4 out of 5 eggsTL-WA901ND

Pros: 1 egg for ease of use

2 egg for wifi range

3 egg for cost vs effectiveness

4 egg it has lasted more than a year plus descent omnidirectional range - 25+ yards

Does not get fifth egg as it is missing the ability to use 802.3af POE

Cons: cannot handle more than 8 devices connected to it, it will drop all connectivity. Only has standard POE pass through (That means you cannot use any POE device, such as a cisco POE switch or something more common, you have to use the POE injector it comes with, it does not support 802.3af One more thing to plug in

Other Thoughts: Good for the price, it is cheap, will work with a few devices. relatively Easy setup

5 out of 5 eggsAP that's truly Accessible

Pros: CHEAP, Include POE injector, Compact, Flexible, Reliable, and they look good too.

Current model is version 3, which ships set to dynamic, so there's no longer a need to configure it before putting it on the network. just plug it in, and point your browser to the dhcp address. can have it fully functional in less than 5 minutes.

Cons: None really.

Other Thoughts: The Pictures shown, are of version 1&2 of the device.
This device was completely redesigned for v3, and as such looks completely different. the current model looks exactly like the 801nd, just with a 3rd antenna.

As a network consultant, this is my AP of choice. As such i have deployed close to 100 of these (v3) in the last 6 months, not to mention all the (v2) models i deployed last year.

2 out of 5 eggsDecent range great for the money except...

Pros: Lots of features, QoS, SNMP, etc. good price. 4 out of 5 starts for range. 4 out of 5 stars for throughput. QSS.

Cons: I have the same issue as several other reviewers. After some time, the AP just locks up and must be reset/power cycled. I have installed all the updates, tried many different combinations of settings. I have taken it out of service as it is not reliable. Have had it in use for over a year. finally tired of resetting it.

Other Thoughts: If it didn't need a reboot every few days/week or so, 4 out of 5 stars. But it seems to be a common problem. This has been happening for over a year now. Thinking of trying DD-WRT to see if that fixes the locking up issue. It is supported on ver 1.x & 2.x.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

Thank you for taking the time to check out our Access Point.

If you haven't already then I would suggest trying to upgrade the firmware of the device.

You can find this on our website at: http://www.tp-link.us/products/details/?categoryid=&model=TL-WA901ND#down

DD-WRT is also a good Third Party solution as it has been shown to be a stable firmware.

As far as Wireless configuration goes, the best settings are usually changing the Wireless channel wdith to 20 MHz and the Wireless channel to a frequency that isn't commonly used.

If you have any issues or concerns then feel free to contact me directly at howard.he@tp-link.com.

2 out of 5 eggsTL-WA901ND Access Point

Pros: Easy to use GUI and easy to configure regardless of your technical knowledge.

Cons: I have had the product nearly 6 months and it is an extremely unstable AP! Requires frequent reboot / power cycles when Access Point locks up and becomes unresponsive. Even with ping watch dog feature enabled, it is extremely unstable.

This is a common problem, and I have spent countless hours reconfiguring and trying different settings to try and stabilize this product. Changing from b/g/n mode to b/g mode is the only way I have found to stabilize the wireless network using these access points. I am down to one reboot per week, but if I wanted a wireless g access point I would have bought one. Sacrificing bandwidth to stabilize the network is not an acceptable solution.

Other Thoughts: Already have replacement AP from a different manufacturer on order. It can't be any worse than the TP-Link. I have other TP-Link products and do not have any problems. I will only avoid their access points.

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsStressful WiFi Production After Install AP

Pros: Very easy to config and deploy. Very nice range for the price, better than the Cisco Linksys routers that were in use.
Got this to solve weak single problem and to take the router function part out of the WiFi device. Works great for AP when it doesn't have to be rebooted.

Getting a replacement to hope to solve the limited connection and no internet access problem. I will update my review after a few weeks with the replacement.

Cons: Some devices can't connect while other have no problem. I start getting "limited connection" or "no internet access", only on some of the devices while others have no problem what so ever. Rebooting the AP helps sometimes but not all the time. For the devices that have no problems connecting they keep constantly dropping and re-connecting, is this a device or access point problem?

I have upgraded the firmware to the latest and performed the recommended settings provided by TP-Link support staff.

Other Thoughts: The TP-link support staff is not very knowledgeable with the company's products.

