Pros: Product works right out the box. Easy to set up. Def an improvement over wireless. Software is pretty good. Allows you to see the link speed of the units and lets you set up QoS. Product will be a good fit if you intend on just web surfing or doing some small to medium sized file transfers.

Cons: Did not get any decent speeds out of this product. Average speed is 90MBps with ping response times ranging from 40ms to 1ms. The intended use was to stream full 1080p content but play back was still choppy at times which became annoying even with QoS configured.

Some of the degradation of speed can come from the distance between the two Powerlines, how old the circuits in the home may be and if there is any other noise on the powerline from other electronic devices.

We have seen some Customers unplugging things in the house that use a lot of power to find that their speeds improe due to the lack up noise on the wire.

This is just one test that we recommend to see if noise is the cause.

Pros: This TP-Link adapter is quite useful for using on the edge or outside the range of a wireless AP. This adapter gives acceptable networking speeds while previous generations were way behind the times as far as connection speeds. The ability for this adapter to transmit over up to 300 meters, roughly 985 feet, of 110 wiring means that you can have a fairly large house and still have no problems using this from one corner of the house to the other. Of course you can also plug a switch into the remote end of the adapter to connect multiple devices. This would work well for an entertainment center, as you will most likely have game consoles and/or an HTPC for content. See other thoughts regarding power circuits.

Cons: Only real downside I can think of is that it must be plugged into an unprotected outlet (not into a surge protector). This is cumbersome without running a longer LAN cord so it can reach the AV equipment from the plug you are using. More often than not, you will find yourself using a duplex 110 plug and can plug the adapter into the bottom plug and the surge protector can plug into the top. Once it is setup though, it is in my opinion, a near flawless system.

Other Thoughts: This adapter is being used on an old 2006 Dell Latitude D620 that is kept out the in garage. While the 54G adapter in the computer still gets a signal it just does not have nearly as high of throughput at around 14Mbs vs ~200Mbs. This was a vast improvement over the AV200s that I have tested previously. The power line gives a much better connection especially with all the metal cabinets and other heavy equipment that kills the wireless signal.

Each adapter was on a different circuit but was still able to stream HD (720p) content from youtube no problem. I know this is not a high demand application but did not test 1080P as the laptop only has a 1280x800 screen and an old integrated into GPU. Like stated earlier, connection performs just fine for internet connection to a remote computer but depending how the circuits in your location are laid out, hopping across circuits may pose to be a problem especially if you are covering a long distance as well.

As others have stated, other electrical devices in use on the same circuit as these adapters can cause interference, greatly affecting the transfer speeds.

Overall for the price it does what I expected very well. I didn’t really check streaming HD content from one computer to another over the connection as it was used more as a way to get a solid connection for internet browsing, Youtube walk through videos streamed at 720P, and maybe iTunes streaming. Seemed to have less lag than the AV200s as well.

Pros: I was a bit skeptical at first, but after a few weeks I'm not sure how I was able to get by without these. Configuration was as easy as plugging them in. I did notice some connection issues at first but after swapping the breakers to the same end of the phase these things do quite well. I can transfer large files and stream movies over my LAN without a hitch.

Cons: They cover up one plug, but meh.

Pros: Well first of all, I am connected through Quest's DSL VIA a telephone line. Which kind of sucks because I am over 2,000ft from the the main hub. So there's quite of bit of bandwidth loss by the time the signal actually reaches me. With this product, not only did my day to day web surfing speed increase by about 250kb it also lowered my ping to 5ms. Where before it was 9ms, so a substantial gain to ms which is important when it comes to online gaming.

Cons: No CONS from me.

Other Thoughts: I would Definitely recommend this product to anyone that uses a phone line as means of connecting to the internet. I only had two of these so I really couldn't tell you the real benefits of having it in a home network.

