5 out of 5 eggsBest Networking Solution When Wi-Fi Isn't Available

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-PA4010KIT High-speed AV500 Nano Powerline Adapter Starter Kit, up to 500Mbps

Pros: This powerline performed well while I tested it, on par with a direct wired connection to the router.

Cons: For best performance results, it needs to be connected directly to the wall outlet and not to a power strip. It still will function in a power strip, but with reduced speeds and occasional connection issues. THis is not the adapters fault, however, as it is an unavoidable problem with the technology.

Other Thoughts: The powerline is extremely useful in areas where you Wi-Fi isn't an option. I use this one primarily to run a wired connection to the far side of my house where there is a lot of Wi-Fi interference. I then have it connected to a simple switch, and it provides a wired Internet connection to my PC, TV and Xbox. I had a long wire running down the hallway for this before, and I haven't seen any drop in performance from doing this.

Comparatively to Wi-Fi, performance is much higher than any Wi-Fi tests I have performed.

4 out of 5 eggsTechnology is getting better and is becoming a viable option!

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-PA4010KIT High-speed AV500 Nano Powerline Adapter Starter Kit, up to 500Mbps

Pros: I compared the AV500 Nano to the earlier version (with a lower speed) the AV200 Nano. The unit is really small and compact. Makes it easy if you are using Network devices in your home such as ROKUs or Ethernet TVs. Wi-Fi is good but sometimes it just can’t reach well to certain places of the home. This device lets you get around that hurdle for sure.

When comparing the AV500 to its earlier model the AV200 you can clearly see that the degradation when switching from one power line to another is still present but is not as bad as it used to be. This technology is continuing to improve and although it will not replace Wi-Fi it does give you a nice alternative.

TP-LINK AV200 Nano (South West side upstairs bedroom on a different line)

- Upload: 29.62

Cons: Still has a big performance hit when switching from one power line to another. If both units are on the same powerline there is virtually no performance hit. Technology is definitely getting better!

Other Thoughts: I have a TV on the other end of my home upstairs that uses a ROKU on the Wi-Fi. At times it pixelates because of the distance. This is a good alternative to solving that issue if you have a similar problem.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent Product

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-PA4010KIT High-speed AV500 Nano Powerline Adapter Starter Kit, up to 500Mbps

Pros: Works as promised
Greatly improves latency
Good alternative to wireless
Easy setup

Cons: Can't be used with power strip

Other Thoughts: I highly recommend this to anyone who has a desktop for gaming but doesn't have the ability to run Ethernet cables to their PC. I had been having problems with streaming things to my TV via wifi and as soon as I plugged in the power line adapter I saw a vast, instant improvement

3 out of 5 eggsMediocre Nano Networking

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-PA4010KIT High-speed AV500 Nano Powerline Adapter Starter Kit, up to 500Mbps

Pros: Very small, they truly deserve their title of being a Nano powerline Kit
Completely plug and play, worked within seconds of plugging everything in
Fairly decent design and build quality
Aesthetically pleasing since the units blend into the outlet
The LED indicator lights are fairly subtle and not overly obnoxious in terms of brightness
Features 128-bit encryption and the ability to add more powerline units
Units remained roughly lukewarm during all use and cooled slightly at idle
Quick start guide was brief and helpful

Wired Connection (10 Feet)
• Server (100MB File Transfer): Read = 10.89 MB/s, Write = 9.8 MB/s
• Internet Speed Test: Ping = 13 ms, Read = 94.42 Mbps, Write = 23.79 Mbps

Wired Connection (30 Feet)
• Server (100MB File Transfer): Read = 1.00 MB/s, Write = 1.99 MB/s
• Internet Speed Test: Ping = 13 ms, Read = 12.10 Mbps, Write = 18.07 Mbps

Power Consumption
• Idle: 1.6 Watts
• Load: 1.8 Watts

Cons: Only features a 10/100 Ethernet port

As others have noted the performance of the device is underwhelming despite the advertised claims. This just gets worse the father away the device is from the other powerline adapter as shown by the benchmarks above.

The included software doesn’t really do much. It doesn’t show any information on connection speed and the firmware update section requires you to go find the firmware instead of checking automatically.

Other Thoughts: To sum things up, this product works fairly well at close distances with good enough speed to rival a cat5 10/100 wired connection but at greater distances it suffers. In a two story house, I wouldn’t recommend this unless used on the same floor due to a good Wireless-AC connection being able to match or beat it in whole home coverage. Despite its sometimes slower speed at grander distances, it does deliver a more consistent experience over a wireless connection.

