4 out of 5 eggsI choose this over 2013

Pros: I was on board to buy the 2013 model but I chose the late 2012 model instead. This model has the IVY bridge chipset so although its not haswell, its no dog either. The 8GB and slightly higher clock speed make this machine very good.

The graphics are not as fast as the 2013 model but they are not as bad as you may think. OSX Mavericks has increased the performance and battery life. This Laptop is no slouch and the retina screen really is amazing. I don't run at recommended settings but the higher resolution to gain real estate and there is truly no fuzziness.

Boot times are about 10 seconds from cold.

Windows users, it is possible to install and run Windows 8.1 from an external USB 3 drive. I have tested both an SSD and spinning drive in an external drive caddy and the SSD boots Windows 8 in about 15 Seconds while the spinning drive close to 30. Its trully usable and Windows scores are around 5.8 lowest being graphics. I do IT support for a living and booting to Windows via USB 3 is not only usable but a good solution that does not use your internal precious SSD,.

I am not a gamer but I have installed several test games and they ran pretty well. SimCity5 on mac oSX was unplayable. Installed under windows I could run on medium settings.

Frame rates on Need for Speed Paradise city were actually shockingly good. I hate frame drops and I didn't detect any. Now for games I do not run at a native resolution but the retina screen does do a very good job at scaling without looking pixelated. is this a gaming machine.. no but could it be fun to catch up while in a hotel room to pass the time, yes absolutely.

Bottom line here, the 2013 is xx% faster here, and xx% faster there, but honestly benchmarks sometimes dont reflect real world usage. I am sure that 4GB might become a bottle neck if you do any Photoshop or illustrator work before the HD4000 does. Sometimes those % points neglect to reveal some of the other downsides.

Cons: No way to upgrade Memory, but 8GB is a nice amount. Hard drive is a pain to upgrade but it is possible.

Other Thoughts: Resale value on Mac's tends to be a lot higher than PC Laptops. I was using a 2008 Macbook unibody before this and it was running great. The only reason i really upgraded was for retina.

4 out of 5 eggsgreat for me

Pros: Does it's work like an Apple

Cons: Small Storage

Other Thoughts: this thing is fun to use, it just has a very small storage capacity. If that is OK with you then pull the trigger. Very portable. I like it.