Pros: I've been looking for a non-ethernet solution to my live video streaming requirements via WMC for some time now. Wireless N and even AC still results in choppy video at times and I don't want to run Cat5e/Cat6 cabling throughout the house.

I tried a previous low power kit from TP-Link and it didn't achieve anywhere close to the advertised speeds and also still got choppy playback.

I was finally able to test this unit with an Intel NUC as that is the platform I watch WMC CableCard content. The stream itself is 15-20Mbps but does not tolerate packet loss or poor signal well, which results in choppy playback or a complete stoppage of playback.

This unit handled the WMC stream perfectly and has become my solution for the bedroom HTPC connected to an Intel NUC.

Cons: Pretty large, most powerline units have gotten smaller. While this unit performs much better than the other TP-Link units I have, they are also about 50% larger (thickness from wall).

Other Thoughts: Still not as good as ethernet, but I think they are a viable option for anyone who needs something better and more reliable than wireless. Might also be good for people in areas with a lot of wireless traffic, like apartment buildings, condos, city living.

Pros: Faster than previous version and now has a gigabit Ethernet port.
Fully compatible with older TP-Link powerline adaptors including secure networking mode.
Smaller than previous AV500 models and do not block the other plug on the wall.

My home network consists of a wide variety of interconnected subnets, including a cable modem to the internet, multiple gigabit Ethernet switches, 802.11a/b/g/b/ac, and powerline Ethernet. I have been using TP-Link AV-500 (TL-PA411) devices to get network connectivity to multiple areas of the house where wireless connections are either weak or not usable at all, and I've been very happy with their performance. When I received this new AV600 kit, I knew I could immediately put the upgraded features to good use.

Before installing the new adapters, I re-tested the existing adapters. Then I installed a new adapter at the most remote computer I Have and tested a single AV600 on the existing network, and then I installed the second AV600 and tested performance between two of the new adapters.

In a nutshell, IT WORKED PERFECTLY!

AV500-AV500:
One way: up to 30mb/s (3.9 MB/s)
bi-directional: max of 2.4 MB/s in each direction

AV500 - AV600:
One way - up to 66 Mb/s (8.3 MB/s)
bi-directional: max of 2.5 MB/s each direction

AV600 - AV600:
One way - up to 95 MB/s (11.9 MB/s)
bi-directional: max of 3.5 MB/s each direction

So as you can see, even though the difference between the adapter ratings was only 20% difference, in some cases I rsaw over 300% the speed when using 2 of them, and over 200% the speed when using just 1.

In all cases, the transfers were both faster and more reliable than the wireless network connection available at that location in my house.

Cons: If there is any drawback to these devices, it is that 2-way bi-directional transfer rates are not very good with these adapters. I'm not sure from the tech specs, but they behave as if they are only half-duplex units so when there are 2-way transfers going on between adapters, they have to take turns instead of all going simultaneously. I have not tried more complicated scenarios than 2 computers transferring to and from each other, however I suspect that multiple computers trying to all stream large files or high bandwidth streams to each other all at once might see some slowdowns. There is no true substitute for a dedicated wired network with a good gigabit switch at its heart if you have multiple computers moving large files or streaming HD content around, but if that's what you need then you're not really looking for these powerline adapters anyhow.

Other Thoughts: So, a summary.

Unboxing was unsurprising. The product came as advertised in a smallish box without too much packaging waste. In the box were 2 adapters, 2 short Ethernet cables, a mini sized CD with some management software I didn't need to use, and a quick setup guide.

I should note that I've heard that the software can be very useful tweaking the settings of these adapters to get improved performance, to make firmware upgrades, or to fix performance problems. I've been so happy with them right out of the box that I just haven't tried out the software yet.

Installing it was very simple, and even though it was a different model from my other powerline adapters the normal process to add the adapters to the network worked just fine on the first try. My gigabit switch recognized the cable connection as gigabit speed too, a nice upgrade from the previous model which removes one potential transfer bottleneck.

