1 out of 5 eggsSlow slow slow

Pros: Price, I got on sale.

Cons: Sooo slow!!! It takes at least 5 minutes just to boot up. I got this for simple web surfing and email and to use to update my iTunes podcasts on my iPod. I have tried to get rid of as much of the preloaded junk it came with but that didn't help much. That junk takes up most of the memory and CPU. It is also very difficult to navigate which is probably a function of the Windows 8 platform. Instead of my go to device for evenings in front of the TV I hardly use it at all. I wish I had not wasted my money.

Other Thoughts: I would not recommend this

5 out of 5 eggsNice Windows 8 Netbook

Pros: + Windows 8 in netbook format. It's small, light and portable.
+ Touchscreen is very responsive.
+ HDMI output works great and includes audio on the same cable. Just plug it into your TV and the netbook takes care of the rest. At least in my case it did not require any further effort in my part.
+ Plays HD videos in 1080p without problems.
+ When connected to a TV the F5 key works as toggle so you can turn off the netbook's display without affecting the TV display. Great for watching TV at night.
+ The netbook comes with a recovery tool that allows the user to create a recovery stick out of a USB flash drive.
+ Can be upgraded to 4GB RAM and the hard drive can be swapped out for a faster one.

Cons: - It's a tad slow sometimes but for basic tasks it's great.
- Some pre-installed bloatware.
- Slight problems after upgrading to Windows 8.1 (see Other Thoughts).
- The F6 button works as a toggle to disable touchscreen features. It can mislead the user into thinking there's something wrong with the machine. It's in the manual though...

Other Thoughts: * The netbook comes with Windows 8 32-bit installed. When I upgraded to Windows 8.1, the OS replaced the Intel Graphics Drivers with generic ones from Microsoft. The netbook became sluggish and slow as a result. At the time of this writing the Gateway support page does not offer drivers for the 32 bit version of Windows 8.1, but I found that installing the 32 bit driver from the Window 8 section solved the problem.
* In a similar fashion, the upgrade to 8.1 disabled the Bluetooth device in the netbook. Same as before I was able to install the Windows 8 driver, but in this case I had to do a manual install because Windows complained the driver was not validated for Windows 8.1. Overriding this check allowed me to fix the problem and get my Bluetooth working again.
* Users should note that Windows 8.x default power savings settings makes the netbook work slower when using battery power. This is conspicuously noticeable when HD playback stutters on battery and yet plays fine when plugged in. By changing Windows 8.x's advanced power settings I was able to configure the laptop's multimedia back again to full performance, but at the expense of battery power. It's not a big deal but it is good to know.
* The HDD had about %20 defragmentation right out of the box. By removing bloatware and running a defrag tool I was able to squeeze a little bit more performance.
* The recovery creator tool requires a 16GB USB stick or higher.

3 out of 5 eggsSmall . . .bt capable

Pros: It is small, lightweight, portable, and runs most main stream applications
The CPU, while weak, is a 64-Bit capable unit and the memory can go to 4GB in the -only- one available slot

Cons: It's motor is on the light side, but adequate for web surfing and e-mail . . . what most people use a laptop for?

Other Thoughts: Others have commented about limitations for drivers . . .
but . . .
The Gateway site has all of the drivers for Windows 8/8.1 in 64-Bit as they have in 32-Bit
Just remember that one cannot just -upgrade- to 64-Bit as it has to be a -clean- install

3 out of 5 eggsBeware: it's 32-bit Windows 8

Pros: Inexpensive. Touch screen. Very portable.

Cons: Beware: it's 32-bit Windows 8. If/when updated to 8.1, there is no full featured video graphics driver available for it, only a "basic" driver, which doesn't support an external monitor, some "multi media" capability, etc. Other things are also design deficient in 32-bit Windows 8.1.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat

Pros: Bought this for my son for Xmas and so far so good it meets all of his requirements for school and classes. He needed something for and EMS class he is taking and I thought the touch screen was something he would like and he does.

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: Seems to be a very affordable little laptop or netbook. Coming with the Microsoft student I thought was a great deal. It is plug and play he was on our wireless internet in minutes and it recognized our printer no problem.
