5 out of 5 eggsConvenient wireless connection

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR710N 150Mbps Wireless N Mini Pocket Router

Pros: Nice price and super easy to use. A solution to save data use on cellular bill or when data networking isn't available for portable devices. Just plugged into Ethernet and now connecting multiple data devices simultaneously without going through cellular. And, when it's not in use just unplug to reduce wifi levels or wifi security -- I prefer to use LAN/Ethernet lines first and wifi when it's the only option.

Cons: The preset password was a little hard to find.

Other Thoughts: Wanted this more than a year ago but had to wait 'til wife started complaining about her cellular data bill and subsequent outages or snail slow connections before she could see the necessity of it.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible Support, couldn't get to work

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR710N 150Mbps Wireless N Mini Pocket Router

Pros: self-contained, small, and in theory, exactly what I would need to share a single connection at a hotel.

Cons: Horrible tech support and did not work in hilton.

Other Thoughts: I travel weekly to a Embassy Suites. They provide a SSID of hhonors, which I have access to through my honors club. One of my work laptops is limited to a single url to connect for remote access, an d since hilton requires a signon page when you first connect, I cannot use their service. I think their service is provided by AT&T (as I also see attwifi with similar mac addresses).

I need wisp mode, as they do not provide me a cable connection. At home, this device works fine. At the hotel, it does not see their ssid's (although all my devices do) and when it does, it almost immediately disappears. I could not even use client mode to connect.

I called their "tech support line" (which by far was the worst support line I have ever called). After a quick "press one for wireless", it goes into a 2 minute music, then a messageto press one to continue to hold or you will be disconnected. I ended up hitting 1 about 6 times to stay on, then got a girl who had no idea of what wisp was. She kept telling me I needed to use client mode, even though all my devices had wifi cards. I tried and it still couldn't stay connected. After 15 minutes of explaining why I needed to use wisp, I finally realized that she had no clue of what she was talking about. I hung up and will be returning this to newegg.

This may work for some people (I bought it because of all the positive reviews) but unless this one is faulty, I cannot believe anyone could use this reliably in a hotel. And based on my call to tech support, I don't know if I would ever recommend a TP-Link product to anyone.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat pocket router

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR710N 150Mbps Wireless N Mini Pocket Router

Pros: small, fast, no separate power adapter, USB port to charge something in a pinch, two ethernet ports - both of which work if WAN not in use (e.g. in case of WiFi repeater or client modes). Love the tplinklogin.net resolution to router. Easy configuration in every mode. Available WiFi can be surveyed.

Cons: Takes forever to boot - sometimes around 5 minutes to start repeating WiFi traffic. In WiFi Repeater mode every now and then I had to reboot it because the connected devices could not resolve DNS. This was not a problem with Client mode. Not sure what the problem could have been. Still - it does a lot for $30 so not knocking off the egg

3 out of 5 eggsTP-Link WR710N Travel Router

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR710N 150Mbps Wireless N Mini Pocket Router

Pros: Worked well with factory defaults and the additional USB port to charge my phone would have been very useful

Cons: TI already have a WR700, which has worked well for over a year. I bought this newer model as it was on sale for $29.99 and included a USB port that could charge my phone. In hotels, that is often a benefit! Sadly, this until only worked using the factory defaults for LAN IP, SSID, and wireless key, which are conveniently on the label. When I changed the LAN IP (not subnet), wireless SSID, and WPA2 key, it would NOT NOT NOT remember them when I unplugged the unit! Very strange. I did a complete hard reset with the reset button, tried again, same behavior. I downloaded the latest firmware from TP-LINK USA website, ref lashed the unit, reset the unit and set it into router mode, assigned my LAN/SSID/WPA2 key....worked like a champ - success??? Unplugged, replugged - still worked - changed over to ACCESS POINT - everything gone and start all over again. Changed back to ROUTER mode,,, you guessed it, all gone.
So - I'l back to traveling with the WR700N which I really like.

If you are happy with factory defaults, and never need to switch operating mode, then I think this is a great little unit, especially when 2-pin power outlets are at a premium in a hotel abroad. This could have really done the job for me. I'm guessing my problems were firmware related and perhaps if TP-LINK updated the firmware, I'll try again. For now, it's NewEgg RMA time and paying for return shipping sadly.

Other Thoughts: I like the TP-LINK firmware and interface, lots of flexibility and control and onscreen help (but can add confusion to the unfamiliar) and older WR700N has been great - reliable, secure and good range. New firmware would make this WR710N a peach for me and I've not experienced the problems other's seem to have had.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR710N 150Mbps Wireless N Mini Pocket Router

Pros: Great Little Router. Comes with required cables, and the status lights are not to bright. Currently using it to "extend" the wifi signal to the second floor in my home.

Cons: Manual is not the greatest, but the vendor website and a quick search will get you the step-by-step you need for any of the router modes.

Other Thoughts: Have not used the USB port for storage yet, but the Router is displayed in Windows 7 as a device on the network. Did not use the enclosed Resource CD.