As a standalone product, it has outstanding value and can be greatly superior to wireless especially in congested wireless areas or in large multi-story houses. Just remember that you can't use these on powerstrips and you get the best results on the same wiring circuit within the house. As an addition to an existing powerline network setup, it was fully compatible even in encrypted secure mode with my AV-500 (TL-PA411) devices, showing minor improvements across the board when transferring between dissimilar adapters and very large speed improvements between the two new AV-600s.

In short, I highly recommend these devices for either setting up a new powerline network, or adding devices to an existing compatible TP-Link powerline network. Just remember to keep them off the powerstrips and don't expect miracle 2-way transfer speeds especially if they're not on the same wiring circuit.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this item to extend my wireless network. I have the transmitter connected to an Apple Time Capsule inside my home. The receiver is located in my garage and connected to an Apple Express WI FI Extender. The transmitter and receiver connected to one another within seconds. Offers great expandability to those not wishing to run several hundred feet of CAT Cable. Approx distance between the receiver and transmitter is 150 feet. Works great!

Pros: This is simply one of the easiest; if not THE easiest, network devices I have ever had the opportunity to setup and use, (if we don’t include plugging an Ethernet cord directly between a router and PC, of course). Simply plug an Ethernet cable from your router into one of the adapters, plugging that adapter into a power outlet, then, do the same with the second adapter only connecting it to the device you want connected to your network.

My router is installed upstairs; wired connections include another router (used as a wireless access point), a PC, PlayStation 3, and a Vonage router. This, of course, requires running cables to at least two other rooms throughout the house. (The PlayStation 3 does have wireless capability, but it’s limited to 802.11g, which I’d rather not use unless absolutely necessary, so Ethernet cable is a must from it to my router). I suppose I should say this required running cables all over the house, because that is no longer the case when using the TP-Link AV600 Powerline Adapter!
I followed the advice found in the Quick Installation Guide, and refrained from plugging either adapter into a power strip with surge protection. So while I cannot say whether or not doing so will impede data transfer, I can say that using the wall sockets directly works very well.

All three rooms upstairs are on the same power circuit, (built in the early 70s, we have to be careful because it’s easy to overload. i.e. shutdown a PC or two before turning on a vacuum) and devices connected with this kit work very well in these rooms. I was a bit skeptical at first, thinking the wiring would cause noticeable data transfer rate slowdowns and/or corruption versus a single cat5 running between rooms.

I didn’t think to try connecting my SmartTV, which is downstairs, to my network using this device, as it’s always been connected wirelessly. I might give it a shot sometime this weekend though; just to see if works on different power circuits. If not, I’ll update with another review.

Cons: You can't use these in surge suppressor power strips. While not exactly a con in and of itself, if you're somewhat limited as far as wall sockets, this can be an inconvenience. Plus, this is the only con I can think of relative to this device.

Pros: I reviewed the TP-Link model TL-PA6010 Powerline network kit. This kit claims on the packaging, that it can "turn every power outlet into an Internet connection." The two Powerline AV units included in this kit are rated at a very fast (by Powerline/HomePlug networking standards) 600 Mbps. I would add that this top speed can only be achieved only under ideal building wiring and low electrical noise conditions. The two Powerline AV units that came in this kit were easy to setup and use. TP-Link recommends when first setting them up, to plug both units into a common duplex outlet or power strip. Note do not plug the units into a surge protector. Most surge protectors contain RF filters that can play havoc with Powerline networks.

To get started press the "Pair" button on adapter "A" for one second, the Power LED will start to flash. Now repeat the same process on adapter "B". Allow up to 60 seconds for the two adapters to pair-up with each other. You don't need to use the supplied utility mini-CD, unless you want to customize your installation. The most common reason for customizing would be if you already have other similar units installed in your home or business. You may want to assign each one a separate identification name on the Powerline network. The Powerline network runs over your home's AC power wiring at very high frequencies. We did not detect any adverse electrical interference, or ill effects while the Powerline network was in operation.

