4 out of 5 eggsDecent adapters, misleading advertisement

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-PA4010KIT High-speed AV500 Nano Powerline Adapter Starter Kit, up to 500Mbps

Pros: I was pleasantly surprised at how small the units were. Performance was good and the connection was stable and smooth. Super quick setup, just plug it in and use it right out of the box. Cables proved were very good quality and were 7ft cables. Packaging was good and secure so no risk of damage during shipping. Price is decent for the quality and performance. Moving around to different plugs around the house the connection speeds stayed the same, impressive to me that distance really didn’t affect it at all.

Cons: Poor information and gimmicky advertising. First off these are marketed as extendable, meaning I can add more to the 2 that come with this kit. But from the box, manual, Newegg page or even their website I could not find out how many I could add later. Second they advertised this as “up too 500Mbps” while the units only have a 10/100 Ethernet port. Meaning that at a max each powerline adapter can only “maxed out” provide 100Mbps to the attached device.

Other Thoughts: : Lets get this out of the way now. These are great powerline adapters. They provided me with very steady connections and were super easy to use. They came with everything needed and for a great price. I would recommend these to someone if it matched the needs they had for sure.

I have owned other TP-Link devices in the past and really have loved them all. They all performed the tasks they were designed for and I never had one fail. That being said I also like these, but I fell I would have enjoyed them more knowing what to expect ahead of time and not finding out later that they couldn’t even come close to doing what they claim. For a set to claim they will provide up to 500Mbps and only have a 10/100 port really burns me as a consumer. I would buy a product that was 10/100 only if I needed a simple connection, but if I bought this set I would have expected it to have a 10/100/1000 port as that’s the only way to achieve the 500Mbps they claim.

Now that the rant is over here is what I found from my testing. First off if you have a powerline set from another company this will not work in unison. Also do not plug them into a surge protector or a power strip. They must be plugged directly into a wall socket.

I ran my bandwidth testing with an application called “BTest”. I managed to get a pretty steady 45Mbps connection sending and receiving on these devices. Also I would like to not that it was extremely steady and smooth. I had virtually no drops or sags in the transition or receiving of data. Also that connection held at those speeds as I moved throughout the house.

Overall I would recommend these as I really found them to be great little powerline adapters. But I still feel like they are misleading the consumer by claiming these can do something they don’t even have the hardware to support. If you are looking for a connection for a PC to do a little internet surfing and browsing, then pick these up. If you want something a little faster then look elsewhere.

1 out of 5 eggsQuick Setup, Trips Circuit Breaker

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-PA4010KIT High-speed AV500 Nano Powerline Adapter Starter Kit, up to 500Mbps

Pros: I purchased the TP-WPA4220KIT due to the high rating. The installation was very quick and painless, just plug it in to each outlet and router and you're done.

Cons: The device continuously tripped my circuit breaker, literally leaving me in the dark.

Other Thoughts: After much research, I learned that it's may be due to the arc (breaker) faults on high frequencies, and these devices transmits data on the powerline at high frequencies.

I did find a suggestion that HomePlug AV2 supported devices with a ground plug may fair better.

I can not recommend this device and will be returning it.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk-DON'T BUY

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-PA4010KIT High-speed AV500 Nano Powerline Adapter Starter Kit, up to 500Mbps

Pros: less expensive than wifi.

Cons: Link speed was 50 Mbps when both adapters plugged into the same outlet. When plugged into an outlet 15 feet away, speed dropped to 15 Mbps. At 30 feet (where i need to use it) speed had dropped to 1 Mbps. TP-LINK tech support person essentially told me I was out of luck!

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

Thank you for your review.

Even though the outlets may only be 15 or 30 feet away, the wires in the wall may be looping a lot longer than that.

These long distances could cause the signal to degrade and slow down the connection.

One suggestion to look at if you haven't already is to make sure that both devices are plugged in with the same orientation.

Either they're both facing up, or both facing down. This is mostly due to the polorization which could cause some slowness in the network.

If you still have issues or concerns then feel free to contact our 24 hour techncial support team.

Best Regards!

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect for my needs

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-PA4010KIT High-speed AV500 Nano Powerline Adapter Starter Kit, up to 500Mbps

Pros: Easy to use: Plugged it in to Router and Computer, pressed the button on each device and BAM! My wife could do this... that's saying something.
Great Speed: I am experiencing the same transfer rates over this device I receive on my Computer plugged straight into the router.

Cons: None so far.

1 out of 5 eggsflakey from the start

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-PA4010KIT High-speed AV500 Nano Powerline Adapter Starter Kit, up to 500Mbps

Pros: Well it was easy to set up and it worked fine for ten minutes. It came with patch cables, we swapped them to make sure they were good but the problem persisted.

Cons: It started to get flaky and dropped connections every ten minutes or so. After one day it was completely dead.

Other Thoughts: New Egg issued an RMA right away and I'm in the process of getting a refund. I like New Egg, their service is great but once in a while you just get some bad gear...

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Device

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-PA4010KIT High-speed AV500 Nano Powerline Adapter Starter Kit, up to 500Mbps

Pros: Fast
Small
Compact
Does as advertised
Has nice software to update firmware

Cons: Might not operate at full capacity if you plug it in via a power strip or some old power lines. Works great in my house and provides a reliable connection.

Price is steep unless on sale.

Other Thoughts: At first I would lose connection every once and a while, but then I updated the firmware and it works flawlessly. It's just like if I would have an Ethernet cable running through the walls.
