5 out of 5 eggsRetraction and Apology

Pros: I herewith Apologize for and Retract all and everything stated in my previous two(2) posts regarding this item.

The SUDDEN (mid-byte) decrease in Download speed: (10+Mb/s to <00.3Mbs - Upload unaffected)
was due to the sudden death of my On-Motherboard Ethernet device:
(Intel(r) PRO/100 VE Network Connection)(DELL Optiplex 170L pc).

I had an old (very) Ethernet card in my junkbox: 3COM EtherLink XL 10/100 PCI TX NIC -
plugged it into an empty PCI slot ... problem solved.

I extend my apology to Newegg and my MOST PROFOUND apology to TP-LINK for my flying off the handle.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: "Make all words you utter soft, one day you may eat them" {Otoe Goff 1899-1975}

1 out of 5 eggsDied Young

Pros: Ordered 12mar2014. Timely Shipping/delivery. Connection, setup simple. Worked fine. Very pleased with its performance.

Cons: It died yesterday, 17jun2014

While it was working, I give it a full five rating. Because it died so soon and sudden, gotta take back 4 of those eggs.

Other Thoughts: Extend/increase the lifespan of these things.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT USE FOR WIFI

Pros: It has two antennas...most have one...Umm...I like the design on the top of the box.

Cons: I had previously owned one of these, but got fed up with all of the constant wifi disconnects, slow wifi speeds, HTTP 400 "Bad Request" when navigating router/modem settings via, and having to power cycle it 5+ times a day, I finally got it replaced via RMA.

I bought this one as a substitute until the RMA replacement came. It worked GREAT for 3 days. Then the tell-tale signs listed above began, but it resolved quickly. But, as before it gradually got worse and now it's needing to be power cycled and reset a couple times before the connection is restored. This is done about 2 times a day now, so far.

The connection becomes unstable, the link quality drops significantly, and eventually the connection drops...and drops...and drops...

The problem lies within 2 possible factors: 1) The hardware has fundamental problems and will not withstand less than normal wifi usage. 2) The firmware is fundamentally broken and eventually breaks the wireless capabilities of the modem/router.

When connected via ethernet, there are NO problems. No disconnects, no problems - except the HTTP 400 "Bad Request" pages when accessing settings (THIS LEADS ME TO BELIEVE IT'S A FIRMWARE PROBLEM). The speed on wired is FAST, almost faster than what my ISP is providing.

I have tried several wifi enabled devices and they too, experienced the speed, loss of connection, etc...

TP-Link needs to properly investigate these issues with the wireless connectivity of this product (and possibly other similar models).

Please, if you are going to use your wifi for checking email, browsing, occasional youtube/streaming, downloading updates monthly, or anything more, then do not buy or use this product until it is fixed! You will have nothing but headaches, trust'll be worth it to spend $20 more on a different brand that WILL work!

Other Thoughts: I gave it one star because it works GREAT when it does work - which is pathetic percentage of the time.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

Thank you for taking the time to review our device.

We are sorry to see that you are having issues with this device.

If you think you are having some firmware issues then you can try to re-flash or upgrade the firmware from our website at:

We try to publish new firmware regularly for performance and stability.

Since you are having some issues with the Wireless, some settings I recommend are changing the encryption to WPA(AES) and the wireless channel width to 20 MHz.

This has been shown to improve the speed & stability of the device as well.

Feel free to contact me directly at for any issues or concerns.

Best Regards!

3 out of 5 eggsRouter worked well, ADSL was useless with Verizon/Frontier ADSL

Pros: Worked well for wireless connectivity

Cons: Useless with Verizon/Frontier ADSL service.

Other Thoughts: When I obtained this router, it was for wiring a Church. So I had to work with the existing ADSL service. It didn't work. At all. I would recommend it for those who can verify that it works with their DSL service, otherwise it is not a good idea because there are nicer routers for the price.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

Thank you for taking the time to try and review our product.

This is an ADSL 2/2+ Modem Router and is compatible with most popular ADSL ISP's.

Here is a step-by-step guide to show you how to set up the PPPoE for your ISP:

The main variables that you will need to obtain from your provider are the PPPoE Username & Password, VCI, and VPI.

If you have any issues or concerns then feel free to contact me directly at

2 out of 5 eggsUnreliable

Pros: When the unit works, it seems to work fine. Fairly moderate range and a fairly good signal. Setup can be easy or very complicated. You do get to choose the proceedure.

Cons: When the unit does'nt work it just dies. It drops connections more than any modem I have ever used. It doesn't just get slow, it completly drops your connection! Checking your connection and rebooting should be in the instruction manual.

Other Thoughts: If you do buy one plan on checking it and rebooting it several times a day. I repair computers and keeping my connection is VERY important. This unit does not offer that. I have reconfigured it several times but with the same sad results. It just keeps droping its connection. I need to look at some other routers now. I just wasted my money on a TP-Link.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Had it almost a year (Changed internet type) works great! easy to turn off if you need to reboot.

Cons: Can be a little confusing to set up but the default DSL settings should work 9 times out of 10.

Other Thoughts: I had Att and they had 3 settings for Att and I left it to other and it worked fine.

3 out of 5 eggsGood product Zero customer service

Pros: small footprint, good wireless coverage, dual antennae, multipurpose device. Set up is not so automatic for my specific carrier.
I have centurylink in western part of VA. The automatic set up does not work with centurylink. in my area. below is a copy of the review from another site that helped me.
"1. Connect everything per TP-Link Instructions
2. Open IE (will show unable to connect to internet)
3. In address bar type
4. For Username type in: admin and for Password type in: admin
5. Choose Quick Setup
6. These are the important things you need which Centurylink will refuse to provide: VPI: 8, VCI 35, WAN Link Type: IPoE, and it's a Dynamic IP Protocol (you will have places on the setup where you choose this information)

My experience with centurylink was frustrating getting them to help. but that is not held against the product. just my isp. your milage will vary.

Cons: ZERO customer service at TP Link.
Called for technical support over a period of 3 days and always received a "all of our technicians are currently helping others yadda yadda leave a message and we will call you back"
Your assumption is correct, i never got a call back.
There are errors with the manual vs what is displayed on the screen with the set up and the main interface. IE there are references to items that do not exist in the set up menu.

Other Thoughts: your mileage will vary, the product does work well now that its configured correctly. it has not dropped any connectivity with any devises i have in the house. connection with all devises was easy. WiI, roku, tablets etc... AEP is also easy to set up and allows for encryption of pass phrase if needed. The product itself appears quality, however, the complete lack of support and any customer focused response to my calls will lead me to never support their products with my money again.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,
Thank you for reviewing our product.
The most important info to configure the ADSL modem is the VPI/VCI and WAN connection type.
We're happy to hear you figured it out and the modem works fine.

We also apologize for the bad experience caused by the tech support.
Could I have your contact? So that we can arrange our senior engineers call you back.

4 out of 5 eggsPretty easy to install

Pros: Any modem besides the one I got with AT@T is a pro.
If you can read the "Do not proceed any further until you read" booklet, and you're familiar with accessing modems and / or routers via web interface, it's pretty straightforward.

Cons: The modem I got did not look like the one in the Newegg picture. TP-Link updated the look of this modem to an ugly purple with randomly placed air holes on the top.

Other Thoughts: Not real sure about some of these other comments. If you bought an ADSL modem for a Cable internet service you probably shouldn't procreate.
