1 out of 5 eggsUnreliable

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841ND Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button, 2 detachable antennas

Pros: -Cheap

Cons: -Wired and wireless connection drops frequently when connected to this device. Resetting it and changing the channel width does nothing to help. Firmware is updated to the latest as well.
-Connection is slow when it does connect to the internet. Replaced the cable it came with and it still does not work. Currently using my old router which does not have these issues.

Other Thoughts: Will be looking for a different router from a different company. The shipping cost to return this is as much as the router itself so I will use it as a paperweight.

2 out of 5 eggsWorks decently at first...

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841ND Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button, 2 detachable antennas

Pros: -Cheap
-Worked most of the time

Cons: -For some reason I had one device that, when connected to this router, wouldn't transfer at more than a few KB/s. All other devices worked fine with this router, and all other routers worked fine with this device.
-Occasionally required restart
-After almost 3 years, the wired ports stopped working properly. Devices plugged into the LAN ports cannot get a working connection.

Other Thoughts: I installed DD-WRT and that seemed to fix the issue for an hour or so, then the ports died again.

The WAN port works fine, so right now I have the router set up as a bridge (using DD-WRT) and configured the WAN port to be LAN instead, and it's running fine with one device plugged into the WAN port and connecting to my new router over Wi-Fi.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

Thank you for your review.

That is a very interesting setup and we are glad to see that you where able to make the best out of your situation.

DD-WRT is definitely another great solution when it comes to Firmwares and our devices.

We do have a 2 year manufacture warranty and can replace the device if it is defective or broken.

Feel free to contact our 24 hour technical support or you may feel free to contact me directly at howard.he@tp-link.com with any issues or concerns.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent router

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841ND Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button, 2 detachable antennas

Pros: Great router with advanced features for a small price

Cons: As with all routers I have owned; both expensive and cheap, this one has the occasional hiccup requiring a router reboot to restore connection. This occurs less than once a month though which is by far acceptable. I used to own an expensive Cisco router that dropped almost daily.

3 out of 5 eggsSo So

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841ND Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button, 2 detachable antennas

Pros: It worked when I plugged it up and still does. For the discount I guess it wasn't a bad price but that is it.

Cons: Not much any difference than my older Belkin. I can not tell that it gives a stronger, faster signal or handles any more devices. I spent some more money to still have a wi-fi that still can't reach 50 ft. through a couple walls.

Other Thoughts: If you don't have a wi-fi it's worth the price, if you think it is going to be any better, it's still a cheap one and that is all you get.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

Thank you for checking out our Router.

One suggestion may be to try some sort of Powerline solution to get through your walls.

In some cases the walls may be dense and will not allow a good signal to pass through.

Here is a link to our Powerlines. These will allow you to send your data through the actual circuits in the wall:
http://www.tp-link.us/products/?categoryid=206

Another suggestion may be to change the Wireless channel width to 20 MHz. This has been known to improve the stability and speed of the connection.

If you have any issues or concerns then feel free to contact me directly at howard.he@tp-link.com.

3 out of 5 eggs2nd updated review

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841ND Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button, 2 detachable antennas

Pros: inexpensive, supported by ddrwt

Cons: not long lasting. kinda unreliable

Other Thoughts: This is a update for my review on 2/5/2014. After running stably for 2 years, it start to ramdonly stuck and need reboot almost every day.
After I flash it using DD-WRT firmware, router won't be dead everyday, but it is unstable and short time disconnect with device after running for more than 1 day. I finally work around it by using cron job to reboot it every day automatically. and it may be fair to increase rating from 2 to 3 eggs.

For everyone who don't want to spend extra money on a new router and risk another unstable router. Try following steps to work around it.

1. update it with dd-wrt firmwire. There is multiple version of 841nd, so don't use wrong firmware.
2. In the dd-wrt web interfaces, administration->management, scroll down, you will see a section for cron, add following line here

30 2 * * * root /sbin/reboot

This line will reboot router at 2:30 am every day. you can put whatever time you want.

3. click "save" button at the bottom of page.

1 out of 5 eggsver 8.2 is junk

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841ND Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button, 2 detachable antennas

Pros: price

Cons: Summary: I received version 8.2, and my router is junk. It requires a reboot every day or two. Unit freezes and is completely unresponsive. Web UI is unresponsive. Power cycle corrects problem. No firmware updates.

More detail: I have 5 devices connecting to the unit via Wi-Fi, and 1 wired Qnap NAS. I have been doing a lot of transfers of data from the pc's to the NAS (pc's connecting to router via wi-fi, NAS connected to router via wire). Ever since I started making these large data transfers inside my LAN, the router has started to freeze every day or two. Apparently it cannot handle the transfers, either due to firmware bug or hardware defect.

Other Thoughts: I contacted Tp-Link support, who was friendly and promises to call me back within 1 day for a replacement. I will expect Tp-Link to cover the shipping costs for the return/exchange. If they handle the situation professionally and I receive a replacement that is not buggy, I will be happy to post a new review. For now, I suggest that you avoid this one. Recent reviews of this model have shown MANY low-ratings due to defective routers.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

We appreicate your review.

It is good to see that this device was easy to setup for you and that this worked fine in the home.

One possible solution may be to upgrade the antennas of the device to a higher gain antenna.

You can find some of our indoor antennas on our website at: http://www.tp-link.us/products/?categoryid=217

We hope that the Dual-band adapter is working out for you and we hope that you will be able to check out more of our products in the future.

Feel free to contact me directly with any issues or concerns at howard.he@tp-link.com.

2 out of 5 eggsIt lasts just 2 years

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR841ND Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mbps, IP QoS, WPS Button, 2 detachable antennas

Pros: cheap, easy to setup. signal is good, stable for just 2 years.

Cons: After putting in use for almost 2 years, it begins to die. It randomly halt within 24 hours and I have to reboot it every day. It's fair for a $23 router working for 2 years, but I know a lot of similar cheap router lasting much longer time.

Other Thoughts: I'm some disappointed because it was stable for 2 years and just passed the 2-year-warrety.
I tried to use different channel IDs and updated to latest official firmware. None of above could save it.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

Thank you for your review.

One suggestion is to update the firmware from our website with the newest firmware.

http://www.tp-link.us/products/details/?categoryid=&model=TL-WR841ND#down

You will want to select the Hardware version of your Router and then select the latest publishing date of the firmware.

I would also try changing the Wireless width to 20 MHz. This can help improve the stability of the device.

Feel free to contact me directly at howard.he@tp-link.com and we can try to help trouble-shoot this device.

Best Regards!
