3 out of 5 eggsneeds a little work

Pros: Once I got it setup it works great.

Cons: Terrible firmware. See other thoughts.

Other Thoughts: I got this to use as a Dumb AP for my network. I thought this would be a fire and forget type of deal. I changed the SSID, setup the passworkd/security, disabled DHCP and plugged it into my router. It worked, but not well at all.

My unit came with the most recent firmware, and out of the box it was terrible. Dropped connections and instability galore. I was on the verge of doing an RMA but decided to try out one more trick.

I ended up flashing the firmware with OpenWRT and now it works great. If it worked this well out of the box I would have given it 5 stars. I had a TP-Link router I bought years ago and thought it still works flawlessly, so I decided on this model for my new setup. IDK what is going on with the software side, but they really need to fix whatever the problem is. This unit is pretty basic and it has been on the market for years. The fact that it doesnt perform its advertised functionality is a terrible oversight.

1 out of 5 eggsWorked for 2 weeks

Pros: Worked just fine for 2 weeks.

Cons: Stopped working and our tech guy couldn't get it to work. Called TP-Link tech support and after being on hold for a few minutes, voice told me "there is no one to take your call. Please call back at another time. Click."

4 out of 5 eggsWOW! Very impressed!

Pros: -Ease of installation
-Price
-Aesthetics
-Fast

Very simple, plug and play setup. Seems very fast and has a great range. I have this set up at my desktop in my second story and get more than 4 bars at my street which is more than 50 yards away.

Cons: none so far. :)

5 out of 5 eggs1.5 years and no issues

Pros: Worked with Windows 2008R2 Radius Server to hand out cert to domain laptops. Never once had an issue or locking up. PoE makes it a very easy install in ceiling without having to run an outlet.

Cons: Can't use multiple VLANS if you use a Radius setup.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks like a charm

Pros: This device was easy to set-up, easy to configure and has worked faultlessly for as long as I have owned it. It comes with it's own POE power injector which is fantastic.

has all the features and security that I required for my home network. Great signal strength and coverage.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I prefer a wired router and switch since my house is wired with cat 5 and the switch and router are in a wiring cabinet in the basement and i want even distribution of wireless signal throughout the house. Using the included power injector I was able to put the device in a central location on the ground floor and run it with a single cable. Extremely convenient.

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: Cheap, Removable Antenna....

Cons: Absolutely worthless, only getting 1.2Mbps Down Upload is good at 270Mbps... Choppy transmission, Useless UI.

Other Thoughts: I've re-flashed the Firmware, no fix, tried every setting in the menu, I'm using it as a Client station for my server. My old G-Adapter wipes the floor with this thing... Would never buy a TP-Link product again...

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

It’s unfortunate to hear that this product isn’t working for you. The WA901ND does have a ‘Client’ function which would allow a device or server to wirelessly connect to a Router. This link may help find any steps that might have been missed during the initial setup:
http://www.tp-link.com/en/article/?faqid=288

It’s curious that you are getting a low download speed, and it would be a good test to see what you get via Ethernet or another Adapter like your G that you have. You can also test the transmission speed in the AP’s configuration page – this is under Wireless > Throughput Monitor. It seems as everything is configured correctly, and the issue points to possibly a far Distance or obstruction between the Router and the Client.

Our Technical Support is available 24 hours a day and would be happy to assist you if your problems persist.

5 out of 5 eggsAccess Point for Dummies

Pros: Bought this and a TP-Link TL-R860 8 port router to replace a Linksys E1000. Both work great, took out of Box and plugged in didn't even bother trying to upgrade the firmware. Used Internet Explorer and http://192.168.1.254/ to go to the access point menu. Easy set-up, I'm using 4 Zones ( Mighty Mouse, Mr. Mouse, Home Zone, Guest Mice and Rats) with MAC filtering so only our devices work even if someone hacks past our Password. Working fine on Roku, 2 Laptops, Cell Phones, Kindle Fire, USB adapters, etc. etc...getting 20Mbps download, 9 Mbps upload COX Cable Internet, thats the same as my wired PC. 3 Transmit Power levels, a wireless on/off switch and Standard antenna connectors on back of unit. I like it, works for me, would buy again.

Cons: None really, I haven't had ANY issues. I disabled the Quick Secure Setup ( QSS ) someone said it helps prevent drop outs with it disabled. I just use MAC Filtering option and manually enter each device MAC address. Can't comment about signal strength, live in a single story small home works fine with Medium Power Level selected.

Other Thoughts: Just plug it into your Network or use a Laptop or Wireless adapter to connect through your browser to set it up. I wasted 2 hours screwing up, then fixing my PC IP address trying to follow the instructions for a direct PC to WAP connection that I didn't even need. If someone is amped up in your area they can interfere with any wireless signal if they are a jerk. Fortunatly were not having Wi-Fi wars here (yet).
