2 out of 5 eggsAtleast someone got smart and returned this

Pros: that it was returned

Cons: you can get a better machine at half the price, else where. Not a hit on Newegg in the least. Its the price that Apple demands for a mid range laptop. Resolution is low for a 17" screen, small hdd, very little ram, and mid range CPU for $1200. You have have to be mental to pay this price for a barely $700 laptop.

5 out of 5 eggsA most excellent 17" laptop

Pros: It shipped with an Intel Core i7 running at 2.66Ghz, not the i5 at 2.53! And it has a matte, not glossy, screen. The item looks brand new. There are no scratches on the case. The screen is bright and even, with no detectable bad pixels. Overall this MacBook is fast. It's replacing a 17" G4 PowerBook so the speed difference is startling . And it can run OS X 10.8.x. And I don't find the leading edge sharp at all (no pun intended).

Cons: None really. It is big, and slightly heavy.

Other Thoughts: I was happy that UPS was able to get this to me on-time, even with the recent storm, so props to them. I was thrilled when I opened the outer package to find the original shipping box. I was delighted when I saw no significant signs of wear or damage to the machine. I was impressed when I fired up the laptop to find it was a significant upgrade from what I thought I ordered. So I'm sold on the fact that Newegg delivered on it's promise. Well deserved kudos to Newegg

4 out of 5 eggsNot too bad

Pros: The screen size is great, and the specs are wrong - its actually 1920x1200 resolution (Apple never made a MBP 17" in a lower resolution). The screen quality /color is beyond great. It even came in the original box, suprising for a refurb. Compared to my windows machine, very fast.

Cons: Front edge near trackpad area is SHARP, just google MacBook sharp edge! Long scratch in bottom of laptop.

Other Thoughts: I was a bit wary of buying a refurb notebook w/o a return policy, but took the plunge. Having never used a Mac since the OS8/9 days, I wanted to give OSX a try. I kept my i7 quad laptop for Windows things.

The first thing I notice is that the screen quality is 100x better than my windows PC, which is a very high end laptop too. I was concerned about a glossy vs anti-glare, but I only use it indoor, so its not a big deal. I can't imagine what a retina would look like.

The i5 in here is still a first gen, has 4GB of RAM, and has a 5400 RPM drive. It is surprisingly fast for the specs compared to a Windows machine, but I suppose its apples and oranges.

I don't know what Apple was thinking when they designed this thing, the edge is SHARP where your palm rests. This is a common complaint, and people suggest files, sandpaper, and a Dremel to remedy this! A $2500+ (new) computer shouldn't have such ergonomic issues, but I will find a less invasive way deal with it, as I am not taking a dremel to my laptop!

The machine came packaged well, in its original box so I have to assume its more "off-lease" than refurbished, which is fine. The battery lasts well over 4 hours with medium brightness and pandora streaming on WiFi. My only complaint is the big scractch in the bottom of the machine. The lid, screen, and palmrest areas are perfect though.
