1 out of 5 eggsPiece of Junk

Pros: None

Cons: The laptop went back three times under warranty. Same failure mode every time. The Window 8 would download an update and then the keyboard would lockup. Then it wouldn't boot, and would not be able to get into BIOS. I would get a Gateway logo and a blinking, spinning circle.

Other Thoughts: Wish I bought a Toshiba.

4 out of 5 eggsGood laptop; shoddy AMD drivers

Pros: The quality of the laptop is superb. The overall build and quality of the laptop itself is wonderful, akin to a 600 dollar laptop (bought this for 270 dollars on Black Novermber).

-APU: The AMD A4-5000 is a trooper. It handles multitasking perfectly, for browsing and everyday computing, it can't be beat for the price. At the 300 dollar price point, you can't get an i3 (which is what this competes against) unless its on special.

-iGPU: 8330g on this li'l tugger handles all modern games on the absolute lowest setting at a steady 25-27 fps (which is considereed playable) very impressive for a laptop this price. Keep in mind that a 720p resolution was used to achieve the +20 fps, anything lower is considered unplayable. (go down to 600p for better performance at the cost of quality).

-RAM: 4gb 1600 ram gives the igpu the juice it needs. Not much to say.

Cons: AMD Overdrive does not recognize this APU, nor does the AMD Catalyst drivers for use with overclocking... It is to be expected since this is a mid-range mobile APU, one shouldn't tamper with such low tdp (25w). I honestly think however that overclocking both the gpu a healthy 50-70 Mhz would do no harm to the laptop overall, even over long periods of time.

Once again; AMD fails at driver recognition... maybe this time it was inteded as a "better safe than sorry" motive.

Other Thoughts: I recommend the A4-5000 to anyone that has a gaming pc at home with all the bells and whistles, and just wants something that will handle all the school/homework on the go AND will also handle World of Warcraft, Minecraft, hell even skyrim (yes, skyrim) at low low LOW yet playable settings.

Don't go in expecting a lot from the APU in this laptop, and you'll be surprised, I promise.

2 out of 5 eggsI got a lemon...

Pros: I bought this for a very good price during a previous sale - nearly 40% off. For this price point, the specs were great, and exactly what I needed - not a bit more.

Cons: The laptop I received failed to even boot - I have been shown the "no boot device found" message every try, including after changing BIOS settings. I intend to RMA this, and will update this review once I (hopefully) get a working product. Not a good start for my first order from Newegg

Other Thoughts: The reason this is not a one-egg review is that I really do like the laptop, its form-factor, and its specs. I am also fairly confident that Newegg will send me a working replacement.

1 out of 5 eggsBeware of what ships

Pros: Decent machine if you get the US keyboard

Cons: I have purchased a lot of things from Newegg but my purchase of these gateways have not gone well 4 out the 5 boxes were ok, However one shipped with a European keyboard that isnt qwerty and seems to be setup from French speaking Europe. I have waited 3 weeks for a RMA and havent gotten one.

Other Thoughts: Where is customer service follow through on RMAs

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent multitasking laptotp.

Pros: This is an excellent laptop for the price. Loads fast, is super cool (Never warm to the touch on the bottom), and the screen is excellent size to have it lay on your bed and watch a movie.

The screen resolution is easy on your eyes and the laptop feels like an 800-1000 dollar laptop like another reviewer said.

The laptop comes with a quad core that seems to be able to handle most things I throw at it; while still staying cool and EXTREMELY quiet. I never hear fans or anything turn on.

It's not a gaming laptop however I was able to run Simcity on low settings without a problem.

The sound is really great also.

Overall I would just say this is a perfect laptop for anyone looking to get someone a present or gift this year.

I compared many laptops within 100-150 of this price (350-400) and even though I can't review them all I think this was a great choice.

Cons: I know a lot of people are going to not like this laptop due to the missing drive. You have to seperate order a drive for this laptop.

However I'm not going to count that as a con. Spending an additional 50-100 would make this laptop out perform the rest of the laptops within 100 of it's price (Laptops up to 400).

I think one of the con's could possibly be that the laptop didn't come with any factory restore or cd's to boot from if you need to due to malware, etc.

I would recommend creating a restore point right as you get on for the first time.

I personally don't like Norton, the laptop came with internet security and I feel it's a processor hog. Although it wasn't a problem I removed it and got avira.

Other than getting used to the new OS (Windows) I would say this is a perfect laptop for the price.

There really are no con's.

Other Thoughts: If you are looking for a laptop on a budget to watch movies and play basic games this is your laptop.

No point in spending 350 to 400 for a laptop when this is a steal.

3 out of 5 eggsAgain No optical Drive

Pros: light weight laptop quad core small battery

Cons: According to Gateway as "Your data and memories are secure thanks to the M-Disc Ready™ drive on every 15.6” NE Series. The M-Disc Ready™ drive etches files onto a rock-like data layer in your M-Disc™ media. That creates a permanent physical record immune to the erosion of the organic dye layer used in regular DVDs, which can lead to failure within five years. M-Discs hold 4.7GB and can be burned with many popular programs" this is a NE series and the drive is missing.

Other Thoughts: So I will be calling Gateway to find out why this laptop is missing its drive.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent laptop for the price.

Pros: - Low cost
- Moderate performance
- 15.6" display (considered large for a laptop)
- Lightweight
- Quad-core processor (AMD A4 series)
- Easily accessible battery

Cons: - Lower processor speed (1.5 GHz)
- Keyboard feels cheap, caves in middle with medium pressure applied
- Power source input (the place on the laptop that you put the power cable in to charge the battery) does not accept the cable easily, there's a "block" of sorts, you need to really push it in. Big difference from the magnetic inputs I've come accustomed to on MacBooks.

Other Thoughts: I bought this laptop for web development to replace my dying MacBook. I immediately removed Windows 8 to install Ubuntu. If you are planning on installing a different operating system other than Windows 8 (whether full replace or dual boot), be aware that the mobo loads in UEFI mode, and you'll need to change that to Legacy in order to enable boot control so you can boot from a USB.

Overall, I'm happy with the purchase because it was so inexpensive (I got it during the November sale on Newegg). That being said, it is definitely not a laptop I would recommend to anyone who would be using it for anything other than surfing the web and other standard computing activities (processing text documents, etc).

4 out of 5 eggsImpresive Specs for Price

Pros: Fairly thin, huge bang for the buck, looks sleek. Popular with customers.

Cons: Phantom optical drive. Not a big deal these days but still a feature you'd expect on a 15.6" sized laptop.

4 out of 5 eggsA good, cheap laptop.

Pros: The price and the performance you get with it is the biggest pro here; With a quite roomy hard drive, full sized keyboard, good battery (~4hrs) and a AMD APU, this can even do basic gaming without much difficulty. The laptop is barebones but for the price it's not a bad deal at all; a excellent student laptop.

Cons: However, there are some minor issues here. For one thing, by default, the Fn keys run in what they call "Toggle" mode where you have to press and release Fn, then press the key you want. You can change this in the BIOS, thankfully.

There's a dedicated key on the keyboard that they call the "social" key, which is a proprietary application from Gateway (which is really Acer), that opens up a Windows 8 app that allows you to post to Facebook, Twitter, and some other social networks. However once you uninstall the program, the key is completely useless!

Also there's a wasted opportunity for the Optical drive bay; they could have something similar to what Lenovo/IBM does with their older Thinkpads, with the drive bay that lets you add a DVD drive or a second hard drive.

Other Thoughts: -1 egg for the minor flaws that really show on the laptop. However if you look past all of them you have a bargain laptop that really shines because of the price.