4 out of 5 eggsdecent for the price, but beware "passive" PoE

Pros: This is an inexpensive AP that is capable of performing multiple different functions: AP, wireless extending, etc. I've only used it in AP mode, and it's worked fine so far. I flashed it up to the latest firmware, but I wasn't having any issues with the older firmware it came with.

I have little to compare/contrast it with in terms of range. A single one wouldn't come close to covering my mom's house (which is where I was deploying them), but she has a huge house with lots of stone and hardwood, so I can't blame the AP for that.

Cons: Here's the biggest con, and I'm going to write it in all-caps: "PASSIVE" POE IS NOT REAL POE. The ONLY way to use PoE with this AP is to use the included injector. It will NOT work with a PoE-capable switch or NIC, because it doesn't include the necessary PoE autonegotiation circuitry to tell the switch/NIC that it wants PoE.

I get it why it's only passive ("fake") PoE instead of real PoE: TP-LINK wouldn't have been able to hit their target price point if they had included real PoE capability. And the product description is upfront that it supports "passive PoE". But if you don't carefully research what "passive PoE" means, the name alone doesn't tell you much.

Other Thoughts: If you have no intention of doing PoE with this AP, then I think it's a great bargain for the price. But I'm docking a star for the description not being 100% forthright that "passive PoE" actually means "PoE only supported with injector".

Also, I would suggest NOT letting the AP autoselect the frequency band. I deployed two of these with band-autoselect enabled, and they picked adjacent bands, despite the fact that there were NO other APs in range. Use a Wi-Fi scanner app for your mobile phone to find the best band. (Even if you're only deploying one, you still might need to take your neighbors' APs into account.)

4 out of 5 eggsInstalls easily, works well except for PoE

Pros: Cost, ease of setup

Cons: PoE: Power over Ethernet is underpowered. I first tried it with a few cat6 Ethernet segments, and it broadcast no SSID signal despite all power and connection indicators showing green. Shortened it and tried a 25 foot segment, and it operates correctly, although with weak signal. The same wireless brand relay 75 feet away from the station cannot achieve a connection while this unit is on PoE (although it can be connected to by clients who are closer). Swapping the unit to self-powered instead of PoE and the relay works great with 4 bars of signal. I can only surmise that the PoE setup for this unit is underpowered. Otherwise, it's worked as described, and this may be a minor or non-existent issue for many/most purchasers.

Other Thoughts: As others have mentioned, the unit does look different than the pictures. This is a non issue for me, but I thought it might be helpful to know what it does look like. It has the same general shape as the pictured unit (horizontal unit), but it has a rounded top, is all white with a new age/abstract mottled pattern of decorations and air vents across the top. This represents no functional difference other than the unit is not flat and cannot be stacked or otherwise used as a flat surface.

5 out of 5 eggsNice

Pros: Using this in an agricultural cold room (Controlled Atmosphere) environment for WMS applications. Getting great signal across the entire cold room (about 100ft X 100ft with multiple stacks of pallets, many of which are stacked 2+ high) even with all the obstructions (both near and far away) versus my old AP which dropped half the room.
The included passive PoE made this super easy with my existing PoE setup- Thanks!

Cons: Being that the setup was easy and I did not receive a DoA, I can find no cons at the moment. I cannot yet speak to its longevity due to such brief ownership of the product.

Other Thoughts: The picture Newegg displays for the TL-WA901ND is innaccurate to what I received (however, looking at the packaging it shows that the device I got is "Version: 3" - What I got is identical to what Newegg displays for the "lesser" models, except mine has 3 antennas. Doesn't appear to have any impact on performance, so who cares? I don't.
Also, the specifications as of this review (11/13/2013) show that TL-WA901ND comes with three 4dBi antennas, which is incorrect according to the packaging I received (three 5dBi antennas)- a pleasant surprise.
Paired this router with an EnGenius EAG-2408 antenna [warning- not compatible out of the box, you will need an adapter- not included] and retained 2 of the stock 5dBi antennas for a happy balance of short, medium and long distance transmission. Hope it lasts.

1 out of 5 eggsDoesn't accept wireless connections

Pros: Simple web interface

Cons: This access point does not reliably accept connections.

The product picture was wrong.

Other Thoughts: I immediately installed the latest TP-LINK firmware (TL-WA901ND_V3_130828).

The product I received was a version 3 hardware.

This access point is going back to newegg.
