5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product, Great Price, Easy Setup and Phenomenal Performance

This review is from: TP-LINK Archer C7 Wireless AC1750 Dual Band Gigabit Router, 450Mbps on 2.4GHz + 1300Mbps on 5Ghz, 2 USB Ports, IPv6, Guest Network

Pros: I have never written a review before for any product. This product could be the best I've ever purchased. It took me less than 10 minutes to set up. I had a newer wireless-n router that gave me a weak signal in the upstairs bedrooms of my 2-story house. Also, the signal was sporadic in the 1st story in some rooms and my apple devices often had difficulty connecting to the network.

This router completely blew me away. I have 100 mbps internet service. In all rooms of the 1st story I am getting 90+ mbps on the both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands and 60-70 mbps in the 2nd story bedrooms. No problems with my apple devices. I highly recommend this router. It's a great router at a great price.

5 out of 5 eggsBetter UI than other DD-WRT routers that I've used

This review is from: TP-LINK Archer C7 Wireless AC1750 Dual Band Gigabit Router, 450Mbps on 2.4GHz + 1300Mbps on 5Ghz, 2 USB Ports, IPv6, Guest Network

Pros: Nice web UI that seems more responsive that the router I replaced. Both 5G and older bands separately accessible.

Cons: The 5G has a lower signal strength than the other channel, but I don't know if thats an issue with the router or 5G itself. I have not been able to get Mac OS 10.4 to connect wirelessly, but haven't spent any time to figure out if that's a router, Airport card, or OS X issue.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat router, easy install

This review is from: TP-LINK Archer C7 Wireless AC1750 Dual Band Gigabit Router, 450Mbps on 2.4GHz + 1300Mbps on 5Ghz, 2 USB Ports, IPv6, Guest Network

Pros: Very fast with the right adapter
Very simple and easy to configure

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I have this tied to a Asus AC1300 wifi adapter and it is flying. I'm getting roughly 6mbs download on wifi, and 45 mbs download on direct LAN

4 out of 5 eggsGreat speed, but not too thrilled with the firmware UI. Under $100 for this modem is a great deal

This review is from: TP-LINK Archer C7 Wireless AC1750 Dual Band Gigabit Router, 450Mbps on 2.4GHz + 1300Mbps on 5Ghz, 2 USB Ports, IPv6, Guest Network

Pros: Easy to install and get running with great AC speeds. Replaces an ASUS N modem, which was slower but did have a more more polished firmware interface

Cons: Port forwarding limited to less ports than my old ASUS router, so hard to set up the grandson's gaming ports. Parental controls setup not as user friendly as with ASUS firmware.

Other Thoughts: NewEgg site says this router supports DD-WRT, but could use help getting it installed. Don't want to brick my new router just because I don't like the user interface to the stock firmware.

3 out of 5 eggsDo not buy if you run an OpenVPN server

This review is from: TP-LINK Archer C7 Wireless AC1750 Dual Band Gigabit Router, 450Mbps on 2.4GHz + 1300Mbps on 5Ghz, 2 USB Ports, IPv6, Guest Network

Pros: Easy to set up, good range, good speed.

Cons: Does not have the ability to set a WINS server in the DHCP configuration. This means that if you use OpenVPN, you won't be able to get hostname resolution working across the VPN, because the local clients won't know where the WINS server is. I emailed tech support about this issue, and the response I got was basically "It's not supported, good luck!" I tried setting the VPN/WINS server as a DNS server in the router, but that didn't work. Hostname resolution was working just fine with my old Netgear WNR3500L and Asus RT-N53 routers, both of which could set the WINS server.

Other Thoughts: Yes, Tomato or other aftermarket firmware would probably fix this issue, but in the process you lose the hardware NAT capabilities and the warranty. I'm in the process of returning this router to replace it, probably with an Asus RT-AC66U, which does support setting a WINS server.

4 out of 5 eggsGood router, tech support is late 80's/early 90's style awful

This review is from: TP-LINK Archer C7 Wireless AC1750 Dual Band Gigabit Router, 450Mbps on 2.4GHz + 1300Mbps on 5Ghz, 2 USB Ports, IPv6, Guest Network

Pros: The router itself is great. Does everything it's supposed to and does it well. Easy to set up, etc, etc, etc.

Cons: The cons are just with TP-Link's tech support. They are late 80's/early 90's style bad. What I mean is they are staffed by, let's just say, non-native English speakers operating from "choose a #" type scripts/macros. I put in a ticket about an issue, and they responded with an obvious boilerplate that had nothing to do with my problem, because they either didn't read my detailed message, skimmed it, or (more likely) didn't truly understand it due to language barriers.

I get it, things are made in Asia. It's fine. Just hire native speakers English for support when dealing with English-speaking countries (And native German, French, Italian, you name it, for those countries too). :(

Other Thoughts: I still recommend this router. Value is very good, and it's definitely a good unit. But expect to be more or less on your own for support.

(And no, my issue isn't a "dumb end user" thing; I'm a very experienced user. The problem is a blatant bug in the Tether app that you can use to configure and manage the router. It doesn't accept admin passwords that contain special characters - but the router's firmware and web config app do.)
