5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop, just wonderful!

Pros: The Processor is FAST
Nice Ram, upgradeable to 8gb
Cool, always runs cool, even on passive cooling
128 mb graphics is enough to play some pretty good games at decent speeds
The numpad is great
The keyboard is pretty good once you get used to it, i don't normally like flat keys, but this keyboard has convinced me otherwhise
HDMI out to 1080p monitor makes for great data center.
Easy access to HDD and RAM
AMAZING battery life

Cons: Just a few very minor ones. one USB port doesn't seem to receive as much power as the others, and that's normally not a problem. Debian doesn't support powersaving features with the default drivers, leads to some custom scripting, and the multi-touch gestures annoyed me, but i turned them off. Didn't support Grub when Debian 5 was out, but Debian 6's GRUB fixed the problems.

Other Thoughts: First, I changed the 320 Gb hard drive out for a 500 Gb one for space. Windows 7 was (and still is) lightning fast, although it has slowed down due to windows' ntfs disk formatting. Turning off the wifi adapter and using the computer only for typing up a document or browsing the web, i can get up to 5.5 hours of battery life by adjusting the power saver settings. I have only used up to 25% of the processor, and I do intense Matlab simulations. I dualboot with Debian, and both OSes run super fast and are great. This laptop has served me for school, work, and play. It makes a great HD entertainment center and a great gaming computer up to a point and is great for everyday things like browsing and typing up documents. It's a great laptop, it's unfortunate that Newegg doesn't stock these models anymore, but they should. Great buy, i am COMPLETELY SATISFIED with my purchase.

5 out of 5 eggsPowerful machine crazy price

Pros: A blazing fast laptop with high-end hardware for budget laptop price. The i5, 4gb of ram Gigabit LAN, HDMI, etc., like this sell for hundreds more. You can't beat it. I check prices frequently and you never see laptops with these components for this price, not even refurbs!

Cons: I'm lukewarm about the keyboard and the button bar but for this price, I easily live with it.

Other Thoughts: I've had this machine for a few months now. I bought it from another vendor in this price range (a little more than the current sale price of 550). I love it. The machine is smoking fast and comes out of sleep in the blink of an eye. I've had no problem with the speakers or headphone jack. The sound is crisp, clear, loud and static free using the preinstalled drivers.

2 out of 5 eggsGood price, good components, not a good computer

Pros: Price
Great components (CPU, hardrive, RAM, etc)
Nice look

Cons: The keyboard is very uncomfortable
The touchpad and its keys are not comfortable
The biggest problem: it makes a static noise that comes from the speakers. This noise is very annoying and it sounds as if there was a short circuit inside the computer. This is a known issue with this computer and it should be fixed.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop for the price

Pros: Laptop has all the features as advertised. As expected, Win7 64bit, an i5 CPU, and 4GB of memory is nice and snappy. The on board graphics are great for any everyday tasks, even watching TV online. It also played Civilization 5 OK. Not as well as my custom built gaming machine, but that is to be expected. It was still smooth enough to be enjoyable, which is more than I expected from a laptop with only integrated graphics.

The numpad is rearranged a bit, and the mouse buttons are replaced with a long, narrow bar. Some reviewers slammed this laptop for it, but I have to say that they must be rather hard to please if these two things were any issue at all. The scroll pad is perfectly smooth, the bar works just fine, and is very easily "adjusted to" (took no adjustment by my wife or myself), and the numpad arrangement makes excellent use of the available real estate, allowing the rest of the keys to be that little bit larger. The keyboard is nice and snappy as well.

Great b

Cons: none.

Other Thoughts: very minimal amount of preinstalled annoyances, which were easily uninstalled in about 5 minutes, never to be seen or heard from again.

1 out of 5 eggsIt still has the same problem after replacement

Pros: price.

Cons: If there can rate a ZERO Egg for this product then I will do it, the product wouldn't worth more then one Egg. Only one and it is the worse one problems--->There is a high pitched noise that comes from both speakers and is also in your headphones when plugged in. You cannot hear the noise is coming from the laptop speaker if there's any ambient noise(like playing music or video); It is really ANNOYING when you sit in silence; Another SQUEALING sound WOULD come out when you using Firefxx, Gxxgle Chxrmx; MP3 software, Win Media Player...(lot of software) it made a lot faint for me. How to solve the SQUEALING sound problem? ----> paste two scotch taps on the speakers; use headphone FOREVER and DONT run the software that I mention above, then the noise would reduce, but would you like to do this on your new laptop? I called Gateway support and they said they can't identify the problem. :(~~~~~~~

Other Thoughts: DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT except there have refund, change another type of brand, or even store credit. I got a replacement from NewEgg already the new one comes and still HAS the same problem. I will request for another RMA again to see if there new one still have the same problem. This is my first product I bought from Gateway, but it is really disappoint me. I would not suggest friends to buy this product.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat value, powerful and good looking laptop

Pros: - 4GB Core i5 laptop = fast, $600 = great value.
- Nice looking design.

Cons: - Questionable trackpad buttons. No biggy, really.
- Mic catches echo - Skype becomes room-sensitive.
- Top cover is fingerprint magnet.

Other Thoughts: Replaced HDD with 60GB SSD and got a extremely fast laptop for $740. Failed to restore system image onto the new SSD for no apparent reason, so had to install Windows from scratch onto the new SSD.

In general I am very skeptical of laptops. I am a software developer and I always need all the speed I can get from a computer. Power+value balance was always so much in favor of desktops, that I never used laptops for anything more than internet, email and skype. This laptop, especially with SSD instead of stock HDD, delivers speed that makes it a good development workhorse.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for the price

Pros: Core i5, 4gb's DDR3, 320Gb hard drive, LED screen laptop under $600. Fast, little to NO heat for these i5's. Battery life. 2 cores, 4 threads on a laptop.

Cons: Touchpad is kind of annoying, but you get used to it. It's a Gateway/Acer...means the build quality is subpar compared to HP's and higher end manufacturers.

Other Thoughts: I'm an IT guy and I'm a firm believer that majority of the time the computer is only as good as the user using it. You have to understand that the hardware is almost all the same because it's not like Acer makes the processor, RAM, and hard drive. You're just paying for build quality and features. If you take care of your hardware it's all the same. Speakers....plug in headphones or a better set of external speakers, touchpad....plug in an external mouse. If you think the cons outweigh the price, then pay more and move on. If you need to pay $200+ more for the same specs with a better mouse and speakers, then go'll probably just upgrade in another 2 years anyway.

2 out of 5 eggsnot good

Pros: Fast, i5, 4gb ddr3 ram. HD output with HDMI in $600. I saw a lot of i3 notebooks around $550, why not just buy an i5 in $600. I think it is worth.

nice outlook design; included webcam; bluetooth.

Cons: 1st -----> bad speakers i think. some noise sound like "sasa" come out from speakers but u have put your ears close to speaker or u will hear when in silent room.
2nd ------> squealing when running some applications like fxxfox, it is very annoying, except u you paste two scotch tapes cover the speakers to reduce the noise.
3rd ----> Too heat for a new notebook, it warms my legs.
4th ----> battery, can't stay for more than 3 hrs even u turns it on powersave mode.

Other Thoughts: Most ppl say the touch pad click button is bad, but i am ok because i am using wireless mouse.

the squealing from speaker is the most bad thing for the notebook, and it seems can not be fix. I did request a REPLACEMENT from Newegg and try to see if i can get the good one.
