CLOSE to as hot as that does when it's on full tilt.

The 450Mbps "boost" is actually noticable, it's not just a gmmick

The software on it has everything a seasoned IT pro would want minus having monitoring suites and servers (except VPN, it does that!)

Oh, and by the way. $45? Who could say no to that?

Cons: No cons. For $45 I replaced what my ASUS N66U was doing that I paid $165 for....then it got hit by lightning.

Other Thoughts: Do not believe for a second that I'm bashing the ASUS N66U. it was hit by lightning that came through our cable line. over $2,000 worth of tech that was plugged into that router was completely destroyed and yet the router only suffered minimal damage. Then it survived almost 2 more years before I decided its life was done. But this TP-Link is really the bee's knees for this price point!
