5 out of 5 eggsThis was easy to set up.

Pros: Setup was simple and the instructions were clear. I would definitely recommend this product to others.

Cons: I haven't encountered any problems, yet. I will report back if anything comes up.

4 out of 5 eggsThis works great!!

Pros: Small, works, Easy to set up...

Cons: Did not work with a hidden wireless signal

Other Thoughts: Once I allowed my wireless to be open it worked great. I didn't want my wireless signal advertised as that's the first character, but if you're not super conscientious of security this works great. All in all I'd recommend it to friends, which says a lot.

5 out of 5 eggsSurprise - it works great!

Pros: I had a wi-fi coverage issue because I have to use a Centurylink DSL router/wi-fi unit which has notoriously weak wi-fi. I was triggered to buy a cheap, compact extender by a NewEgg email with discount offer on a different brand of extender. Feedback on the offered item was not good, so I bought this one based on price and customer feedback. For the price, I was expecting problems. My Surprise: as I have WPS in the router, all I had to do was plug the extender into the wall power, push the WPS "send" on the router, and push the WPS "receive" on the extender. The units synched immediately. The extender operates as described. My extended wi-fi connections now operate 2- 3 times as fast as before. A complete success; best $20 I ever spent on computer hardware. Here's hoping that it keeps working.

Cons: Just installed; so far, so good. No cons (yet).

Other Thoughts: With the reservation that a $20 extender may not work for ever, I would solidly recommend this unit. I was going to buy a 2nd unit for a friend until I discovered that he had previously bought another extender .

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Extender

Pros: It was very easy to set up. You just log in to it (wirelessly or wired), connect it to your hotspot through the simple GUI, and then decide whether you want to create a new hotspot name or use the existing one. Speeds are great for a range extender. I was getting over 23 Mbps down from my ISP (and only have a top speed of 40) which is more than acceptable for the vast majority of network tasks. The other thing about range extenders is they usually end up in a fairly visible spot in the middle of the house, so it’s nice that this plugs directly into a wall power outlet so you can easily hide it. It has an Ethernet port at the bottom for wired connections, which is handy if you have a network device that can’t use wireless, or works poorly with a wireless connection.
At the price Newegg sells this thing for, it’s a steal. So far, this extender is performing as well as extenders I have purchased at 5x the price.

Cons: Honestly, nothing so far!

Other Thoughts: I tested this under the most demanding conditions I could, streaming 1080p video real-time. I have a HTPC that streams HD video, both from a Plex server, and from a HDHomeRun prime, which serves up HD TV from my cable provider (by using a cable card). It is about 50 feet from my router with at least two walls in between. The connection is rock solid. I am using the wired output from the extender to power the HTPC, and so far zero glitches/dropouts/etc. I am very impressed indeed, as few extenders could handle that amount of real-time data without hiccups.
This is the best TPLink extender I have used, much more reliable than other models, with excellent throughput and reliability.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic Extender

Pros: - Cheap
- Does as advertised

Cons: -

Other Thoughts: - Great product, easy setup. Slight con, not worth docking an egg: my kid unplugged it, had to reconfigure.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat, inexpensive Wi-Fi extender.

Pros: - Item arrived from newegg very quickly and was well packed.
- The TP-Link TL-WA850RE Range Extender connects to your existing Wi-Fi and then rebroadcasts your Wi-Fi signal allowing you to extend your Wi-Fi coverage much further.
- Placed in a right place around your home/apartment, this device can significantly extend your Wi-Fi coverage area.
- A single Ethernet port provides wired internet to a device that is not easily reached by wires. The extender worked well with my old bluray player that is in a room not wired for Ethernet.
- The range extender can rebroadcast the signal with your Wi-Fi’s SSID or you can choose to create a separate SSID.
- Set up is very easy. The setup page has a column on the right that explains every acronym that is shown on the page. This is very useful for people who are beginners at networking.
- 2 year warranty.
- Web based management.

