2 out of 5 eggsPoor LAGG support

Pros: This is a managed switch, yes, has some basic features like VLAN support and the cable testing is cool..

Cons: The link aggregation does not seem to be up to IEEE 802.3ad specification. My server with 4 ports in a trunk gets 96% packet loss, and a fraction of the bandwidth to my NAS (Maybe 5MB/s). WebUI seems poorly translated from another language. Had to return because i really needed working LAGG and something I can really rely on.

Other Thoughts: Much better off with a used HP Procurve.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat small switch, great price!

Pros: - Beautifully designed switch, feels like it was forged out of a solid block of aluminum.

- Passive cooling works! No fan noise, not a dust collector and if someone decides to put books on top of it (like my wife did) -- it won't complain; cooling is through the sides. This is a huge deal because when I was working with clients it got tiring to go out on calls because "the computer thingy is making a noise" -- just to find out that a fan bearing had spun out and needed replacing.

- Rack kit is very nice

- The power saving features are real! I put an ammeter on this unit and found that at idle it was drawing around 800 milliwatts (yea - less than a watt!). Just to see if they were exaggerating about the cable length detection, I tried it with eight 3 meter cables and then with eight 50 meter cables -- I could actually see a small difference in current draw :-). Under full load with 8 devices transferring large files I got no more than around 5 watts. That's like a kid's night light.

Now these power savings are not going to bank you hundreds of dollars, but if you were running a rack full of these switches it could add up. Also just the idea that TP-LINK is paying attention to the environment is nice to see.

- Their config sofware is easy to use and intuitive. Other than a few network settings you might need to tweak, this will be a set-and-forget affair. If you have several of these switches in your network then the software may end up being used a little more often.

- TP-LINK's website is excellent. It's easy to find information on their products and they have a download section for latest firmware, etc. I did not try to update the firmware. They also claim 24 x 7 customer support, which was nice to see.

- When doing large file transfers on a relatively unloaded network I was getting over 900 mbps speed. I'm on older cat 5E wiring but very high quality wire, so I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was able to hit this speed.

Cons: No cons I can think of. Power switch on front would be nice, but it would need to be made hard to accidentally hit.

A Linux version of the setup software would be nice.

Other Thoughts: I make sure I use products for a long enough period of time, before rendering a review. I want to make sure that after the honeymoon period (if that is the case), that the device is going to continue working as it did when first put into service. I will tell you that this switch has exceeded all my expectations. It runs cool, performs flawlessly and is the perfect switch for any sophisticated home or small business setting.

At this price point you really can't go wrong.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat home or SMB Switch

Pros: This is a perfect switch for anyone who wants to wire their home or small business and needs a certain level of flexibility and manageability. You get a solid steel constructed switch, internal power supply, included rack mount brackets, and little sticky feet for desktop applications. The general feel of the unit is extremely solid. It feels like a well-made enterprise switch made by any of the big corporate network device manufacturers. It is passively cooled and doesn't seem to radiate much heat. However, if you intend to populate many of the ports and transfer high volumes of information it may be a different story and you may need a higher tier switch.
The switch offers a "smart" interface that allows you to connect and manage basic switch functionality. It allows for VLANs, Quality of Service priorities, and several other basic functions that aren't available in a non-managed switch. This is accessed through a web interface or by downloading the TP-Link Easy Smart Configuration Utility. I found the utility much easier to use and connect to rather than the web interface. It offers the same functions, but in a cleaner looking interface. It also allows you to store connection information for multiple TP-Link smart switches. For a Small/Medium Business in many cases the IT professional(s) wear many hats and should have a pretty easy time configuring this switch to fit their needs.

Cons: There are very few cons about this switch. I would have liked to see a power switch on the reverse side next to the power plug. If you intend to rack mount, it could be a little cumbersome to unplug the power if you are stacking things tight.
This isn't necessarily a con, but setup requires a little networking know how. The switch is set to the IP 192.168.0.1 out of the box. When most home routers occupy this IP or 192.168.1.1, you can’t just plug it into your network and manage it. In either case, you must setup a machine and set your TCP/IP address manually within the same subnet as the switch in order to access the interface to configure. Anyone with basic network knowledge would have no issue, but if the user is configuring this for their home with little to no network experience it might be a slight challenge. Either that or they may choose to not configure the interface and use it as an unmanaged switch.

Other Thoughts: Besides the home or small office applications, this device would make a GREAT LAN Party switch. It's relatively cheap and with 16 Gigabit ports, you can wire everyone up and have a good time.
