4 out of 5 eggsWR842ND v2 with DD-WRT

Pros: This is a great choice for an inexpensive DD-WRT device. I'm using this to replace a 10 year-old Linux firewall. The USB 2.0 port on here allows me to add storage to the firewall, and was one of my requirements for this device.

Cons: This was the v2, which isn't yet in a stable release of DD-WRT. There is currently svn firmware that runs it nicely.

Other Thoughts: I have disabled the wifi on this device since I right now only want it to be a basic firewall, so I can't comment on the wifi capabilities. This was just the least expensive device with DD-WRT and a USB port. The v2 only has 4MB flash, unlike the other reviewer who mentioned 8MB (not a problem with the 8GB USB stick I bought, let alone a 128MB that would have been more than enough for what I think I'll ever need).

I do plan on picking up a second unit as a spare, low noise & low power firewall.

3 out of 5 eggsCould be worse, Could be better

Pros: Fast, easy to setup, good range, print server, media server, Affordable.

Cons: The USB did not support Windows 7 right out of the box, in fact I had to wait over a year for them to add Windows 7 Support for the USB. The Power Supply went out on it, and when I contacted TPlink about getting a new one I was informed that the Power Supply was not covered by the 2 year Warranty, but rather a 3 month Warranty, so I would have to buy a new one.

Other Thoughts: Bought this to replace a rather troublesome Belkin router and because of the USB support. Yeah its better than that old belkin, but they really need to be more forthcoming about what exactly their router supports in terms of OS and Software, and what their warranty covers. Doubt I will by another from them.

5 out of 5 eggsBest bangf or your buck

Pros: Great router with a USB port for a printer or hard drive. 4 SSID's is a huge plus for family and guests that come over and you want a separate network for them. Excellent range as I have a 2 story home and upstairs gets 5 bars on their laptops and gaming consoles. Signal has been steady for a few months with out ever re-setting the router.

Cons: No Gigabit ports, no 5Ghz band and a max rate of 300 Mbps wirelessly while most companies are now maxing out at 450 Mbps. But for the price and TP-Link's reliability you can't complain.

Other Thoughts: Would definitely buy this router again if needed. Getting my daughter one for her college dorm room.

5 out of 5 eggs841nd with USB port and more Flash

Pros: This is basically an 841nd without having to do a USB mod. It also has 8mb flash instead of 4mb. If you run something like OpenWRT having the extra 4mb flash comes in handy.

Definitely one of those bang for your buck wireless routers.

Cons: notta

Other Thoughts: I thought about modding some 841n/841nd's, but for the price difference and the extra 4mb flash you get in these; it was a no-brainer. My time is worth more than that... I may still do a USB mod on a 841n/841nd just for the entertainment value.

Like said before, this also has more flash memory. So you can do a lot more with it without having to keep external USB connected.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy this if you want a router that works.

Pros: Affordable - especially for a router with USB port.

Cons: Everything else.

I only used this router for a few days. After setting up several times with the included CD, as well as manually setting it up through the web-software, the wireless signal would drop in and out, the range was awful, and when the wireless signal actually would work, the speed was awful. Contacted TP-LINK support, and of course got a person in India for USA support, which also didn't help much. I was able to get the wireless up and running stable, but after a couple of hours of use, it died again.

I bought a Linksys router to replace this one and it works great. If you want a router that actually works, don't choose this one.
