1 out of 5 eggsTP-LINK TL-ER5120

Pros: none

Cons: Security is non-existent

Other Thoughts: This Router is Made In China. It was hacked by Mac Address Spoofing within hours while being configured. There is no way to delete the embedded information in the software they provide. Resetting to manufacture defaults in software and on hardware does nothing to clear the port under hostage.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,
Thank you for reviewing TP-LINK routers.
Do you mean the ARP Spoofing?
We love to listen to the product requirements and suggestions from the customer.
Could you please drop me an email? So that we can find out a best solution for your network projects.

4 out of 5 eggsfast but firmware has issues.

Pros: Unit Is very fast and easy to set up. Outstanding features and capabilities.

Cons: the firmware has several bugs. after changing default lan address was unable to access web interface. tech support is terrible.

Other Thoughts: after you work around all the bugs the unit performs excellently.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid Value

Pros: Once the 1.02 firmware was released, these units have performed quite well. They're basic, but they work great. I've got 10 of these throughout 9 locations, mostly residential Internet use for roughly 700 people. The GUI is easy for beginners and I've never had any speed issues.

Cons: 1.00 firmware was kinda flakey, but 1.02 is much more reliable. Nothing too fancy- few advanced features, but it all depends on what you use it for.

Other Thoughts: If you're looking for something simple and cheap, this is it.

3 out of 5 eggsToo many bugs

Pros: Fast when it works, GUI is fine once firmware is upgraded, lots of flexibility but missing some basics

Cons: This router has connectivity problems, mostly related to firmware issues. Citrix support blogs are full of unresolved issues exactly like we had at our client's site - intermittent connectivity is never good no matter how fast the router is. There are issues with port forwarding, a specific issue with port 443, workarounds galore, some features flat out just don't work - but the worst is the inability to stay connected under any kind of load. Appears to have a loopback problem too. We can't wait for Cisco to deal with it in their next firmware release, so plug the old slow but reliable Netgear back in, send this RV180 back and order something different.

Other Thoughts: Too bad, we got excited and our client did too with the initial speed, but after struggling with dropped connections, constant refreshing of web-based application pages and other issues for a day, not worth the time - so back it goes

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We are very sorry to hear of the issues you are having with the TL-ER5120. We take pride in the quality of our products, and it pains us to hear of such a bad experience from one of our customers.

Most retailers will exchange or refund a faulty product within 30 days of purchase, otherwise we have a manufacturer warranty on all of our devices, and would be happy to assist you with any exchange necessary.

Please contact our support team and allow us to help you with this.

Thank you for supporting TP-LINK.

5 out of 5 eggsTP-Link

Pros: 350 NAT throughput. Currently have 100mbit internet connection and this device is able to handle two routers on different vlan's at full speed.

Did I mention it can load balance internet connections and has VLAN support per port!

Cons: Lack of documentation

Other Thoughts: - Nat throughput of 350Mbits
- Vlan Support port by port basis
- DMZ Port
- Redudant Internet connectivity configuration if neccessary.

5 out of 5 eggsI use it as a tool

Pros: Very handy tool kit. Very flexible. GbE port mirroring, port by port bandwidth limiting. VLAN support.

Cons: Let's see how it holds up. It's OK so far.
I wish it were in a smaller package.
Some settings seem to revert to default when its powered off for a while (specifically port mirroring).

Other Thoughts: I'm heavily involved in streaming video, both internet and IPTV on carrier networks. I needed a box that could do 2 things, both of which were easily done with this one. First, you can assign a port to mirror another port. This allows you to look at all the packets on a connection by simply inserting this router in line and picking off the mirror to monitor. Secondly I needed the ability to limit the available bandwidth, which this also does.

This router is inexpensive enough to justify having on hand. Enterprise level routers have the features but they tend to be too expensive to just keep around for testing.

2 out of 5 eggsFLAKEY!

Pros: Very Low Cost! Should have been a red flag.

Nice hardware with internal power supply.
Rack mountable.
Has potential... maybe.

Cons: Worked for awhile then never could get it functioning again as I originally configured it! The second router would only work partially which isn't what I need.

Technical support email no response. Phone support:

1). I could barely understand the person, (gal) I spoke with.
2). After a bunch of holds, while she asked someone else, the information provided was wrong as there were settings for what I was inquiring about.
3). The product must be to new as they know nothing about these devices.

The box states "Enterprise Networking Solution". That has become a joke with me. FLAKEY seems the word for these units!

Other Thoughts: I thought the TP-Link Routers, TL-ER5120, were pretty great until this past week.

While I was in Colorado, email stopped going out and suddenly I could not get into our web mail system. Tuesday I get a frantic call from one of my guys that there are hundreds of email messages in our outgoing mail queue so I dial in that evening and spend several hours trying to diagnose the issue and finally simply configured things to go out through our back-up router and as expected, things began working again.

Upon my return to the office I spent 11 hours messing with the TP-Link, several factory reboots and it would simply NOT do what I had originally configured it to do. I tried another one of the TP-Link routers, configured it and I could at least get webmail but I could NEVER get it to pass email out to the Internet.

I have sent several emails to TP-Link US Technical support and duplicates to the main support email. Never a reply.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear John,

I am very sorry to hear of the frustrating problems you are encountering with our device. I would like to work with you directly to help you resolve this with you. Would you please email me directly at the email address I have provided below so you and I may work together to resolve this.

Best Regards!

5 out of 5 eggsSo far So Good

Pros: Setup is a breeze if you are familiar with router/firewall setup. The web management interface is neat and fast for this type of router. Features are great though I am still trying to make the policy routing works. Virtual server functions as port forwarding. So far so good. Very perfect for load balancing. Multiple wan ports is a plus and gigabytes networking is a plus too. This is not UTM router/firewall so be aware. For SOHO great router.

Cons: None so far!

Other Thoughts: Hopefully future firmware upgrade will make it more robust.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat small business router!

Pros: *Rack Mount
*No wall wart
*Robust Firewall options, better than software/os - not overbearing
*Seemed relatively easy to setup

Cons: None that I found so far.

Other Thoughts: Seems to run cool, interface is more utilitarian but not in a negative way; if you're used to setting up routers this is no better/worse than the others. The manual/pdf is 146 pages!

Pros: Fast easy installation. For the money this is a fantastic router!

Cons: Web interface a little slow, 'pedestrian' in look and feel and not intuitive to navigate
