Like a charm. No tricks.
- Pros: It does what it says and it's free service. Seems that, despite official comments to the opposite, you can, in fact, energize your entire house. looks like [at least] three standard phones work off 1 line. This is a very easy unit to set up the default way, and home wiring can be modified [if its worth it to you] to energize multiple phone jacks. I brag about my phone system all the time, but apparently I am one of the few who believe that not paying for phone service is better than paying ridiculous phone fees. I highly suggest you buy this unit if you have dependable internet service.
- Cons: Not too many options in the device configuration utility. Wish I could shut off DHCP, or access configuration from a higher network, but, hey, maybe I'm asking too much. Also, I did have some static at first, but this is really not a Con as it turned out it was my own wiring that was the culpret - so I replaced alot of wiring and fixed the connections. No more static!
- Other Thoughts: I custom installed this unit, being a telecom geek. I used line 1 for the phone line (energized all the lines in the house) and used line two as a service line (to go to the Scout). I did this because I wanted to install the Ooma Hub in the basement next to my router, server, and internet, etc, but I also wanted to use the voice mail features of the Scout. Also, I did not choose to pipe all internet traffic through the unit itself, even though this seemed to be highly reccomended. I must say that I am impressed with the overal balance of sumplicity, expandability, and customization.
Great service with some minor caveats
- Pros: ooma is quality equipment. You can easily tell this by the nice box and packaging it comes in to the base and scout units. No cheap junk here. So yes, you pay a high cost up front but at least you're getting decent equipment.
Easy-to-read manual. Really--no translation needed. It offers easy to understand instructions along with diagrams so you can properly install the device without second guessing. I wish all manuals were this easy to read.
Unlike magicJack, you don't have to have your PC on to use the device, and unlike mJ, don't have to dial the area code first of a number first if it's local.
The ooma Lounge offers lots of customization. You get your typical services like call-waiting, caller ID, and voicemail. But you also have some neat features like the ability to block (blacklist) telephone numbers, and even block anonymous calls that don't provide a caller ID.
- Cons: ooma needs to open up their Lounge (forums) to non-subscribers so they can find out more about the service before making a purchase. This would have helped me a great deal. You can't visit the Lounge unless you purchase and then activate an ooma device.
- Add additional support staff to reduce hold times. While I haven't had to use their support, if I did I wouldn't want to wait as long as what people have reported (some over an hour).
- Expand International calling areas. For example, I live in Maine but ooma does not list a rate to call New Brunswick where I have some friends.
- Other Thoughts: I decided on ooma but waited until Newegg dropped the price on it (it was $250). It took me about 10 min to set up up my ooma device. I thought the manual was very easy to understand and provided nice diagrams to aid you in installation. While it may seem dumbed down (I didn't think so), it offered very clear explanations to make installation as simple as possible.
My overall rating would be 90%, or 4.5 stars.

Very Happy. Goodbye AT&T.
- Pros: Easy setup, no monthly bills, great call quality.
Works with my fax machine. I have the Ooma and my modem and router connected to a small UPS so i can still make calls if the power goes out.
- Cons: None (only waiting for it to arrive).
WORKS WELL
- Pros: Easy to set up! Took me less than 20 min. Sound quality is great. Saving $39 a month.
- Cons: Some noise on line when dialing. Clears when call is answered.
Great Product, Easy setup
- Pros: I've tried just about every VOIP product on the market and this one is by far the best!
-Easy setup/install -Great customer service if you do have to call them -All the additional calling features you could need -Great web interface for changing account features and listening to voice mail - NO MONTHLY FEES!!
- Cons: -Multi-ring feature does not work if the other person calling you is an Ooma user or calling from an 800 number. They are supposedly working on this issue.
