The ooma Core VoIP Phone System lets your standard analog telephone make and receive calls over a broadband internet connection. Just plug a regular phone into the ooma Hub and the Hub into a broadband-connected router, and you’re off and talking! The ooma Scout device extends the benefits of the ooma system to additional phone jacks in the home.

With ooma, call anyone, at any number, anywhere in the US with no monthly fees. You get all the features you’ve come to expect: caller-ID, call-waiting, and voicemail, plus the freedom to talk on your existing corded or cordless phones with no PC or headset required. The system provides an easy-to-use digital answering feature called the Broadband Answering Machine, which combines all the functions of a traditional answering machine—including real-time message screening and call-intercept—with the advanced functions of digital voicemail.

ooma also reserves bandwidth and prioritizes your voice conversations so they will sound better than landline. The ooma Core VoIP Phone System is a talented and innovative set of devices bringing the convenience of VoIP into your standard phone system, saving you time and money!

5 out of 5 eggsVery Happy. Goodbye AT&T.

Pros: Easy setup, no monthly bills, great call quality.
Works with my fax machine.
I have the Ooma and my modem and router connected to a small UPS so i can still make calls if the power goes out.

Cons: None (only waiting for it to arrive).

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product, Easy setup

Pros: I've tried just about every VOIP product on the market and this one is by far the best!
-Easy setup/install
-Great customer service if you do have to call them
-All the additional calling features you could need
-Great web interface for changing account features and listening to voice mail
- NO MONTHLY FEES!!

Cons: -Multi-ring feature does not work if the other person calling you is an Ooma user or calling from an 800 number. They are supposedly working on this issue.

5 out of 5 eggsDefinitely diggin' the Ooma

Pros: Easy, elegant, and the service is FREE
This device really is plug-and-play
Ooma service delivers superior call quality and an awesome feature set

Cons: Your installation may not really fit the models described in the install guide
I replaced my TWC phone box by hooking the PHONE jack from the Ooma into the wall where the TWC box had connected and now I have dial tone in all the right places.

Other Thoughts: I thought I'd need the Scout but I don't. If I had known this up front I might have gotten the cooler Telo.

4 out of 5 eggsIt's been good for me

Pros: It does what it says. I can't complain too much (see the con). Voice quality is good. I don't do much international calling, when I do, it's to Canada at $0.014 a minute, which I think is cheap. The connection of the appliance was straightforward, for the most part.

Cons: The down-side was that the address of my PC changed on the network since the ooma box sits in-between the PC and the network hub. So, ooma gets its IP address from the router and the PC gets its IP address from the ooma. I had to change some of the bookmarks and other addresses on the PC to directly address other devices on the network. So, instead of addressing my NAS drive with the host name, I have to address it with the numeric IP address. It's not a hardship, but it took me a while to figure it out. I could run another network cable back to the hub dedicated to the ooma, and I think then there would be no issues at all, but I'm too lazy to do that.

Other Thoughts: ooma is only as good as your internet connection (duh!). I kept my landline and went to the cheapest phone plan I could ($14/month) so that my wife, who is not particularly technical, could dial out in an emergency. I also cut back on my cellular phone bill since we do all our long distance calling on ooma now.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect!

Pros: I found out about Ooma from a neighbor who raved about it. I first was skeptical about but when I saw the price drop on Newegg I figured it couldn't hurt. Now I am kicking myself that I have been paying ATT $30 a month for the same thing. It was Easy to set up and porting my number was a easy as pie. It is designed really well and worth every penny.

Cons: The manual says it has to be installed behind my switch after modem. I just run it fine off my gigabit switch. Also the Main phone has to be in the basement with the modem. The fiance wasn't to confident initially but now brags about it too.

Other Thoughts: I hope the gov't keeps Net Neutrality because these types of systems is exactly what the ISP will throttle if they have control.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Phone System

Pros: Ooma provides an amazing phone service. There are no monthly fees, and you receive free long distance calling, call waiting, and caller ID. It also features E911, which allows the 911 system to recognize your home address through the VOIP network. The call quality is excellent. In fact, it is so good that I have been able to use the system to send faxes (there is a special code you dial first). The hardware is also top notch and looks beautiful. The unit is solid, and the attention to detail is superb. Another plus is the ability to use this device anywhere there is an internet connection. This came in handy when I moved, as I was able to bring my phone service with me to a friends house in the mean time.

Cons: Sometimes locks up if there are issues with your router dropping its internet connection.

Other Thoughts: The Ooma unit features a custom dial-tone.

5 out of 5 eggsLove it!

Pros: No more phone bills! More for less.

Cons: You have to learn something new. You can't just plug a phone in to get a dial tone.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this system 3+ years ago when it was $500. Back then, we received free second line, second phone number and lifetime premier service. Since 3 yrs of phone service would have cost me $1620, I believe the unit has more than paid for itself.

5 out of 5 eggsBest deal out there

Pros: -Free
-No catch, you just have to pay that initial fee unless you want extra features
-Excellent sound quality (A close friend who is a professional that deals with sound mixing and mastering daily was surprised at the quality of the sound)
-If you do do the Premier service the "Do Not Disturb" feature is unbelievable for putting baby down for the night or for a nap :)

Cons: If I had to be picky:
-Initial price
-This package requires a hardwire connection (no wireless support. However the new version does)
-You must have a computer that connects has an available Ethernet jack (during setup only, takes about 10 min, I have a desktop that only has wireless so I had to borrow someone's laptop, not a big deal but I wish I would have known before hand).

Other Thoughts: I keep waiting for there to be some hidden catch, but now after four months I still have yet to find one! For those wondering why I picked Ooma over Magic Jack: Sound quality- from all reports I have read Ooma beats the pants off MJ in sound quality; Convenience- the computer the MJ is plugged into must stay on at all times and when you receive a call it alerts you on the computer, Ooma is not linked to the computer for anything other then setup and possibly if you want it to route an Ethernet cable from it to computer for possible less wiring. If you are on the edge about buying Ooma I would say do it and start seeing the savings!

5 out of 5 eggsOOMA ANSWERS

Pros: I have owned a hub and two scouts for about 18 months. With the exception of FAXES, they work nearly flawlessly. And if there's going to be an outtage, they text you in advance (or as soon as it happens). These are few and far between. So, if 'security' involves voice calls, no problem. For faxes, it requires dialing *99 and then I get about 70% faxes going through and receiving. It's my internal house wiring (cable - OLD cables). Others tell me theirs works 99%. The new Telo is amazing too. I have had it for a bit now. It is as smooth for me as the Hub / Scouts.

The only TECH you need to know is that you can put it IN FRONT of your router or behind. IN FRONT means IT controls bandwidth to your router taking what it needs when you use it. Behind means it shares with everyone else who happens to be downloading (not the greatest idea).

Cons: It took me less than a year to pay back the 'investment' . You figure it out. If the company is in business for ___ months, you are ahead. So far, so good. I am WAAAYYY ahead and with the TELO, they don't seem to be leaving the party soon.

Other Thoughts: Buy one, Buy one, Buy one.
