5 out of 5 eggsReliable Router

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Cheap, Easy to install

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: This was thrown in for free when I bought a Motorola Surfboard modem. I installed DD-WRT firmware on it and have been using it as a wireless repeater for my WIFI for over a year now with great results!!!! Bought Two more here recently to use as wireless repeaters on the network I manage at my church.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for free!

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: Cheap, good enough to stream HD video, supports dd-wrt.

Cons: None really, it is only 150 mbps though. It's 300 mbps, but only half duplex. Only 100 mbps Ethernet connections. That's nit picking for a cheap router though.

5 out of 5 eggsOpenWrt works perfectly

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: The stock firmware works well, but I installed OpenWrt. Currently running the newest Chaos Calmer 15.05. Works like a charm. For $20 you cannot go wrong.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Have 3 in my home. One as a router and two as dumb AP's. Great product.

5 out of 5 eggsWhat a steal!

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: - Easy setup, no hassle, took less than 5 mins for me. simply plug and play.
- Dirt cheap, less than $20
- Stable, fast, and reliable
- Supports DD-WRT

Cons: - Doesn't have the best range

Other Thoughts: For a no nonsense wireless router that cost less than $20 and gets the job done, this is a no brainer and a clear winner IMO. However, If your looking for a long/far range router with a strong signal, this is not for you but if you live in an decent sized apartment and not a big house then this is for you.

5 out of 5 eggsA very average yet reliable router choice.

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: -Average setup similar to most generic routers. eg (192.168.0.1 -> user: admin pass: admin -> click setup wizard)
-Comes with a default 8 digit numerical password so you are never fully exposed with an open network even after factory reset.
-Has a Wifi on/off button on the back which is super useful if you have a problem of kids staying up all night on their devices but still want the direct connected devices to function eg. an office desktop pc.
-Power on/off button (no more fiddling with power cable to power cycle or turn off)
-Good range, much better than the older Generic D-links ive used.
-QoS is a very useful feature.
-Supposedly 2 year manufacture warranty (haven't had to use it yet so i have no experience on the quality of their warranty)
-Wall mount holes/channels on the bottom

Cons: -The materials are a more rugged textured plastic yet white so once the dirt and grime sets in its hard to clean and visibly dirty.
-The wall mounting channel/holes are shallow and the channel being nearly as wide as the hole itself limits the size of screw needed to mount it to a pretty specific size. At least it has a wall mount though.
-Not a super innovative and "pc illiterate friendly" setup like some of the more expensive new routers have these days, but it is the basic setup most generic routers have used forever. Comes with a decent english manual too.

Other Thoughts: I have ordered over 40 of these in the past year setting them up with various clients and have had no complaints yet. I used to set them up with small N300 my-dlink router's which have had on/off intermittent issues for me in the past. At the price i wouldn't even mind if these weren't reliable but so far they've been great! I even have one that i survey with around outdoors on a daily basis that gets dragged through snow, dirt, grass, and rain and still works fine!

5 out of 5 eggsWas supposed to be a spare, but now in full-time use

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: It was a spare I like to have on hand, but when my daughter moved into a rental rather than paying he cable company a monthly fee, I let her use this modem. She's had it in operation non-stop now for 6 months now.

Cons: None

1 out of 5 eggsFaulty hardware or firmware.

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: none

Cons: I bought two of these; both died after a few weeks of use. The wireless simply stopped working and no amount of rebooting, resetting, power cycling, or factory resetting would help. The wireless light would blink steadily, indicating it was not working. Before they broke down they would require resetting every few days.

I returned the first, hoping I'd just gotten a bad one, but the second did exactly the same thing. The only likely explanation to me is that it's this brand and/or model. I've never had two pieces of hardware in a row fail on me like this. If it had happened a few minutes later I would have been stuck without internet for 12 hours.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

We are sorry to see that these devices broke down on you.

It is very rare to see two of the same models break right after the other.

It is hard to determine where the issue may be, and one possibility could be the power source.

We do have a 24 hour technical support hotline and you may feel free to call us anytime you want.

Best Regards!

5 out of 5 eggsTP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: I have DSL through Verizon. They have their own user and passwd for their modem/router. I bought this to add after that modem/router. I removed stock firmware and flashed it with DD-WRT. Works flawlessly. No notice with signal loss as I can adjust the antenna gain to suit.

Cons: I got nuthin'.

Other Thoughts: I didn't use the stock firmware at all with this, so I cannot attest to that. After the flash to DD-WRT, there are a lot of settings (most are the same). There are more updates to the DD-WRT firmware. I don't like waiting a year or two for the manufacturer to issue an update. If you flash to DD-WRT and use a VPN, you might want a different router with at least 8MB flash space. This has 4MB. Was a little disappointed that I didn't even check that, but I already have all my devices set up with VPN, so it didn't matter.

5 out of 5 eggsTP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button

Pros: This was a great buy for the money! I removed the factory firmware and replaced it with DD-WRT. Works flawlessly.

Cons: I got nuthin'.

Other Thoughts: I have DSL through Verizon. They have a password set for the modem/router they give you. I bought this to add after that router for added security.
