5 out of 5 eggsNice Router so far - 3 years later!

Pros: 8 ports at a great price. Easy setup. Relatively intuitive setup screens - sort of. UPDATE: I have now owned this router for 3 years - and have only had to reboot it once. If you need 8 ports you should buy this thing. It is an excellent piece and extremely dependable. Cons are still the same but it's worth the effort to set up this dependable product properly.

Cons: My apologies to my friends in Asia, but documentation that comes with your products stinks. It is vague and incomplete, and I get the feeling those who make the product don't know anything about what they are writing a manual for. Terminology is not defined and there is a need to pay good translators to rewrite in other countries' languages. Documentation said default setup is to ignore pings. That's not true. Shields Up failure because the router responded to their pings. Ping response setting was very hard to find. Very crude and insecure setting.

Other Thoughts: Pretty simple setup once you figure out where everything is in the menus. Relatively logical once you get to the right menu. Granted I've only had this router a couple of days, but have not had to restart it yet. I'll update if reliability changes. I replaced an old D-link 4 port router that's still works fine because I could use an extra port or two instead of adding switches or hubs ahead of the router. At least I have a 4 port unit to fall back on if problems start with this new TP-Link unit.

3 out of 5 eggsUpdating review

Pros: You do get a lot for your money and the setup is so simple a newbe can do it. It's been working for a couple of years just fine.

Cons: There are plenty of warnings given during the firmware process and you're foolish to ignore them. I didn't and still toasted my router. The lights all work but won't connect to the internet. What good is that?

Other Thoughts: Guess I got my moneys worth. Just miffed that I followed all the directions and the router still doesn't work!

1 out of 5 eggsSlow

Pros: Easy web interface.

Cons: Chokes my internet service. I have 100mbps download, and even with the firewall turned off the download speed dropped to under 50mb once this router was put in place. I sent an email to TP-Link support and got no response. I will be returning this device.

2 out of 5 eggsGood, but it limits your speed

Pros: This device has a clean, simple interface. It gives you good basic information. The port forwarding function works well and is very intuitive.

Cons: I ran several tests with and without this unit and it consistently slowed my connection by at least 15 Mbps.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy install, great product

Pros: Easy Install, decent quickstart guide, solved my slow internet problem. Pairs well with Ubiquiti Unifi Access Points for a fast and reliable solution in this old house.

Cons: Customer support touts 24/7, but I was unable to get thru. Their terrible setup requires that you press a key every 15 seconds or so, or they disconnect you. So I sent them an email and they haven't yet responded (over 24 hours ago).

Other Thoughts: I wasted a ton of time on a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter that was 6 times more expensive than this, and turned out to be DOA. The TP-Link was SO EASY to install, got me up and running quickly, and solved my slow internet problem (speedtest is 25 times faster than the results with my previous D-link router). Can't figure out how to set priority for my voip phone port, and hoping customer service will get back to me eventually.

5 out of 5 eggsDude, 8 ports. 40 bux.

Pros: Fairly full-featured. Reliable so far. Good brand. Firm construction.

Cons: I don't think this one can be flashed with custom firmware like DD-WRT, but it's pretty full-featured so most people shouldn't need the added functionality.

Other Thoughts: Not a wireless router. I have this as a dedicated router for an IP surveillance camera system. It's currently strapped onto a plywood mounting board. It's been great. Would definitely recommend.

2 out of 5 eggsCheap, but works, most of the time

Pros: Not a bad router for the price, fairly simple to setup, allows for bandwidth sharing. Great for the average home user.

Cons: Dislike the log. My Dlink would allow exporting and several pages for reviewing. This router doesn't. I see one page and no way to export it for analysis.

Other Thoughts: Windows seems to have an issue with this router. After watching a couple of hours worth of video, the entire network suddenly disappears requiring a reboot. I don't fault the router as it works flawlessly under Linux.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

Thank you for your reply and for checking out our Router.

Unfortunately you are unable to export or save the log to this device at this time.

We do have this feature in many of our Routers, but there are a few that are unable to do this.

We get the log from the RAMM, so you will see that the log will delete after a power-cycle.

It is good to see that the device has been working for you and feel free to contact me directly with any issues or concerns at

Best Regards!

2 out of 5 eggsIt's good when it works...

Pros: When it works it works.

It's easy to configure and get working.

Simple and straightforward settings.

Cons: My internet speed is all over the place. I get 60Mbps download when plugged directly into my modem. When I plug in this router it changes anywhere from 35 to 52 Mbps.

It gets very hot due to the amount of traffic I have running through it from my wireless security camera and the recording software.

Due to getting so hot it requires frequent reboots to get it "working"

I have a wireless access point connected to it to provide wifi to my house. Things will randomly stop loading on the wifi such as youtube, netflix, games, etc. It is not the access point because if I switch to back my old router it works fine.

TORRENTS do not work with this router. Look up "router slowdown" it is a big issue with this router. I can't get my torrent speed over 1.5 Mbps after countless setting changes and torrent client changes. Old router works fine.

Random issues with websites not loading or taking a long time to get loading. Seems to be a ping issue where sometimes I'll ping 5ms to a server and then other times I'll ping 50ms to the same server within seconds. Very inconsistent.

Turning off the firewall helped some issues but that's very unsafe to do and shouldn't have to be done for a router to work.

Other Thoughts: The heat issue was solved by putting the router on it's side... Sometimes.

I wasted my money on this because it doesn't work for me. If you have the 2001 internet speeds from 13 years ago then it will be great for you. But I stream lots of videos, have a security camera 24/7 to my pc, and I game on my consoles and this router can't handle that kind of "abuse"
