Apple MacBook Pro ME865LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop with Retina Display

The 13.3" MacBook Pro Notebook Computer with Retina Display from Apple is a powerful notebook computer with an innovative, ultrathin, ultraportable aluminum unibody design. It is loaded with advanced power management features and an integrated lithium polymer battery, which work together to provide up to nine hours of wireless web browsing.

  • 2.4GHz Intel Core i5 Dual-Core (Haswell)
  • 8GB of Onboard 1600MHz DDR3L RAM
  • 256GB PCIe-Based Flash Storage
  • Integrated Intel Iris Graphics
  • 13.3" LED-Backlit IPS Retina Display
  • 2560 x 1600 Native Resolution
  • 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0
  • Thunderbolt 2, USB 3.0, HDMI
  • FaceTime HD Camera, Dual Mics
  • Mac OS X Mavericks

This version of the 13.3-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display (model ME864LL/A) features a 2.4GHz Core i5 dual-core processor, 128GB of flash storage, and 4GB of onboard RAM.

It's powered by OS X Mavericks, the world's most advanced operating system and built to bring out the best in your Mac. And the MacBook Pro comes pre-loaded with the latest version of the iLife software suite (iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand) as well as the iWork productivity suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote).

The system is powered by a dual-core 4th generation Haswell 2.4GHz Intel Core i5 processor. The 4th-gen Haswell processor uses low voltage for improved battery life without sacrificing performance. The MacBook Pro with Retina Display also has 4GB of onboard 1600MHz DDR3L RAM, 128GB of PCIe-based flash storage and a SDXC media card slot. You'll be able to connect to the Internet with fast-speed 802.11ac Wi-Fi. The MacBook Pro also supports a/b/g/n Wi-Fi networks as well. The MacBook Pro also features built-in Bluetooth 4.0, which allows you to connect wireless headphones, keyboard, mice and other compatible peripherals without a hassle.

Retina Display

The 13.3" display of this MacBook Pro features over 5 million pixels. The pixel density is so high your eyes won't be able to discern individual pixels. Now with a 2560 x 1600 native resolution, you can see more of your high-resolution images onscreen with pixel-for-pixel accuracy. The Retina display also reduces glare while maintaining incredible color and quality. In fact, it has a 29 percent higher contrast ratio than a standard MacBook Pro display. Deeper black levels and vibrant color, everything is rich and beautiful. IPS technology gives you a wide, 178-degree view of everything on the screen, so you'll see the difference at practically any angle

Fourth-Generation Intel Core Processor

Since OS X is designed to take advantage of each core, the fourth-generation Intel Core i5 dual-core processor (based on the latest Haswell architecture) captures every bit of performance from the processor. When you need more power for a processor-intensive application like Aperture or Final Cut Pro, Turbo Boost 2.0 automatically increases the speed of the active cores. And by shifting core frequency in small increments, Turbo Boost allows the processor to manage performance without sacrificing efficiency.

This model features a 2.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor with Turbo Boost speeds up to 2.9GHz. It's complemented by Intel Iris integrated graphics, which can boost performance by up to 90 percent (over the previous generation MacBook Pro with Retina display) — so it can handle both everyday tasks and graphics-intensive creative apps.

All Flash Storage

This MacBook Pro feels incredibly fluid and responsive. It's all thanks to its PCIe-based flash storage, which gives you up to 60 percent faster read and write performance than its predecessor. When you use apps like Final Cut Pro or Aperture, you can perform even the most demanding tasks right from your internal storage. And since this MacBook Pro comes with 128GB of flash storage, you can keep all your important files with you, including large video and photo libraries. Flash doesn't have any moving parts, which makes it reliable and quiet. And flash storage is extremely energy efficient, which means your MacBook Pro also has the ability to stay in standby mode for up to a month without having to be plugged in .

802.11ac: The New Definition of Fast

The MacBook Pro now supports ultrafast 802.11ac Wi-Fi. When connected to an 802.11ac base station — including the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule — wireless performance is up to three times faster than with the previous generation of MacBook Pro. And your Wi-Fi range improves as well.

