1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: non really

Cons: difficult setup. Automatic setup did not work, quick configuration works, but only for a short while as the settings are not permanent.

The TP link renews it’s lease and when it does resets back to the default IP address of 192.168.0.254. This creates a conflict and renders your wifi unusable.

Other Thoughts: their tech support is sub-par at best and were only able to read from a tech support script of how to configure the device, in barely understandable English.

1 out of 5 eggsSet it up once, then it died

Pros: None...I never got to actually use it for its intended purpose.

Cons: What can I say. I bought it on sale, and it will now cost me 50% of what I paid for this thing to ship it back to Newegg.

It set up easily. I plugged it in and it appeared to work, then I found that all the signal LEDs were dark after about 1 hour. It failed to reset by pushing the recessed button, and now only two LEDs are lit solid...apparently locked up. Buyer beware.

Other Thoughts: I will likely get a range extender for my backyard in the future, but it probably won't be this one.

3 out of 5 eggsCannot relocate

Pros: A good extension for existing wifi network.
Works pretty cool when working.

Cons: It doesn't work if you relocate it after first setup. Each time you unplug and plug it on, you need to re-setup the whole process. It won't connect automatically.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

Thank you for checking out our Range Extender.

Theorretically this device is supposed to reconnect after any kind of power-cycle, unless it has been factory reset.

Upgrading the firmware may possibly fix any issue that you are seeing.

You can find the firmware on our site at: http://www.tp-link.us/support/download/?model=TL-WA854RE&version=V1#tbl_j

If you would like assistance with this process then feel free to contact us directly.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Quick Range Extender

Pros: *Affordable
*Easy setup
*Effective

Cons: *Range
*Speed

Other Thoughts: As with most of these devices the range is going be the deciding factor on weather you purchase it or not. I was pretty skeptical of the effectiveness of the device due to the low price compared to the competition. Turns out those were unfounded! The directions in the quick start guide are clear and had the device set up in two minutes with the push of two buttons; no connection to a computer was necessary since my router had WPS.

Our router is on the first floor in an office (far east side of the house). I took the extender to the west side basement to test it out. [Test was quickly done using a LG G2 on AT&t, used the wireless network settings menu to view signal strength and link speed

Basement without the repeater: Signal strength: Good (one bar), Link Speed: 20 Mbps
Basement with repeater: Signal strength: Very Strong (full bars), Link speed 72 Mbps

Outside of the building without the repeater: Signal strength: Poor (no bars indicated, only WiFi icon was lit), Link Speed: 1 to 5 Mbps
Outside of the building with repeater: Signal strength: Very Good (only missing one bar from full), Link Speed: 58 Mbps

Additionally, the Quick Start guide says that the signal shown on the device should show 3 lights for best performance. The outbuilding only gets 1 light (very minimum), but still able to reliably boost the WiFi transfer rate at least 10 fold which is impressive.

Another plus; the repeater uses the same network name, so you don't need to add an additional saved network to your phone/laptop/etc. and then worry about switching between the two if you are moving around.

One thing to also keep in mind with these devices is you will never get the advertised speed even if you are standing right next to it. I am not sure why manufacturers are still slapping a "300Mbps" logo on the box when its nowhere near that hence why I took one egg. That being said its still a solid device that does what its intended to do. I would recommend.

3 out of 5 eggsGood product - once it is connected

Pros: A good product, small foot print, good range, remembers linked devices (auto reconnect to the router)

Cons: Unable to configure via web interface. Web link for the product (from CD or from their main web page) will take you to advertisement of all sorts. It is just impossible to configure. The only way I could connect this is via WPS; and that also took multiple tries and reset of the device. To me connecting a device thru WPS and no way to monitor it means "poor security". If I was living in an aparttment building, I would have returned the device on day one.

Other Thoughts: To be fair, this device increase the wifi coverage quite significantly. I am able to get good wifi signals on far end of our backyard or in remote corner of the garage. I used wifi analyzer (before and after). Without the range extender my signal strength was around -80dbm (in distant corners of the house or outside) but with this I am around -50 to -60 dbm. So, yes I would say that it is a good product but only when you can connect to it and if you can secure it.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Customer,

We appreciate your review.

It is good to see that the device is working out for you and that you are getting a better signal in your apartment.

WPS is a fast and easy way to set this device up. It is very secure and you do have the ability to disable it in your Router after a connection.

If you are getting any other site than the configuration page of the Range Extender when using http://tplinkextender.net, then you are still connected to the Internet via Wireless or Wired.

It is best to directly connect to the Range Extender Wirelessly and avoid any other connection to your main Router during the setup.

Another issue is that you may have your DNS set statically in your Wireless Network Configuration.

If this is the case then you can try accessing the Range Extender by http://192.168.0.254 - this address may have changed since you've already set the TP-Link with WPS.

Feel free to contact us directly with any issues or concerns.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Device

Pros: This TL-WA854RE extender has really helped the range of my wireless network. As others have stated I set the device to use a static IP address using my router's DHCP reservation and I kept the same network SSID name. Upgraded to the new firmware, 140401, which necessitated setting up the extender again through WPS.

Cons: Poor instructions on accessing the setup screen for the device. Once the device added to your network, the easiest way is using WPS, use the assigned IP address by your router to access device setup. I encourage the use of assigning a static IP address to the device as it added stability to my network.

Other Thoughts: I would highly recommend this device. The TL-WA850RE with ethernet connection might be easier to setup than this device with the Wi-Fi only connection.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Range extender does a decent job of extending the range to the other end of the house. We had 1 bar before now we have 3. Great value for the price. Easy setup with both the one button setup and Ethernet connection.

Cons: It does what it should but I thought it would have a bit further range.
