5 out of 5 eggsWorks as designed

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-PA4010KIT High-speed AV 500Mbps Nano Powerline Adapter Starter Kit

Pros: Works faster then my wifi (wireless N) in my old house i could even put surge protectors on it. New house not so much but still good enough.

Cons: Wish i could protect the device with surge protectors but really slows down the speed.

5 out of 5 eggsBest alternative to wireless

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-PA4010KIT High-speed AV 500Mbps Nano Powerline Adapter Starter Kit

Pros: Easy to use, fast, reliable

Cons: Intermittently has to be reset, but not very often

Other Thoughts: Why choose the "500" if the port on the unit is only 100meg? The 500 number is the overhead number. There is huge overhead with Powerline ethernet adapters. This is do to signal noise, etc. When the line is noisy, it drops speed. When you have a signal processor in the unit that can handle 500mbps, you get closer to the 100meg throughput of the port.

1 out of 5 eggsVirtually Useless

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-PA4010KIT High-speed AV 500Mbps Nano Powerline Adapter Starter Kit

Pros: Easy to set up

Cons: Poor, unstable connection

Other Thoughts: Ever since the powerline concept was introduced, I've always been skeptical. I had a unique situation needing an usual solution, so I reluctantly looked into them. Reading reviews, I thought maybe the tech had matured, but it's clearly still a hit-or-miss gimmick.

Unless connected to outlets in the same room, performance is so poor that any other alternative would be better. Even weak wifi is faster and far more stable than this. Connection speeds are low. Pings are high - and all over the place. Connection just drops intermittently.

1 star to Newegg, too, for selling this junk in the first place and then wanting to hit me with restocking and return shipping to return it. Will definitely think twice before buying from Newegg in the future.

1 out of 5 eggsWorks, but insecure.

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-PA4010KIT High-speed AV 500Mbps Nano Powerline Adapter Starter Kit

Pros: Easy to set up and use; decent performance.

Cons: Insecure; difficult to tell how well it will work in a particular situation without trying it.

Other Thoughts: I had a pair of these for a couple of weeks. I made the purchase on a whim when they were on sale, hoping to avoid a difficult network run between floors of a house. Only after the fact did I look seriously at security. While the HomePlug AV spec itself seems to be pretty solid, some manufacturers of these low-cost devices (I've tried 2, including this one; both were vulnerable) took shortcuts that resulted in a major security flaw.

Basically, anyone who can get close enough to your house to see the broadcast traffic on your network (if you live in a densely populated area, this could mean your neighbors' houses/apartments) can find the MAC addresses of your devices, and using the freely available open-source tools distributed by Qualcomm Atheros (the powerline network chipset manufacturer), they can use that to generate the device's unique password that allows the device to be controlled remotely. The end result is an attacker being able to insert themselves into your powerline network. For more details, search for "PLC DAK attack".

I can't recommend these unless you very much know what you're doing and are only using them in an untrusted network segment. Unfortunately, I've found manufacturers' customer service/tech support people to be very unhelpful in trying to figure out whether any given device it vulnerable to this. I would look at ANY of these powerline devices with a hint of skepticism.

3 out of 5 eggsAdvertises 500Mbps, ethernet port is only 100Mbps

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-PA4010KIT High-speed AV 500Mbps Nano Powerline Adapter Starter Kit

Pros: Consistent ping times to router of 6ms
Easy set up
No special software required

Cons: Ethernet port only connects to PC at 100Mbps

Other Thoughts: As the title of the review reads, the ethernet port on this device only connects at 100Mbps; which means you'll never be able to see more than 100Mbps speed from it. The device is easy to set up. It comes with a software that will tell you what network speed you have from your PC to the other Powerline Adapter. When I check this software it tells me it's connecting between 50-150Mbps. Not bad.

I bought this because I run a hackintosh set up and was tired of dealing with all the special requirements for my wifi network. I had to set up my 802.11n router that was capable of 300Mbps speeds in a way that would only allow 150Mbps speeds for each of the computers on the network. Now I don't have to use any special settings.

5 out of 5 eggsWow. Worked without a hitch

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-PA4010KIT High-speed AV 500Mbps Nano Powerline Adapter Starter Kit

Pros: Easy to set up and use. Good speed, though can't say I've fully tested it.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I needed to extend the range of wifi coverage from my miserable Time Warner cable modem box. Using wifi repeaters results in tricky configurations and loss of speed. Powerline adapters are the next best thing to running cat5 through the house. I put one next to the cable modem, put another on the other side of the house and plugged in my ASUS router, and voila. Wifi in the other side of the house with no noticeable drop off in speed.

1 out of 5 eggsTP-Link is Lying

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-PA4010KIT High-speed AV 500Mbps Nano Powerline Adapter Starter Kit

Pros: Pairing was easy

Cons: TP-Link Lied. Without question.
The claim is that this product can achieve a theoretical maximum of 500 Mbps. It is normal to get less than the maximum in real applications. Especially with powerline adapters. I'm generally happy with about 75% of stated max, unless it is a direct wired ethernet.

TP-Link decided to attach a 10/100 mbps RJ45 jack to this unit. Meaning, regardless of what the powerline speed is, you will never, ever get better than 100 mbps. The advertised speed is misleading, if not straight deceit.

In testing, I got about 9-11 MBps, which is about 72-88 Mbps, which is what you would expect from a 10/100 Mbps jack. The two outlets used were on the same wall, about 8 feet from each other.

Other Thoughts: I'm extremely happy I have Premier. Otherwise, the shipping to recieve and to return would have been almost as much as I paid for the product on sale.

I've had other TP-Link products in the past, and have been happy with them, but this was very disappointing. While there was a slight oversight on my part in not noticing the jack was only 10/100, there is no excuse to ever put a slow jack on a product that is advertised at a higher speed than that connection could ever handle. Doing that is knowlingly and intentionally misleading customers.
