Good unit and price.
- Pros: I have had and used this DVD for about six months. Good unit and an excellent price. Lite-on it does provide support on their website. I admit it is not the most user friendly site I have ever seen but you can get a driver update, although to be honest it is a really "firmware" update, not a driver, and as such care needs to be taken as with all firmware updates. Go to this site; http://us.liteonit.com/us/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=153 select optical storage and enter your model number. You will get the update.
- Cons: None at this time.
- Other Thoughts: Newegg, or "Lite-on it" should point out in the sales information that this unit, as with many of todays, does not require a driver. Like many hard drives it uses firmware instead and should be plug and play if compilable with the equipment it is installed in.
Only Compaq i have ever liked
- Pros: Very nice for a cheap laptop. i have bought two so far. hard drive is a 7200 rpm and, surprise, its a western digital. huge difference in speed between 7200 and 5400 laptop drives. the radeon 4200 graphics are great for Aero, HD video, and casual gaming (its not gonna run crysis, but plays C&C 3 quite well). best running sub-700 dollar laptop i have ever used (usually, budget laptops are not so hot). Nice screen, keyboard action is good, speedy burner (some complain its noisy, but hey, arent they all). good battery life for a 6-cell battery (if you need more, buy a 12-cell with the money you saved). Impressed that in came with Wireless N, many cheap laptops still do not. Its upgradeable, so if it gets too sluggish for you, get 8 Gbs of ram, an SSD drive, and a Turion II ultra, and presto, new computer.
- Cons: Bloatware....Hp/Compaq crud all over it (quick reformat with a Home Premium x64 disc took care of that). 3 gigabytes of ram is kinda lame (but 40 dollars will get you another 2 gb to put in it, much snappier). touchpad mouse needs a bit of tweaking for proper feel.
- Other Thoughts: I have never been a Compaq fan (or a fan of any computer OEM for that matter). if you want more updated drivers than what the hp/compaq support site offers, you will have to play hunt the driver (not really a con though, its the same for any OEM). If you want a good, solid laptop on the cheap, this is the one.
Great Budget Notebook
- Pros: Nice piano black finish. Keyboard feels solid and spacious with a 10-key pad. Large viewing screen. Good track pad with a easy to keep clean surface. Video out via VGA is very good. Fairly quiet during use. Good webcam. 3 USB ports.
- Cons: DVD burner is very loud. Battery life is on average 2 hours using WiFi. No HDMI output. Love or hate "Q" logo on the front panel. The preinstalled HP software pops up a lot. My delete key squeaks when I type.
- Other Thoughts: I actually own the CQ61-313US, but I figure for review purposes the two notebooks are almost the same. Mine has the Athlon M300 processor while the 420US has the Athlon M320. For a budget computer it has everything I'm looking for. I've owned my notebook for 5 months and the processor is fast, the hard drive size is adequate, 3 GBs of RAM (2.75 GB usable) and it comes with Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium. Speakers sound good, but if there are other noises in the room the speakers will get drowned out. For under $500 it's hard to beat, but if you're a heavy mobile user you might want to stay away. The battery won't last very long and it's quite large to carry around. This is ideal as an office notebook that sits on your desk.
