3 out of 5 eggsWorked great right up until it died

Pros: Great value for the money. Decently responsive for most tasks. LCD panel is what you find on these sizes of laptops in this price range. Video from integrated chipset is great. Wife loves it.

Cons: NO HDMI out or SD CARD READER, no webcam. Also, died after about 1.5 years of ownership. Other models have this.

Other Thoughts: Just up and died last week. Single blink on the caps lock. HP website said was CPU. Got a new one, still dead. Decided it must be motherboard. Got a new one of those. Working again. Found that there were many versions of this board. Apparently the 14 & 15.6 and inch Laptop motherboards are the same. These are represented as model #'s CQ42, CQ62. There are G42 and G62 versions as well.

I found another motherboard with the missing HDMI and Card reader for almost the same price as an exact replacement motherboard. Fits into existing case no problem, just had to drill out and file holes in side. You can find cases bottoms with the requisite ports if you search around if you don't want to drill/file.

Laptop would probably be a lot better/responsive with a SSD now that they have dropped in price.

Since I feel the laptop died prematurely, I am rating it 3 stars, however, I frequently caught the wife letting it sit on a blanket or pillow, which DOES NOT HELP VENTING, since the intake is on the bottom!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop

Pros: LED screen, battery life, Gaming, this laptop can do it all.
Drop proof first thing i did when i got this was drop it from chest level onto hard wood floor. The laptop landed right on the corner too. not even a scuff and booted up fine

Cons: Does get hot but never shuts down. I still bought a cooler for it. Blotware. I removed ALOT of stuff.

Other Thoughts: what i have done to mine.
Upgraded to 8GB
upgraded the CPU to AMD Phenom II Dual-Core Mobile Processor N620 2.80GHz ( the old cpu was fine i just like to upgrade) windows exprience jumped 1.1

5 out of 5 eggsEverything plus a little more...

Pros: This laptop is perfect for the individual who enjoys browsing the web, checking email, etc. I bought it for my spouse who generally does just those things and at times video streaming. So far so good.

It's pretty fast with a great display. A little big for me though, I like my laptops small and compact.

Cons: Touchpad. Seems somewhat stiff. Not enough to knock it down to four stars though.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop

Pros: -Dual core, 3 gigs of ram, DVD, and 64 bit Windows 7
-Tough (see other thoughts)
-Nice looking

Cons: -All of the bloatware they put on the thing... ugh
-Gets pretty hot (and super hot if you're using it while it's charging from a low/dead battery). I use a cheap cooler base, so this really isn't an issue for me, though.

Other Thoughts: I won't lie, I beat the heck out my laptop. I've owned it well over a year and take it back and forth from work to home every day. I don't have a "protective" case for it; I just toss it in the back seat and I'm on my way. I've plugged and unplugged the power cord and headphone jack well over 1000 times and neither ports have worn out. My little brother has spilled coke on it, my cat and dog have both jumped up on top of it multiple times, and it's fallen off of my bed and hit the floor once. But amazingly this little dude has pulled through it all with no issues and still is going (I'm typing this review right now with it).
I give props to Compaq for making a pretty tough laptop.

5 out of 5 eggsso far

Pros: Looks great, nice display, fast (for the money) and quiet-

Cons: gets hot, battery goes fast-

Other Thoughts: Have had it only a short time- but no problems yet.
I almost didn't get this because of all the negative reviews regarding the mouse pad-- There's nothing wrong with the mouse pad-- It's great, doesn't take any kind of getting used to.
Final thought- don't expect any miracles-- but it is a good machine for the money.

4 out of 5 eggsorder the disks

Pros: 1. Good screen size and video quality
2. Great price
3. upgradeable to 8 GB DDR3 1333
4. Great candidate for a SSD swap.
5. Stripped down model saves money.

Cons: 1. I find that having no border on the touchpad is undesirable. I am generally against stickers, but the idea of putting stickers on either side of the touchpad appeals to me.
2. If you really need a webcam, SD card reader, and HDMI port then this laptop is not for you.

Other Thoughts: Put a SSD in it.
I did it, this is all you need to know:
As of the end of January 2012, recovery disks are available for sale from HP. Look under the battery to get the serial #. Google "HP driver download" to get to the HP support site. In the driver download area there is an option to "order recovery media". Order it.
The disks HP sent me reloaded Windows without me having to enter a serial key. The original OEM factory HP tools partition along with the 13.5 GB recovery partition was also added so that I can now do a Windows recovery without the disks or run the hardware troubleshooter if I so desire.
All you have to do is install a brand new SSD, don't format it or anything, install it right out of the box and into the laptop then run the HP disks.
This laptop + 8 GB RAM + SSD is the best money you will spend on a laptop in the history of ever.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent Laptop

Pros: Have had this laptop for just over a year now and it has served me well.
Love the texture of the overall case
Decent graphics for how cheap it is (big SC2 fan) but sadly I can only play it on the lowest setting. But what can I say you get what you paid for

Cons: Gets extremely hot I have to have the end part lifted on a little metal case I have so it can get more airflow to stay a little cooler.
Mouse pad isn't the greatest, I wish there was a way to tell where it starts and ends

5 out of 5 eggsGood School Laptop

Pros: 3GB Ram is great for school needs
Graphics Card is a plus
Processor speed for internet use is great

Cons: Mousepad sucks, bought a 10 dollar mouse and fixed the issue
Some bloatware, also easily remedied

Other Thoughts: This laptop was bought for my wife who has no knowledge of computers in any capacity. She primarily uses it for school work and internet classes, and has not had a single problem with it. After you clean the bloatware and install an actual security suite, you're pretty much good to go. I would buy again if I needed another general purpose laptop.

4 out of 5 eggsNot perfect, but not bad.

Pros: Nice performance/features for the money. Good enough condition for a refurb.

Cons: Touch pad isn't great. Bloatware & no Windows disc. Headphone jack has poor contact & requires wiggling of the male connector, then NOT touching it once dialed in, for acceptable headphone use.

Other Thoughts: You can make backup discs, but an included Win7 disc would have been nice. But I knew that going into the purchase. I'm still deducting one egg just because I don't like that & for the audio jack defect. But overall, I'm happy with the purchase. I don't plan to use headphones with it much.
