2 out of 5 eggsnot for software development

Pros: Great specs. Thin and light.

Cons: Screen is glossy and the reflection is distracting. Daytime use in office environment is the worst, home use where you can control the environment is best.

Setting up a developer environment is harder than compiling and installing a Linux kernel. No package manager available by default, you better get started with that. Setup involves hours spent on forums and newsgroups. You need to get an Apple ID so you get stdlib installed. You have to install XQuartz to use remote X applications. The default timeout for remote X applications on this machine is less than 10 minutes. You better figure out how to change that otherwise your connection will break every 10 minutes! My favourite font (xfonts-terminus) is not available and not installable on this machine. With half of this effort one could setup/use Linux that is more customizable and developer user-friendly.

No page up and page down keys.

MacOS keyboard shortcuts are a pain to configure.

No copy on select. You have to press command-C and command-V every time.

No ethernet port. You have to use a converter that retails for $30.

Other Thoughts: I got this laptop at work, I did not have to buy it. My personal laptop is a T440s running Linux and I like that much more. (The T440s also has issues that needed newsgroup reading, but the end result is more pleasing and that machine is much more reasonably priced.)

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop but opt for AppleCare!

Pros: Thin and fairly light considering the components it packs. Very fast, great for running multiple VMs for development, testing, etc. Display is beautiful, battery life is pretty good given the i7 output and screen resolution (I opted for the faster i7). Seems high quality.

Cons: Unreliable. Just got mine back from the Genius Bar today after dropping it off last week. The SSD died.... after FOUR WEEKS. The Apple Store didn't have a replacement, so I had to wait a few days before one was available.

Other Thoughts: Lessons:
1. Use Time Machine consistently... as in "often", and
2. Spring for AppleCare during your warranty period.

The old Macbook Pros were troopers. I recently sold my mid-2011 with a core2duo, and never had a problem with it. I never needed to, but I could replace the harddrive. I could upgrade RAM...

These new ones? No way. The 512 GB SSD is $1000 by itself to replace. The cheapest thing to replace on this thing is the display, at $600.

It's a great laptop... but expensive. You'd think paying $2800 for a quality piece would buy you reliability... but there are no guarantees! Repeat after me: "Applecare"...

5 out of 5 eggsNo Ship padding?

Pros: Awesome laptop. The best

Cons: Newegg's shipping.

Other Thoughts: This was just in a box, loose to bang around during shipping. I received it as a gift from my wife. Opened up and noticed it was dented on the bottom. A perfect square dent from the power brick (charger) that it was packaged on. Fed Ex obviously didn't treat it too well and there was no padding between the Apple box itself and the shipping box from Newegg leaving 4-6 inches of play. Not good Newegg.
