3 out of 5 eggsBad on arrival

Pros: Loved the laptop, great 2nd computer and good for the kids.

Cons: Laptop kept shutting itself off every 20-30 minutes. Checked common issues like overheating and it wasn't the problem so no idea what the defect was. Requested an RMA, awaiting new one.

4 out of 5 eggsNot too bad for entry level

Pros: Considering the price ($349.99 when i purchased) I got a decent number of options and it's been fairly trouble free so far. I did install win 7 ultimate after a few weeks of trying to like win 8. The drivers for win 7 are on Gateway’s website even though it took me a little while to figure out what drivers applied to my system and not for other machines in this class of laptop. They didn't do a good job of separating drivers that would apply to machines with different CPUs, LAN s, WIFI, and so on. I am overall happy with this for my needs.

Cons: The Ram that came with the machine was from Kingston and had an unidentifiable set of numbers on it. I contacted both Gateway and Kingston to try and figure out what model it was before adding a second 4 gig stick of RAM.
Gateway's website was not only slow but very difficult to register with. I used 2 different browsers on 2 different computers because there webpage continued to lock up. Perhaps they were performing server maintenance at the time hmmm..... Also when they replied to my email about my specific laptop after giving them the SN they informed me that my machine was shipped with 8 gigs of ram instead of the 4 gigs it actually came with. I ignored the email and have since not been back to their webpage.

Other Thoughts: I did replace the hdd that came with it using a 500 gig Samsung 840 SSD, not the pro model, which greatly improved performance and was easy to upgrade being that the machine has convenient access to both the hard drive bay and ram area.
I also added 4 gigs of Kingston RAM (M51264K110S) which I had recommended to me from the Kingston website. It worked fine with the existing Kingston ram (ACR512X64D3S16C11G) which I couldn't identify on Kingston’s website or a Google search. As I suspected however, I haven't noticed any performance differences from the original 4 gigs of ram which wasn't acting as a bottleneck for what I use the machine for.

As i suspected however, I haven't noticed a performance difference as the original 4 gigs of ram wasn't acting as a bottleneck in anyway for what I use the machine for. Both sticks of ram are working in duel channel mode :)

3 out of 5 eggsBAD SPEC: No Bluetooth

Pros: So far, not a bad product for lower end laptop. May update after further use ...

Cons: Disappointed that it did not have Bluetooth support as advertised. By the time I got far enough into set up (as a gift already given), returning it was not a practical option.

Other Thoughts: Thanks to the Iron Egg, I'm getting $30 back because the price dropped that much in the week since I ordered it. That's the saving grace here. I'll spend some of that to get a Bluetooth USB Adapter and still maybe be $15 ahead, but down a USB port.