Cons: - The device will not detect or rebroadcast signals ac signals (n only). For some strange reason my old Verizon FIOS g only router refuses to work with this extender.
- During setup, the user is not prompted to switch device’s login credentials from username/password of “admin” “admin”. Default device login credentials, if left unchanged, can lead to security issues.
- The extender is running newest firmware but I could not get the “TP-Link Tether” app work on my iPhone even though the documentation states the app is supported.

Other Thoughts: - I have used the TP-Link TL-WA850RE v1.2 Range Extender for about a month now. I used “Kasa” mobile app (which I also use to control my TP-Link smart plug) to set up the extender. Once I plugged in the extender to the power, I then connected to a temporary WI-FI access point created by extender’s setup process, I then picked my Wi-Fi network (2.4 GHZ band only) I wanted to extend, I typed in my Wi-Fi credentials and that was it for setup. I keep the device in my garage, lugged into an outlet right by the door. This way my Wi-Fi extends all the way to the road. There are no more dead spots on my driveway.
- The combination of price, ease of setup and benefits it provides, makes this device an obvious choice for those wishing to extend the coverage of their existing Wi-Fi network.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat easy way to extend wifi range

Pros: Easy to setup, works well, fast for what it is.

Not a lot to say, it does what it's supposed to do at a price point that is very competitive with a 2 year warranty to provide peace of mind.
If you need 802.11ac speeds you have to spend a lot more, but short of online competitive gaming you really don't. Streaming HD video over this works just fine, which is probably the most taxing thing most people ever do.

Cons: Doesn't support latest 802.11ac standards. Increased latency means it isn't the best thing for competitive online gaming.

Included ethernet cable is 3ft shorter than I think it should be.

Other Thoughts: Basically the way this device works is really simple. You plug it into an outlet within' range of your wifi and it extends that range. You have to connect it to the wifi router of course, but this is made very easy to do.

Unit has an Ethernet port built in! This is great!

Note: This device should be plugged directly into the outlet, NOT a power strip!
Now, I think this recommendation is more for the powerline models, since that's literally transferring your network traffic over the power lines in your house. But it could be that it is also recommended for this model, though I'm not sure why. Could be something as simple as antenna orientation.

5 out of 5 eggsNice product

Pros: Range and speed are really good. Have not had a signal drop since I set it up 3 weeks ago. Copies all the settings from your wireless router so setup is easy. Has an Ethernet plug on the bottom that I hooked to my entertainment computer and the internet through it is rock solid.

Cons: Was not free???

Other Thoughts: If your wireless internet signal is not covering your house buy one of these. You will not be sorry!

5 out of 5 eggsDon't spend more money on other boosters

Pros: Easy install, reliable service and very reasonable purchase price

Cons: I can't find fault with this unit

Other Thoughts: I had a wifi extender for approximately 18 months that cost 3 times as much and continually needed resetting (unplugging to reset). I've had this unit for over two months and haven't touched since I installed it. My recreation area is in the basement and this unit does a great job with Netflix and Chromecast apps. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks fantastic, but where is the security?

Pros: I am very impressed! Now it may be simply because this is my third try with a TP Link range extender that I am so impressed. I tried their low end 150Mbps model and it kept cutting out, and I tried a model very similar to this one. The TL-WA854RE which I believe the only difference is it does not have the Ethernet Port.

I am very grateful for the Ethernet Port! I was able to plug in my Pioneer receiver and now I can use our iPads as remote controls for it! (Held off on buying a well over $100 wireless dongle to make this happen)

Not only was the range impressive, the connection has been stable and strong for the last few days! I am confident it will remain that way! I would like to say it is extremely easy to use, but being my third time round with one of these, one could say that I have gotten familiar with the way it works is all!