Cons: Unfortunately I did not get very good results with these two units in my quad level home. I suspect the reason is because I have too many UPS and Surge Protectors connected inside my circa 1969 home. We have multiple desktops and two servers that run 24 x 7, all of which are connected to a multitude of surge protectors. Our TV entertainment rack in the family room is also on a surge protector. The bedroom TV, Etc, Etc. Even our kitchen gas stove is on a surge protector. Our last stove got the electronic control module blown out during an electrical storm. The blown part was so expensive we decided to put the money towards a new stove instead. Lesson learned. I actually got better results with the previous set of TP-Link 300 Mbps Powerline adapters I tested on the same exact outlets. Interesting results as they say.

I thought that perhaps my variable speed whole house fan and kitchen paddle fan, which were both running 24 x 7, interfered with the Powerline system. So I went back and retested a second time with all motors turned-off in the house. This did not seem to make any improvement in the Powerline network speed. My home also has a Smart Meter, could that interfere, not sure?

Other Thoughts: If you want to install a network in your home or office, my recommendations are as follows: If you can do it yourself or hire someone else to do it, by all means install Gigabit Ethernet. It is simply the best, most cost effective and reliable home networking solution you can install. If you live in a home built on a slab, or without attic access, or a condo that frowns on drilling holes in the walls, then I would go with a WIFI-N or a WIFI-AC networking system. My last choice would be Powerline networking. There maybe cases such as in large apartments or condo complexes, where WIFI systems are subjected to too much local interference. In these situations Powerline AV maybe your best networking choice. Powerline AV can also be useful for bringing connectivity to a room that is poorly served by WIFI. You have to be flexible and willing to experiment though to get the best results with Powerline AV.

Here are the benchmark results I got using LANSpeed Test. Note the bottom Mbps value is the most important number:

As you can see my throughput results varied from Average to Very Poor over the Powerline Network system, versus Very Good for my gigabit Ethernet system. To get to my garage the packets had to travel through a three unmanaged gigabit switches on the way there. The measurements were made during the daytime when the network was in use. I know my gigabit Ethernet system is capable of file transfers of up to 850 Mbps, when there is little network traffic. All measurements were made between a Lenovo laptop with a gigabit Ethernet adapter and a BSD Unix NAS server located in my basement.

Would I recommend it? As I stated above, if Ethernet is impractical and WIFI suffers too much interference, then I would try Powerline networki

Pros: Extremely easy to setup and install. Connects to other brands powerline connectors (worked with my existing Netgear setup at least). Marked improvement over AV200. Never dropped a connection. Power saving feature is a nice touch for when not in use and smaller footprint over existing AV200 and other brands AV600 powerline models. Excellent connection range through home wiring…much better than my prior setup! Handedly beats all other powerline setups in terms of overall speed, range through wiring and a trusted company/warranty behind to stand behind their product should something go awry.

Cons: None! I spent a lot of time trying to come up with a “con” and the only possible complaint would be the price depending on what it’s currently listed for. At under $70 it’s an absolute steal but at $99 it’s a fair bit higher than AV500 and generic AV600 models. However, you get what you pay for here. This rendered my old Netgear equipment obsolete. Con…now I feel obligated to replace the other 2 AV200s I still have in my home…..

Other Thoughts: I originally had my 3 story home wired with a Netgear AV200 setup in every room along with a solid router (Nighthawk) that covers all wireless devices. I’m paying for 50Mb download speed and with the AV200 the FASTEST connection I could manage was 34Mb with only a few feet away from the “source”. The SLOWEST connection I had with the TP-Link was 46Mb and I was hitting nearly 60Mb (over my advertised speed) at times. All tests performed through Speedtest.net for consistency. If you can get this kit for under $99, jump on it and enjoy your new found speed and range (if in large home or have shady wiring)!
