3 out of 5 eggsDon't get the warranty

Pros: It came as described. All around, it's a good computer.

Cons: The CD/DVD drive failed, and some pixels exploded.

Other Thoughts: The extended warranty company refused to replace the screen, claiming it was cosmetic damage. The contract specifically states that a screen with 50 or more dead pixels will be repaired, but ServiceNet refused. Don't waste your money on these people.

4 out of 5 eggsGood for being 3 years old

Pros: This particular machine comes with the upgraded 1680 x 1050 matte display and AMD Radeon 6770 discrete GPU in addition to the integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics. A previous review said that it did not have discrete graphics but what it actually contains is a dual GPU set up - the discrete GPU kicks in when needed and then backs down to the integrated GPU to conserve power. Speaking of power, I was pleasantly surprised that I can get about 5 hours out of this on a single charge under normal usage conditions whereas my similarly specced Asus laptop craps out at less than 2. This Mac is new enough that it will be supported for a while yet to come with OS X updates and I upgraded mine to 10.9 and have had no issue with it. This is one of the last 15" MacBook Pro's to have an optical drive which may not really be needed anymore but for the times that you do need one, it comes in handy to have it built in rather than trying to find an external drive. This is also one of the last MacBook Pro's that is user-upgradeable meaning that you can add more RAM, upgrade your hard drive and replace the battery if need be.

Cons: It's not without it's flaws though. OS X 10.7 will run fine on the 750GB 7200RPM hard drive and 4GB of RAM. However, if you decide to upgrade to Mavericks (10.9), you're going to notice a distinct performance decrease by nature of the additional features and improvements that two major OS revisions brings with it. 10.7 is rock solid and works exceptionally well so you don't need to feel pressured to upgrade the OS unless you have to have the newest features. The lack of USB 3.0 sucks but you have to remember that this machine is from 2011 when most laptops, regardless if they were OS X or Windows based, were still using USB 2.0 only. My last gripe is the Thunderbolt port is also the only place where an external display can be attached. I use a mini DisplayPort to HDMI or DVI adapter to do this and I don't currently use Thunderbolt peripherals but keep that in mind if you would ever want to run a second monitor and something like a Thunderbolt hard drive.

Other Thoughts: I upgraded mine to 16GB of RAM (officially, only 8GB is supported but unofficially, 16GB works just fine) and I replaced the hard drive with a solid state drive. After my upgrades, my boot times on 10.7 went from about 30 seconds to roughly 5 and Mavericks used to boot in about a minute and now it's less than 10 seconds. For me, they were necessary upgrades which added a few hundred bucks to my overall total cost of ownership but increased the performance dramatically and will likely extend the life of my machine by a large margin.

4 out of 5 eggsfairly pleased

Pros: Great Condition
Fast Shipping
Came with macbook box
As described (except graphics card)

Cons: Graphics card was not AMD Radeon

Other Thoughts: Everything was as described except for the Graphics Card. It did not come with an AMD Radeon card. It came with Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB. Which was a disappointment. Other than that everything is exactly as described in the specs. Great condition. No scuffs. It actually came in the MacBook Pro box which is something not even Apple Refurbished MacBooks come with. This is my first macbook and I have noticed the battery doesn't last long. Says 2 hours of battery but ends up being less. The charger power block get really hot when charging and using at the same time. Other than that I recommend this product to anyone. You save quit a bit.
