1 out of 5 eggsThink twice

Pros: Configurable port to allow a second redundant/fail-over/load balanced WAN port.
Some other Features as well

Cons: Unstable...
We installed this router July 20,2015 and since have had no more the 11 consecutive days of up time. On Avg. however it requires a reboot everyday. Sometimes will make it to 2 days. While Wired LAN connectivity is fine - since implementing this router The WiFi will drop completely. Both Wired and WiFi (wifi because there is no connection at all)- lose all access to the WAN (internet). When the problems are present - the router will not respond to pings (from wired connections) and cannot be accessed with Telnet or HTML.
After trying several different things on my own, I connected the manufactures support about a month ago. It has been a painful experience - with long periods of nothing from them then they will respond with an excuses of why it has taken them so long to reply - national holiday, out of town for a business trip, "waiting your (my) response" - when I responded the same day. Then when they do respond - it is to ask the some question that they have already asked. I have provided them with laborious details about our network and the setup.

The workaround to the issue is to simply reboot the router - only the router, daily at times. And now they have disowned the problem.

Other Thoughts: Our environment is not complex - single subnet.
Would like to use the multiple SSID feature of this router to establish an isolated WiFi network but that is disabled in an effort to resolve this issue.
We do have a few pin holes in the firewall.
But not using the VPN features.
We are also NOT using the routers DHCP service.
The reason we looked at this router was for its ability to have the second WAN link which we wanted to increase the reliability of the internet service. Oddly to our knowledge neither of the ISPs have drop service since we implemented this router.. and when the router is acting up - we can bypass it going directly to each ISP's gateway and have connectivity.

2 out of 5 eggsWorks great until the WiFi dies

Pros: Works well for business, plenty of features

Cons: WiFi started to get flakey on my unit, full signal but no data on wifi but wired connections still fine. It became more constant in the last few weeks so I created a ticket. This is where the plot falls apart.
They started with all the standard stuff one would always try, firmware update, not running hot, PSU, reset and setup again etc along with some simple questions about the setup and failure mode.
Ultimately they do not want to replace it and suggested this instead -
Many thanks for your reply.
Sorry for the inconvenice caused.
I have consulted our engineer and we are not sure whether it will be ok if you got a replacement.
Therefore, we would like to recommend you buy a wireless access point to boost your wifi signal and improve the stability, such as TL-WA901ND.

And then -
Really sorry for the inconvenience caused.
If we can help you out, we really want to try our best to help you out.
At the same time, I do apologize for my mistake.
The wireless of the TL-ER604W is unstable so the the wifi comes from the TL-WA901ND is still unstable if we configure the TL-WA901ND as a repeater.
As we know, the wired network is still stable when the wifi drops off.
Therefore, at present, the better solution for you is to buy a wireless access point to set is up as an access point to turn the stable wired internet into wireless network.
Sorry for the inconevenice caused again.
we will be very appreciate it if you could try my suggestion.

Is this a suitable suggestion ??? I think not.

3 out of 5 eggsLooking for improvement

Pros: Stable LAN speed throughput.

Cons: Unreliable WiFi connection. I have to reboot router every three days in order to get WiFi going again. This doesn't happen with hardwired connection. When I woke up this morning, no WiFi signal, no connection through hardwired to the router, and I end up power cycled the whole router. Not happy about this situation. Already upgraded to the latest version of firmware when I got it. Plan to travel outside of country for more than 3 months with VPN connection, but I wouldn't be able to reboot the router.

Other Thoughts: Wish there is a scheduled reboot option on their admin page.

5 out of 5 eggsSecure and stable connection w/VPN

Pros: I bought this router primarily to secure my network through a VPN service provider, not for site-to-site although I hear that it works fine. The other thing about this router is that it has network protection, detection, and defense settings, in particular against ARP spoof and DoS attacks, a main concern of mine.

Cons: With my VPN service provider, I am not allowed to connect at anything greater than simple PPTP, which is reasonably secure but not terribly sophisticated either. I can't really blame this router for that though; I guess it all depends on what your VPN provider you use.

Other Thoughts: This product only came with a cat5 cable (no surprise there) but you need at least cat5e or better to get gigabit speeds on your LAN. The WLAN signal strength is really good at this price, two large antennas; I'd rather have a strong connection to my devices than faster internet speeds.

5 out of 5 eggsIt works fine!

Pros: No cons at all! Plug and update the firmware! No drops what so ever!
Re config it and it's holding out just fine. Solid and heavy and not a cheap product. Want the best then get the best! want something that will break buy a router for $20 bucks then.

Cons: None. It's fine! Just update the firmware and sit back and Re config it

Other Thoughts: YUP! when you get the product just update the firmware First! plug the Ethernet cord in the computer and type the ip address of the router and update! Be careful not to unplug the router when updating it as you will brick it! when it's just wait 1 min or 2 before you power it off and back

1 out of 5 eggsVPN Doesn't allow same subnet

Pros: Can't list any pros yet since I bought this exclusively for VPN functionality and VPN is not working.

Cons: I've used Linksys/Cisco VPN routers for years and thought I'd give this TP-Link one a try. Bad move. I should have gone with the tried and true.

The problem: The PPTP/L2TP VPN server forces you to use a different subnet for VPN clients which means even if you can connect to your remote LAN over VPN you can't access devices on the remote LAN.

This limitation is written up in numerous TP-Link forums and other reseller reviews and some people have made it work by editing routing tables and assigning static routes on the client (windows) but that doesn't work if you want to connect to this using devices such as phones or tablets.

So far no official answers from TP-Link that I can find. I also opened a support case with TP-Link and haven't heard back. I will update this review if/when I do hear from them.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

Thank you for taking the time to review our Router.

The majority of VPN connections will make you use two different non conflicting subnets - this is usually to prevent conflicts among the two LANs.

Even though you are on two different subnets you can still access the remote devices. There may be some issues with access shared folders as they use DNS to traverse the VPN, but this is still possible with more configuration on the VPN.

Creating Static Routes will not be necessary and the Routers will be smart enought to route from Lan to Lan.

Here is a a FAQ for more information on creating a PPTP connection:

1 out of 5 eggsWorst Tech support ever!

Pros: Works sometimes!

Cons: I am a CCNA, I have configured many VPN routers, from Cisco, and Netgear. I decided to give TP-Link a try because of my client's budget, but the VPN does not work. I tried calling tech support several times, but the people who answer the phones, have no idea how to configure the router! Most times, no one even answers the calls. Stay away!

4 out of 5 eggsGood

Pros: It just works

Cons: Load Balancing is not perfect, but I amy not have the settings right yet
No good way to monitor throughput

Other Thoughts: I have never rebooted the router in over a month, I have 2 low quality internet conncections, and this router keeps me connected 97% of the time. I occasionally have to refresh a page when one connection drops, or lags, but it is working.

I would like more control over the load balancing, and more info on the data sent through easch wan port, but so far it is working as advertised.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Router Ever

Pros: I installed this router 4 months ago and I haven't had to reset it once. Quelled all the complaints from my family that the wireless was slow or not working.

Cons: A little difficult to configure the software. The basic stuff was easy but setting up port forwarding was a little cryptic

Other Thoughts: I own a IT consulting business. I will be buying these routers from now on for my clients.