The MacBook Pro with Retina Display also has dual USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI port and an SDXC card slot, you can build an entire professional studio with the MacBook Pro as its centerpiece.

Thunderbolt and USB 3

Delivering an amazing 10 gigabits per second of transfer speeds in both directions, the ultrafast and ultraflexible Thunderbolt port allows you to move data up to 20 times faster than with USB 2.0 and more than 12 times faster than with FireWire 800. You can also daisy-chain up to six Thunderbolt-compatible peripherals without using a hub. Thunderbolt also supports DisplayPort for high resolution displays and works with existing adapters for HDMI, DVI, and VGA displays.

5 out of 5 eggsIt's fast, simple, and elegant

Pros: Still new to the MacBook, but it's definitely an easy setup. I'm still trying to get used to the UI and how things work between Windows and MacOS X, but they're all relatively easy to learn. The easy setup made it simple to get started.

First of all, the screen is extremely bright and crisp, and the retina display helps browsing the web and looking at images. It makes it simple to edit images and code websites with the amount of tools available for this computer.

Battery life and standby is excellent, also creating multiple user accounts was a breeze and things sync well with Apple's own ecosystem.

Cons: Difficult to navigate with just the touchpad at times. I recommend using an external mouse.

Great for multimedia, coding, and photoshop, not so much for gaming.

5 out of 5 eggsQuick and great experience

Pros: Speed of the machine, quality of the display and overall build quality is excellent. Holds a charge for quite a while and charges quickly. Newegg is awesome as usual with timely delivery and good communication. Love not having to pay sales tax!

Cons: None, really. Would like a larger screen for the money but other than that ia love the retina display.

5 out of 5 eggsbest bang for the buck

Pros: - awesome price for the hardware
- no touch screen (i don't like touch screens)
- iris graphics
- 802.11 a/c wireless
- pcie SSD (which is even faster than non-raid sata)
- highest build quality
- great keyboard (which is backlit)
- IPS retina display with phenomenal color accuracy and full sRGB range
- amazing battery life
- pretty seamless integration of hardware/software with good HiDPI font rendering
- decent speakers for the size of the machine

Cons: - some people have had major problems with the wireless connections on these laptops. however, i am not one of those people. mine works very well and without issue. for those who ARE having problems, i suspect a driver or firmware update will resolve the issue. i purchased my macbook at a local brick-and-mortar, solely because i wanted to make sure i could exchange it immediately if i had wireless problems. it would have been a bit cheaper (i.e. no tax) had i purchased it through newegg.
- memory, cpu, and battery are non-upgradeable/non-replaceable. this is kind of a big deal. particularly with the battery. batteries should be replaceable, period.
- glossy display (though almost all ultrabooks currently use glossy displays)

Other Thoughts: macs are known for running a bit hot. some people think that 80'C to 90'C is just fine but if you investigate the overclocking community - a demographic with substantial understanding/experience of thermals and longevity - you will discover those temperatures are considered less than optimal. however, i was able to reduce my max temps by about 10'C through the use of third party fan control software.

the speakers are okay, but most people don't buy notebooks this size for their speakers. still, playing with the equalizer in itunes can make the audio quite pleasant.

i am neither a fanboy nor hater of apple or microsoft. i do find some apple users a bit too smug given their general lack of tech-prowess (though this could be said for some windows and linux users, as well). regardless of your preference, this laptop is the best bang for your buck. hate OSX? no problem - even after the additional costs of a windows OS purchase, this laptop is still cheaper than the competition and well worth the price.

5 out of 5 eggsImpressive

Pros: + Screen is beautiful
+ SSD/flash makes it very fast and snappy
+ Haswell GPU performs very well
+ Stays pretty cool and quiet while gaming (for a 13in laptop)
+ Great build quality and feel
+ Runs Parallels like a boss
+ Battery lasts all day

Cons: - Wish it had 1 more USB port (2 thunderbolt ports seems like overkill, but thats just me)

Other Thoughts: I owned the last iteration of the 13in retina and replaced it with this. The big difference in my eyes is the GPU performance, and all the issues I had with the old version are now gone. Could not recommend a better machine.
