4 out of 5 eggsgood price/performance

Pros: easy to set up (but I've set up several), good range

Cons: doesn't do the advertised 450 Mbps

Other Thoughts: My 5-year old $15 TL-WR740N finally died, so I replaced it with this. The old one (rated at up to 150 Mbps) usually got me up to 65Mbps speeds on my phone (capable of a, b, g, n, dual band, ac), sometimes up to 130 Mbps on my laptop, got me fair range around the house. The new one (the TL-WR940N) gives me up to 72Mbps on my phone, up to 144 Mbps on my laptop, and substantially better range around the house, maybe won't have to replace dead access point in the garage after all.

4 out of 5 eggsA Real Value

Pros: Stupid easy setup.
Dynamic DNS

Cons: Antennae not removable/upgradeable
no USB
no vpn
feels cheap

Other Thoughts: Just getting started with some testing, but so far it seems like a great value. It is sending a stronger signal than my Asus RT-N66U which was surprising. The interface doesn't have all the bells and whistles. But really, for 99% of the public that just doesn't matter. They don't care about QoS and throttling connections and setting bandwidth limitations etc. They just want an easy to use and reliable wifi access point. I picked this up for $20 on sale to use at my mom's house when I visit but I may keep this and take the Asus to her house IF the connection proves reliable over the next few weeks. For $20 you really can't go wrong if this fulfills your feature needs.

1 out of 5 eggsExcellent Range but needs to be reset OFTEN

Pros: Excellent Range
Good price if the wifi lan connection would be more stable

Cons: I used to be a computer technician so I know what I'm doing when it comes to routers setup. Anyhow, I have a multi router set up (5) at home that has worked flawlessly for many years now. Recently, I added this router to be used as an access point since I needed another router in my basement. In my setup, all routers are used as access points and directly wired to the main router. Everything works fine with this router and I am quite impressed with the range. Unfortunately, the Wifi lan connections to the routers get disconnected approximately once a day and the router needs to be reset, sometimes it does work for 2 to 3 consecutive days before I need to reset it. The firmware is the latest available and only two computer and one ip cam are configured to access this access point so it not overloaded. I spent many hours trying to find a misconfiguration, a bug or anything that could cause the problem but it seems to be a hardware or firmware problem which I cannot do anything about. From my internet search, I found many people have the same problem with this router. When I replace this router with another brand router, everything works fine like the rest of the setup so there is definitely a problem with this router. NOW YOU KNOW.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

Thank you for taking the time to review our Router.

If you are setting up this device as an Access Point, then the best type of configuration would be to change the LAN IP to make sure it doesn't conflict with any other device on the network, and then disable DHCP so you don't have any DHCP Server conflicts.

It is hard to determine by your post as to where the issue may be, but we would love to help trouble-shoot if you are wiling.

We do have a 24 hour technical support team that may assist you with this Router. Please feel free to reach out anytime.

Best Regards!

TP-LINK Support Team

4 out of 5 eggsNice product, where's the support

Pros: Nice package.
Easy to set up.
good bit rate performance

Cons: As with any router I wanted to update the firmware.
The website download page repeatedly crashed with runtime errors for 2 hours. Product web page would not load. Called tech support. Got a few transfers before being disconnected. Not a way to run an airline.

Other Thoughts: Hope I have a good firmware.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat router but NEEDS the firmware update

Pros: Started out as a great router. Really impressed with the range and sustained wireless speeds. Initially thought my ISP was screwing me, but it was actually my Linksys dying on me. Much cheaper than other routers with the same options. Started having wifi connection issues after 6 months of use.

Cons: Major connectivity issues (slow/lost connections needing reboots 1-3/day) requiring a firmware update.

Other Thoughts: Initially tried the firmware update, but had connectivity issues with my chromecast, so I stayed on 3.14. After six months, started having connection issues requiring 2-3 reboots a day and then become even more frequent. Was about to toss the router in the trash, but finally did the 3.19 firmware update. HUGE improvement. Chromecast works flawlessly and the router has been up for72 hours with non-stop Twitch and Netflix streams without issue.

4 out of 5 eggsgreat buy for the money

Pros: high area of operation, good price

Cons: can't unevenly distribute bandwidth

Other Thoughts: I bought my TP-LINK TL-WR940N Wireless N300 Home Router about a year ago. I have had a few issues but for the price of $30 I’d have a hard time replacing this. Overall this router has worked great for five phones, three computers, two Playstation 3’s, two Wii’s, a Playstation 4, and a file server. The router range covers my entire house which is two floors and 1100 square feet. The signal will reach my drive way as well but the signal is weak and can be intermittent sometimes.

The set up for this router initially was quite easy. It took my wife under an hour to finish setup, and she has almost zero IT experience. I ended up configuring the router set to dual broadcast both 802.11g/n standards. I have found the Wii’s play better on the g standard for some reason. The WPA2 security is relatively standard for any router you will get now. One of the things I really enjoyed was the 7.9” x 5.5” x 1.2” size. Once I put all the antennas into a horizontal position it fit perfectly into a small cabinet I have in my desk; my modem also fit snug into the same cabinet. I just vented the little space with a hole-saw drill bit and they have both been running like champs since.

The router is advertised at being able to handle 300 Mbps, but I have found that even using FTP to transfer files across two hosts with no other devices on the network the max speed I am able to obtain is closer to 270 Mbps. This isn’t a huge deal as I’ve only had to make a file transfer of this size once to my file server from a computer. I also have never even come close to hitting those speeds with my devices. The closest I’ve come to seeing any latency was when I once was playing my PS4 while I was downloading a few files off my seedbox and my wife was watching some videos on Youtube. I have a recorder that feeds me my frames per second and I think it only dropped by three for four frames. I would have never even known had I not double checked my FPS for my stream. Needless to say but the bandwidth sharing that this router provides is no joke. The bandwidth sharing is set to always distribute bandwidth evenly at all times. I sometimes wish uneven distribution was an available option for selfish reasons though.

This router is a great buy for the money. I’d suggest it for almost all levels of use. The only people I’d say this isn’t for is commercial and very high-end users.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat router for the short time it worked properly

Pros: Great range, covers a single bedroom apartment with ease. Steams at 25mbps, so my cable connection is not bottlenecked on WiFi.

Cons: Intermittent connectivity after about 4 months of use. Requires 3-4 reboots a week and sometimes in a single day. Sometimes the connection slows down to a crawl and some times it is lost completely. Got about half a year's worth of use, but not it's time to find a more reliable replacement.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Strong and consistent signal so far. Streams to TV just fine.

Cons: My laptop and this router do not get along. Internet is fine to all other devices but the moment I connect my laptop to wifi, signal goes down across all devices. I have to reset router and switch to browsing on my phone if I want to be streaming Netflix and be on internet. Laptop is a Lenovo Yoga 2 with Windows 8.1.
