1 out of 5 eggsmostly bad

Pros: the settings pages offer more advance features than your average rent-a-router or whatever it is you get from your ISP.

has really good range and if i recall correctly you increase the amount to boost range. allocating bandwidth to the other devices connecting both wired and wirelessly, static and dynamically in our home network so that we would not have a situation where computer x couldn't game while device x was streaming netflix, for example. port forwarding works, although i find it strange they have this under virtual server, none the less it works. allows me to run programs behind the firewall such as HFS (http file server), Android Remote, etc.

Cons: Lots of stuff to complain about here.
-Runs really hot
-Settings pages are pretty buggy. Router had difficulty remembering port forwarding rules. At times pages would load really slow or not at all.
-After you have more than 2 devices connecting the unit will struggle to keep everything connected
-Had to reboot daily and even 2-3 times a day to maintain high DSL speeds, (possibly a ISP at fault here) but still losses the PPPOE connection as much as 3 times in 1 month and yet the ISP's crudy westell rent-a-router never losses the PPPOE connection
-Just up and died without any warning after 18months of continuous use, while that's not terrible, it doesn't sit well with me and as a result will avoid all TP-Link products from this point forward.

Other Thoughts: Perhaps TP-Link quality controll is not all that terrible, but it doesn't sit well with me and as a result will avoid all TP-Link products from this point forward. they are just too cheaply made to be trusted. Sure is nice to save a buck but it is not worth the headache.

1 out of 5 eggsDrops Connection 5+ times a day

Pros: Price

Cons: Drops connection completely multiple times a day. Tried a different brand of device and no issues.

Firmware will not update i keep getting this error.
DSL Router Update
Image uploading failed. The selected file contains an illegal image.

Other Thoughts: Bought this b/c of the decent rating but it has failed me. Worked ok for about the 1st month and now its depressing trying to use it.

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

Pros: Cheap, versatile (ADSL2+ modem and an E-WAN port)

Cons: No guest wireless available (i.e. in hardware version 4.0) - even with latest firmware (140228) - even though it's advertised all over their website for this model. Firmware update doesn't work from healthy W7/64 PC with IE11 (had to use XP PC with IE8.) Wireless throughput super flaky right out of the box - even though Ethernet throughput works perfectly (not attributable to range or interference). Threw it in the trash without bothering with a warranty replacement.

Other Thoughts: I am a TP-Link fan and have deployed dozens of their devices over the past several years. However, it seems that the more complex their devices get, the more they have performance and reliability issues.

BTW, as I write this, the tp-link.com server is completely down.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsNew Firmware Fixes WiFi Issues

Pros: A few months ago, TP-Link released a new firmware version for this device. The problems I had listed in a previous review has been resolved. WiFi stays connected as it should. Only problem I have now is with my ISP and their throttling practices.

Cons: Like any modem, it needs to be power cycled about once every 10-12 days. No complaints.

Other Thoughts: TP-Link seemed to respond quickly after issues with the WiFi capabilities and performance were brought to their attention. Thank you, TP-Link. Headaches are gone.

5 out of 5 eggsRetraction and Apology

Pros: I herewith Apologize for and Retract all and everything stated in my previous two(2) posts regarding this item.

The SUDDEN (mid-byte) decrease in Download speed: (10+Mb/s to <00.3Mbs - Upload unaffected)
was due to the sudden death of my On-Motherboard Ethernet device:
(Intel(r) PRO/100 VE Network Connection)(DELL Optiplex 170L pc).

I had an old (very) Ethernet card in my junkbox: 3COM EtherLink XL 10/100 PCI TX NIC -
plugged it into an empty PCI slot ... problem solved.

I extend my apology to Newegg and my MOST PROFOUND apology to TP-LINK for my flying off the handle.

Cons: None

1 out of 5 eggsDied Young

Pros: Ordered 12mar2014. Timely Shipping/delivery. Connection, setup simple. Worked fine. Very pleased with its performance.

Cons: It died yesterday, 17jun2014

While it was working, I give it a full five rating. Because it died so soon and sudden, gotta take back 4 of those eggs.