Server and Internet Speed Full Capacity: Wired Connection (1000 Mbps)
• Server (100MB File Transfer): Read = 113.53 MB/s, Write = 102.87 MB/s
• Internet Speed Test: Ping = 12 ms, Read = 211.07 Mbps, Write = 21.74 Mbps

*All tests were conducted three times to ensure accuracy and repeatability of results.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent product, deceptive advertising

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-PA4010KIT High-speed AV500 Nano Powerline Adapter Starter Kit, up to 500Mbps

Pros: Let's get the breathless advertising claims out of the way first. The AV500 does indeed have an internal chipset capable of 500Mbps. As many other reviewers note, the ethernet port itself only supports 100 Mbps transfers. TP-LINK has a half-baked excuse on their website that can be summarized as: Real-world speeds are always lower than maximum rates. Therefore we saved some money - and made the AV500 lower cost - by only including a 100Mbps port. More on this below.

That said, I actually do like the adapter. Setup is simple and you can indeed get network access throughout your house -- as long as neither end of the AV500 is plugged into a surge suppressor or otherwise filtered outlet. This is a simple, inexpensive way to obtain basic networking in areas where you do not have wireless coverage. Unlike wireless the signal is not affected by how many walls it goes through.

It even can give speeds adequate for web browsing, playing music, or OK quality video (15 Mbps) when plugged it to an extension cord running to the back yard near the BBQ and a cooler full of cold beverages. No, really, I was working that afternoon...

Cons: Transfer speeds are not great, 500 Mbps claims aside. Even at its best you probably do not want to rely on this adapter for large file transfers.

Using our network test equipment, I measured a sustained 75 Mbps speed when both adapters were plugged into the same outlet. Not a terribly useful test case, but it defines the absolute best you can obtain. Moving to other outlets on the same circuit I measured 60 - 65 Mbps. Speeds on outlets using other circuits varied from 25 - 50 Mbps depending on the length of the wiring runs. As noted above I obtained 15 Mbps speeds with the AV500 sending data 50 feet to the main circuit panel, across a different circuit, 70 feet to an outside outlet, then another 50 feet of extension cord to the back yard.

Other Thoughts: I can understand any aversion to purchasing the AV500 based on the TP-LINK's advertising claims that fall between misleading and frankly deceptive. If you are looking for a cheap way to expand your network - at least for temporary use - the AV500 fits the bill nicely.

Pros: These are very easy to setup.Plug them in and pair them up and you are good to go.I have four set up and with no problems on any of them.Nice thing is,no more wires running through the house.

Cons: Don't really have any cons. They do what they say they will do.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend these for anyone with more than one computer in the house or game consoles, smart tv's or whatever your using that needs internet access.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks ok, but not 500Mbps

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-PA4010KIT High-speed AV500 Nano Powerline Adapter Starter Kit, up to 500Mbps

Pros: They're small and work well.

Cons: The advertised speed is 500Mbps, but the port negotiation speed is only 100Mbps at the most.

Other Thoughts: I currently use the adapter kit to provide internet to one of my Raspberry Pis being used as a smart table. This allows me to eliminate an Ethernet cord leaving the table. Speeds and stability are as-expected (no connection or packet loss).

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-PA4010KIT High-speed AV500 Nano Powerline Adapter Starter Kit, up to 500Mbps

Pros: - Incredibly easy to setup. If it takes you more than a minute to unpack these adapters and get them plugged in, there's a problem!
- Depending on where I tested them I saw speeds ranging between 42-81Mbps. (42 being the furthest I could run the adapters and 81Mbps one room over.)
- 2 solid weeks of testing and streaming hd movies over Netflix with all but a minor hiccup or two in the form of a brief disconnect.

I want to note that I got to test a different pair of power line adapters a few years ago and the reliability of the connection is definitely improved with this model.

Cons: - While these do say “up to 500Mbps” in the description, if you read the specifications tab you'll see that the adapters come with 10/100 ports. This means the best speed you'll see is 100Mbps. I find this misleading enough to deduct half an egg.

Other Thoughts: There really isn't a lot to say about a product like this. They're far more convenient than running cat-5 through your house to a non-wifi device. In my case my media player was wireless capable however it's at the furthest end of the house from my router. While the signal was mediocre on a good day, I would find movies buffering any time someone used their cell phone or laptop over the wireless. That's no longer an issue.
They work; they work well. If you're looking for an easy fix for your networking needs and wireless isn't an option then you found it.
