OverviewCustomer ReviewSpecificationsProduct Tour
The ooma Core VoIP Phone System lets your standard analog telephone make and receive calls over a broadband internet connection. Just plug a regular phone into the ooma Hub and the Hub into a broadband-connected router, and you’re off and talking! The ooma Scout device extends the benefits of the ooma system to additional phone jacks in the home.

With ooma, call anyone, at any number, anywhere in the US with no monthly fees. You get all the features you’ve come to expect: caller-ID, call-waiting, and voicemail, plus the freedom to talk on your existing corded or cordless phones with no PC or headset required. The system provides an easy-to-use digital answering feature called the Broadband Answering Machine, which combines all the functions of a traditional answering machine—including real-time message screening and call-intercept—with the advanced functions of digital voicemail.

ooma also reserves bandwidth and prioritizes your voice conversations so they will sound better than landline. The ooma Core VoIP Phone System is a talented and innovative set of devices bringing the convenience of VoIP into your standard phone system, saving you time and money!

Like a charm. No tricks.

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: It does what it says and it's free service. Seems that, despite official comments to the opposite, you can, in fact, energize your entire house. looks like [at least] three standard phones work off 1 line. This is a very easy unit to set up the default way, and home wiring can be modified [if its worth it to you] to energize multiple phone jacks. I brag about my phone system all the time, but apparently I am one of the few who believe that not paying for phone service is better than paying ridiculous phone fees. I highly suggest you buy this unit if you have dependable internet service.
Cons: Not too many options in the device configuration utility. Wish I could shut off DHCP, or access configuration from a higher network, but, hey, maybe I'm asking too much. Also, I did have some static at first, but this is really not a Con as it turned out it was my own wiring that was the culpret - so I replaced alot of wiring and fixed the connections. No more static!
Other Thoughts: I custom installed this unit, being a telecom geek. I used line 1 for the phone line (energized all the lines in the house) and used line two as a service line (to go to the Scout). I did this because I wanted to install the Ooma Hub in the basement next to my router, server, and internet, etc, but I also wanted to use the voice mail features of the Scout. Also, I did not choose to pipe all internet traffic through the unit itself, even though this seemed to be highly reccomended. I must say that I am impressed with the overal balance of sumplicity, expandability, and customization.

Great service with some minor caveats

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: ooma is quality equipment. You can easily tell this by the nice box and packaging it comes in to the base and scout units. No cheap junk here. So yes, you pay a high cost up front but at least you're getting decent equipment.

Easy-to-read manual. Really--no translation needed. It offers easy to understand instructions along with diagrams so you can properly install the device without second guessing. I wish all manuals were this easy to read.

Unlike magicJack, you don't have to have your PC on to use the device, and unlike mJ, don't have to dial the area code first of a number first if it's local.

The ooma Lounge offers lots of customization. You get your typical services like call-waiting, caller ID, and voicemail. But you also have some neat features like the ability to block (blacklist) telephone numbers, and even block anonymous calls that don't provide a caller ID.
Cons: ooma needs to open up their Lounge (forums) to non-subscribers so they can find out more about the service before making a purchase. This would have helped me a great deal. You can't visit the Lounge unless you purchase and then activate an ooma device.

- Add additional support staff to reduce hold times. While I haven't had to use their support, if I did I wouldn't want to wait as long as what people have reported (some over an hour).

- Expand International calling areas. For example, I live in Maine but ooma does not list a rate to call New Brunswick where I have some friends.
Other Thoughts: I decided on ooma but waited until Newegg dropped the price on it (it was $250). It took me about 10 min to set up up my ooma device. I thought the manual was very easy to understand and provided nice diagrams to aid you in installation. While it may seem dumbed down (I didn't think so), it offered very clear explanations to make installation as simple as possible.

My overall rating would be 90%, or 4.5 stars.

Definitely diggin' the Ooma

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Easy, elegant, and the service is FREE
This device really is plug-and-play
Ooma service delivers superior call quality and an awesome feature set
Cons: Your installation may not really fit the models described in the install guide
I replaced my TWC phone box by hooking the PHONE jack from the Ooma into the wall where the TWC box had connected and now I have dial tone in all the right places.
Other Thoughts: I thought I'd need the Scout but I don't. If I had known this up front I might have gotten the cooler Telo.

It's been good for me

Pros: It does what it says. I can't complain too much (see the con). Voice quality is good. I don't do much international calling, when I do, it's to Canada at $0.014 a minute, which I think is cheap. The connection of the appliance was straightforward, for the most part.
Cons: The down-side was that the address of my PC changed on the network since the ooma box sits in-between the PC and the network hub. So, ooma gets its IP address from the router and the PC gets its IP address from the ooma. I had to change some of the bookmarks and other addresses on the PC to directly address other devices on the network. So, instead of addressing my NAS drive with the host name, I have to address it with the numeric IP address. It's not a hardship, but it took me a while to figure it out. I could run another network cable back to the hub dedicated to the ooma, and I think then there would be no issues at all, but I'm too lazy to do that.
Other Thoughts: ooma is only as good as your internet connection (duh!). I kept my landline and went to the cheapest phone plan I could ($14/month) so that my wife, who is not particularly technical, could dial out in an emergency. I also cut back on my cellular phone bill since we do all our long distance calling on ooma now.

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: I found out about Ooma from a neighbor who raved about it. I first was skeptical about but when I saw the price drop on Newegg I figured it couldn't hurt. Now I am kicking myself that I have been paying ATT $30 a month for the same thing. It was Easy to set up and porting my number was a easy as pie. It is designed really well and worth every penny.
Cons: The manual says it has to be installed behind my switch after modem. I just run it fine off my gigabit switch. Also the Main phone has to be in the basement with the modem. The fiance wasn't to confident initially but now brags about it too.
Other Thoughts: I hope the gov't keeps Net Neutrality because these types of systems is exactly what the ISP will throttle if they have control.