Other Thoughts: Extend/increase the lifespan of these things.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT USE FOR WIFI

Pros: It has two antennas...most have one...Umm...I like the design on the top of the box.

Cons: I had previously owned one of these, but got fed up with all of the constant wifi disconnects, slow wifi speeds, HTTP 400 "Bad Request" when navigating router/modem settings via 192.168.1.1, and having to power cycle it 5+ times a day, etc...so I finally got it replaced via RMA.

I bought this one as a substitute until the RMA replacement came. It worked GREAT for 3 days. Then the tell-tale signs listed above began, but it resolved quickly. But, as before it gradually got worse and now it's needing to be power cycled and reset a couple times before the connection is restored. This is done about 2 times a day now, so far.

The connection becomes unstable, the link quality drops significantly, and eventually the connection drops...and drops...and drops...

The problem lies within 2 possible factors: 1) The hardware has fundamental problems and will not withstand less than normal wifi usage. 2) The firmware is fundamentally broken and eventually breaks the wireless capabilities of the modem/router.

When connected via ethernet, there are NO problems. No disconnects, no problems - except the HTTP 400 "Bad Request" pages when accessing 192.168.1.1 settings (THIS LEADS ME TO BELIEVE IT'S A FIRMWARE PROBLEM). The speed on wired is FAST, almost faster than what my ISP is providing.

I have tried several wifi enabled devices and they too, experienced the speed, loss of connection, etc...

TP-Link needs to properly investigate these issues with the wireless connectivity of this product (and possibly other similar models).

Please, if you are going to use your wifi for checking email, browsing, occasional youtube/streaming, downloading updates monthly, or anything more, then do not buy or use this product until it is fixed! You will have nothing but headaches, trust me...it'll be worth it to spend $20 more on a different brand that WILL work!

Other Thoughts: I gave it one star because it works GREAT when it does work - which is pathetic percentage of the time.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

Thank you for taking the time to review our device.

We are sorry to see that you are having issues with this device.

If you think you are having some firmware issues then you can try to re-flash or upgrade the firmware from our website at: http://www.tp-link.us/products/details/?categoryid=&model=TD-W8960N#down

We try to publish new firmware regularly for performance and stability.

Since you are having some issues with the Wireless, some settings I recommend are changing the encryption to WPA(AES) and the wireless channel width to 20 MHz.

This has been shown to improve the speed & stability of the device as well.

Feel free to contact me directly at howard.he@tp-link.com for any issues or concerns.

3 out of 5 eggsRouter worked well, ADSL was useless with Verizon/Frontier ADSL

Pros: Worked well for wireless connectivity

Cons: Useless with Verizon/Frontier ADSL service.

Other Thoughts: When I obtained this router, it was for wiring a Church. So I had to work with the existing ADSL service. It didn't work. At all. I would recommend it for those who can verify that it works with their DSL service, otherwise it is not a good idea because there are nicer routers for the price.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

Thank you for taking the time to try and review our product.

This is an ADSL 2/2+ Modem Router and is compatible with most popular ADSL ISP's.

Here is a step-by-step guide to show you how to set up the PPPoE for your ISP:
http://www.tp-link.us/article/?faqid=204

The main variables that you will need to obtain from your provider are the PPPoE Username & Password, VCI, and VPI.

If you have any issues or concerns then feel free to contact me directly at howard.he@tp-link.com.

2 out of 5 eggsUnreliable

Pros: When the unit works, it seems to work fine. Fairly moderate range and a fairly good signal. Setup can be easy or very complicated. You do get to choose the proceedure.

Cons: When the unit does'nt work it just dies. It drops connections more than any modem I have ever used. It doesn't just get slow, it completly drops your connection! Checking your connection and rebooting should be in the instruction manual.

Other Thoughts: If you do buy one plan on checking it and rebooting it several times a day. I repair computers and keeping my connection is VERY important. This unit does not offer that. I have reconfigured it several times but with the same sad results. It just keeps droping its connection. I need to look at some other routers now. I just wasted my money on a TP-Link.