Had this thing not had a default user name and password of admin, I would say this is PERFECT! It works perfect, functions like it supposed to and out performs the other two TP Link extenders I’ve tried by far! Lucky, you can change it if you know how, but you got to make the effort. If you do not, then your network can be hacked. I gave a speedtest on my iPad and where I would have speeds cut in half, were still hitting max. Where I couldn’t sit before were still hitting max. Too cold outside to take a field trip to see just how far I could go. I’m impressed it’s working like I wanted in the first place! I am very impressed because I did not get this on my old cable modem with the nighthawk router that prices at 300 bucks or a dual band TP-Link router. The new xfinity cable modem and this extender gives me 185Mbps everywhere in the house! 13 to 14ms on the ping and 12 on the upload. Consistent all the way around! I’d love to give it five stars, but that security flaw just hits my stomach hard! For that oversight, I must take a star. Even if I am able to protect myself, I just cringe at all the unprotected extenders out there!

Cons: The wee ity bity, tinsy winsy, tiny winy, wittle Ethernet cord that came with it is my first con with this. It is working as one expects it would once you get one that reaches where you want it. (Unless 3 and a half feet is long enough for you. Please remember that the device performs best when plugged into a wall socket. It is not recommended to plug into a power strip. I am certain I read that somewhere!)

The biggest con is the horrible and I do mean HORRIBLE security on this! The change the user name and password should be the first step requested in the automated setup process that I went through from the wegGUI. If you follow the steps, you leave your extender vulnerable to hacking, and to protect yourself may require extra steps. Most users will not take these steps. Especially if they choose the WPS push button setup method! If you want to make sure your protected, read my other thoughts as to how and why. While TP Link does great with their products for the most part, they should jump on this and make it their highest priority. Just like the routers are doing these days, you should be supplying random passwords with each unit so users can still hit their WPS buttons and have their easy install. Go through the webGUI’s automated setup without having that fear of someone getting into their network later if they fail to find that password change option! In fact, I just picked up a TP-Link TL-WDR3600 router and I see the precautions were taken there! Why your routers, but not your extenders? Are you unaware of the security flaw? I would find that hard to believe!

Other Thoughts: The previous extenders I’ve tried have been tried on multiple routers. This one was only tried on the Comcast Xfinity one. They play SO very well together! I used the webGUI to set the extender up and BAMN. That was it. Selected the network, put in the password and that was it! It disappeared and I placed it in the other room to see how it would work. I had no problems except I was not comfortable with the default user name and password.

It was hackable. And I don’t mean “Get this guy to the pentagon” type hack. The scary hackers with nothing better to do than drive around and try to hack into people’s unsecure networks kind of hack. I knew from previous setups that I was able to change the user name and password from admin. However, once you set it up, it’s not easy to get back into it. And I already set it up in the other room. Lucky for me, the Comcast router does a fantastic job giving the information you need! I did my 10.0.0.1 to access the webGUI and needed to put in admin and the password I set for our router, selected view connected devices and seen the TL-WA850RE and knew that was the extender. I clicked on it and it showed the IP address it was on! Typed that in and I was back in the webGUI for the extender and was able to change the user name and password! Unlike the router where I was only able to change the password!

You may not have to do this and can get away with tplinkextender.net if you still have the lan cord plugged directly into a computer or laptop. Unless you do the setup manually, and you know what the link of the extender will be, you may have to check your router to see what IP was assigned to the extender for you to access it once again. Why is this important? It is about as difficult as checking all the windows in your house for an unlocked one as it is to guess the IP your extender may be on. If they guess it and you didn’t change that user name and password, they can get your password for your main router. Your MAC address, everything! You do NOT want a stranger having this kind of access to your network! Protect yourselves!

If your home ip is 192.168.0.1 is your extender IP less than 50 digits away? Home ip 192.168.1.1? 10.0.0.1? A little thought can show you how easy it may be to hack this if the user name and pass is not changed to something more secure. A majority of the users that check into this will see just how easy it is and think of all those reports of folks hacking into those nanny cams. It’s not that they are extremely smart, they just know how weak the security is and they take advantage of it!
